高效作业 32 [选择性必修第四册 Unit 1 Science Fiction]
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Sometimes it takes a work of art to give the inspiration for advances in science. For example,a successful businessman’s dream of humans living on other planets was first inspired by Isaac Asimov’s Foundation book series. Let’s explore some of the technologies from science fiction that have been brought to life.
※Remote control
Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune features a small flying robot device that is piloted remotely, one of the earliest appearances of drones(无人机) in science fiction. With the first permit for commercial drone use in the US given in 2006,drones became a reality, and can now be found taking on multiple roles. They provide new angles for photography, help farmers maintain their crops and are used in the military. Jeff Bezos has even supported the use of drones to deliver packages for his company Amazon, unveiling(公开) a delivery drone back in 2019.
※From thin air
Television show Star Trek, first appearing on screens in 1966,inspired science. One of the most unexpected examples may be the 3D printer. In 2019,researchers at the University of California,Berkeley,US,developed a 3D printer that shapes objects using rays of light.
They have named the printer the “replicator”,the same name as the device in the programme to show their inspiration. The device uses light to alter the density of resin(树脂),changing the material from a liquid to a solid in order to shape the desired object.
※Starting the heart
One of the first sci-fi novels Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has had a huge impact on science. Earl Bakken, the inventor of the pacemaker(起搏器),a device placed into the chest that helps the heart to pump blood using small electrical impulses(脉冲),was inspired by the 1931 movie adaptation of the book. “What intrigued me the most ... was the creative spark of Dr Frankenstein’s electricity,” Bakken told The Atlantic.
( )1.Why does Jeff Bezos want to use drones
A.To transport packages.
B.To guard military sites.
C.To seed and water crops.
D.To snap breathtaking pictures.
( )2.What do we know about the 3D printer
A.It came into use in 1966.
B.It is used to print anything.
C.It can change the density of a desired object.
D.It has been named after a device in Star Trek.
( )3.What is the common feature of the technologies mentioned in the article
A.They are all based on electricity.
B.They are all invented by famous CEOs.
C.They are all brought to life from science fiction.
D.They are all used for commercial and medical purposes.
B
Hibernation(冬眠) is a classic topic of science fiction. In movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey,Alien,or Passengers, crew members are put into a state of sleep to take year-long journeys to space. Now a new study from Washington University has shown that human hibernation may soon become a reality.
The research team carried out tests on rats—animals that do not naturally hibernate. They first identified a group of neurons(神经元) in a deep brain region, which were found to be involved in controlling body temperature during hibernation. They showed that,in mice, these neurons could be stimulated using ultrasound(超声波),which was delivered through a helmet without causing an injury.
When receiving the ultrasound, the mice showed a drop in body temperature of about 3°C,and their heart rates fell by about 47%. When the ultrasound system was switched off, they woke up again. The result was “surprising and fascinating”,said Hong Chen,a professor who led the work.
Researchers are also trying to determine how to harness the power of hibernation to help humans. They believe that it could be the key to addressing health conditions like heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, hibernation’s ability to slow aging, which was observed in bats, could benefit space exploration, enabling longer missions with less food requirements. Research in animals also suggests that bodies of hibernating astronauts might lose less bones and muscle, making them fit and ready to start challenging exploration soon after they wake up.
By unlocking the secrets of this remarkable process, researchers may uncover ways to improve human health,as well as gain new insights into the natural world. Therefore, the exploration of hibernation is an exciting area that is sure to yield numerous benefits in the years to come.
The scientists now plan to look at how lowered body temperature might affect the cognitive abilities of humans. “Our next experiments will test working memory in monkeys. This is important because while astronauts physically hibernate as they fly into deep space, their brain still needs to be working,” said Chen.
( )4.How did researchers put rats into hibernation
A.By lowering their body temperature.
B.By activating specific brain neurons.
C.By putting a regular helmet on them.
D.By using ultrasound through an operation.
( )5.What does the underlined word “harness” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Employ. B.Challenge.
C.Overlook. D.Discover.
( )6.What advantage might hibernation bring to humans
A.It improves people’s mental health.
B.It predicts a variety of heart disease.
C.It helps astronauts keep physically fit.
D.It enables astronauts to build up muscle.
( )7.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To point out the significance of the study.
B.To bring out the focus of follow-up studies.
C.To discuss other factors affecting hibernation.
D.To explain practical applications of the finding.

There’s a word to 2 the kind of future world which often appears in science fiction: dystopia (反乌托邦). It means a(n) 3 place where things are unpleasant or bad. The 4 is utopia. But does tomorrow’s world have to be so disappointing
No. A new project wants to use the power of science fiction to 5 a better future. The 6 of Project Hieroglyph is to bring together writers, scientists, engineers and artists to create optimistic stories about a 7 society in the next 50 years.
It’s just a matter of making an effort. It’s 8 to create a dystopia than write a feel-good story. There’s more conflict in a world full of problems, and stories are interesting when there are a lot of problems to solve. No 9 ,no story! But the project produced a book with some 10 plots. One of them is about environmentalists who fight to 11 people from building the first hotel in the polar areas.
But will these stories actually change anything or merely keep us entertained Ed Finn, the book’s editor, thinks the former. He says,“A good science-fiction story can be 12 . It can inspire hundreds, thousands, millions of people to 13 something that they want to do.” The influence of science fiction has already been well 14 in modern research.
Time will tell how far we can go. Let’s dream big and think 15 the box.

In the field of marine conservation ,there exists a true hero of the seas whose story of preserving our oceans is nothing short of inspirational. Dr Lisa Anderson,a marine biologist, has devoted her life to protecting our underwater ecosystems and the countless species that call them home.
Growing up near the coast,Dr Anderson’s childhood was filled with visits to the beach and she established a profound connection to the sea. She always had a passion for marine life and a deep curiosity about the creatures beneath the waves. She said,“As a kid,I used to dream about the ocean. It was this wild place full of colour and life and home to these fantastic creatures. I pictured big sharks ruling the food chain and saw graceful sea turtles dancing across coral reefs. But the first time I truly went underwater,I was about 10 years old. And I can still vividly remember I was instantly surrounded by fish in all colours of the rainbow. That was the day I fell in love with the ocean.” It’s no surprise that she pursued a career in marine biology.
Dr Anderson’s extraordinary work has spanned decades, from conducting vital research on endangered coral reefs to leading educational initiatives about marine conservation. Her tireless efforts have led to the creation of marine protected areas that ensure the safety of critical habitats for countless species. “In my 40 years on this planet,I’ve had the great honour to explore some of its most incredible seascapes for the Save Our Seas Foundation,” she said.
One of Dr Anderson’s most notable accomplishments is her work in raising awareness about the destructive effects of plastic pollution in our oceans. Her research on plastic waste and its impact on marine life has stimulated global initiatives to reduce plastic consumption and increase recycling.

Mountain lions are not commonly thought of as animals that swim well. But at least for one adventurous cat, that couldn’t be further from the truth. A new study recorded a young male mountain lion paddling(划水) two-thirds of a mile from the mainland of Washington State to an uninhabited island in Puget Sound. The GPS-collared mountain lion, known as Nolan, took a winding path through the suburbs of Olympia, and along the coast, before taking to the sea.
The researchers also combed through historical records and found evidence of mountain lions inhabiting additional four islands outside of the range of this youngster’s swim, all of over a mile from the shore or the nearest island. This suggests the animals can swim even farther at times, perhaps close to a mile and a quarter. Young male mountain lions often undertake difficult and long journeys in search of new territory,as was the case for Nolan.
“We’re redefining the mountain lion in our minds as an animal that can swim and is willing to swim,” says the study co-author Mark Elbroch. “Water shouldn’t be seen as a barrier to movement to any large animal.” In Brazil’s Pantanal, mountain lions regularly swim in the vast wetland during the wet season. In 2010,Elbroch and his colleagues documented a tagged cat repeatedly swimming across a large lake in Chilean Patagonia to eat domestic sheep on an island, swimming 0.6 miles at a time.
“Since the number of mountain lions is much lower than before and the animals avoid people, behaviours like swimming remain underappreciated,” experts say.
Audra Huffmeyer from National Geographic Explorer agrees. While she wasn’t surprised that mountain lions can island-hop in the Salish Sea,she said,“The distances covered are incredible... the capacity of large mountain lions to get to extreme habitats is pretty amazing.”
“Nolan’s journey and all the data collected will help land managers understand where mountain lions travel, and help identify corridors(走廊) that need to be protected,” says Jim Williams,a biologist. And the Olympic Peninsula certainly needs such guidance and protection,as its mountain lions have the lowest genetic diversity of any in the area, records show.
( )5.Why did Nolan swim long distances
A.To seek its partners.
B.To reach a new habitat.
C.To hide from humans.
D.To adapt to the wet climate.

A Letter from Willa Cather
to President Tomá Garrigue Masaryk
Honoured Sir,
Your letter, sent to me through your Legation at Washington, confers upon me a great honour and gives me great pleasure.
I am glad to have carried a message from the Bohemian(波希米亚) neighbours, whom I grew up with,to their home country of the Czech Republic. I have just returned to New York, where I had the pleasure of taking Annie Pavelka, the living “Antonia” in my book My Antonia, and six of her children to the first screening of A Lost Lady. I have the good fortune to preserve relations with most of my characters. “Antonia” and her splendid children are flesh and blood realities. Every time I go back to them,I feel how much more interesting and lovable they are than my picture of them. I wish I could present them to you in person.
I regret that I cannot satisfactorily meet your kind request for biographical(传记的) material. I avoid biographers, asking them to wait until I get my work further along. My first novel was published in 1912,and a period of twelve years is hardly long enough for a writer to find the form best suited for writing. I was not young when I began to write, and though living is a good preparation for writing,I do need more time to acquire a simple and modest way of presenting my work, however well I know what I wish to present.
I am able to send you a very good photograph taken recently. I enclose a short biographical account which my publishers use for publicity purposes, and some casual reviews. Biographies usually begin to come along just about the time a writer has no more to say,and I do not feel that time has yet come to me.
I beg you,President Masaryk,to believe in my grateful appreciation of your letter.
Respectfully yours,
Willa Cather

Claire has worked at a major London-based consulting firm for six years. She enjoys her job and earns a comfortable salary, but recently, she’s started to feel anxious about the future of her career. The reason: artificial intelligence(AI).
In recent years,as headlines about robots stealing human jobs have ballooned, some workers report starting to feel anxious about their futures in the labour market. Generative OpenAI’s ChatGPT broke out seemingly overnight, creating continuing uncertainty for workers.
Carolyn Montrose,a career coach and lecturer at Columbia University, acknowledges the pace of technological innovation can be scary. “It is normal to feel anxious about the impact of AI,but workers don’t necessarily have to feel dreadful. Instead of shying away from AI,employees must lean into the technology to progress alongside these advancements by learning and using it to their advantage.”
Historically, this isn’t the first time we have encountered industry disruptions—from automation and manufacturing to e-commerce—we have found ways to adapt. Indeed, the introduction of new technology has often been unnerving for some people, but Montrose explains that plenty good has come from past new developments: technological change has always been a key push for society’s advancement.
Although some anxiety is justified,it may not be time to hit the panic button yet. Some research has shown fears of robots taking over human jobs might be overblown. The truth was that not only are robots not replacing human workers at the rate most people believe, but they also misunderstand the rate at which automation tools are taking over. While some new technologies would likely be adopted without considering all implications, that a technology can be used for something does not mean it will be implemented.
“Humans will always have a role to play in business by performing the important work that robots cannot. This kind of work typically requires inborn human qualities, such as relationship building, creativity and emotional intelligence,” emphasises Stefanie Coleman,a senior business advisor. “Recognising the unique value of humans is an important step in navigating the fears surrounding this topic.”
( )5.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Claire
A.Recognition for the power of AI.
B.A well-paid post Claire can so easily land.
C.Workers’ concern about future employment.
D.The convenience AI has brought to employees.
( )6.What does Montrose suggest in Paragraph 3
A.Acknowledge and embrace the new.
B.Stay away from ChatGPT and the like.
C.Ignore AI’s existence for the time being.
D.Feel uncomfortable with new technology.
( )7.Why are humans irreplaceable according to Stefanie Coleman
A.Robots are too costly.
B.AI has been unreliable.
C.AI is not advanced enough.
D.Humans have unique qualities.
