In 1975,a San Diego homemaker named Marjorie Rice came across a column in Scientific American about tiling(瓷砖). There is a problem which has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice’s chance encounter with tiling, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes on the tile countertops. “I thought she was just drawing casually,” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice who took only one year of maths in high school, was actually discovering never-before-seen patterns.
Born in Florida, she loved learning and particularly her brief exposure to maths, but tight budget and social culture prevented her family from even considering that she might attend college. “For Rice, maths was a pleasure,” her son David once said.
Rice gave one of her sons a subscription to Scientific American partly because she could read it carefully while the children were at school. When she read Gardner’s column about tiling as she later recalled in an interview,“I thought it must be wonderful that someone could discover these beautiful patterns which no one had seen before.” She also wrote in an essay,“My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. Lacking a mathematical background,I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.”
Astonished and delighted, she sent her work to Gardner, who sent it to Doris,a tiling expert at Moravian College. Doris confirmed that Rice’s finding was correct.
Later,Rice declined to lecture on her discoveries, citing shyness, but at Doris’s invitation, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was introduced to the audience. Rice still said nothing of her achievements to her children, but they eventually found out as the awards mounted.

高效作业 18 [选择性必修第一册 Unit 2 Looking into the Future]
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
There’s a classic short story in which a young man travels years ahead and meets his future self. Narratives like this have always been related to science fiction. But what if you could meet your future self
I’m a psychologist and professor. My research over the past 15 years isn’t far from this theme. I’ve largely focused on how people think about and relate to their future selves, and explored the reasons why we have such a hard time making long-term decisions. In my research,I’ve learned that we often imagine our future selves as strangers, which can impede us in making long-term choices. One way to bridge the emotional gap is to think of future selves in more concrete and vivid ways, like writing letters to and from one’s future self, which can strengthen the connection between current and future selves.
Admittedly, having people engage in an imagined conversation is a far cry from actually meeting one’s future self. But it’s believed that far richer interactions may happen in the near future through artificial intelligence (AI). It wouldn’t be predicting exactly what choices you’d make. It’d be more about showing your potential, based on the lives of people similar to you: not just one possible life for you,but rather, the most possible life path for you. Such interactions could offer valuable insights into our potential future selves.
So,to return to my original question: if you could time-travel to meet your future self, what aspects of your life would you want to know more about I realised, through thorough reflections, that the most powerful questions would be the ones that helped me make better choices today—questions exploring personal growth, regrets and unfulfilled actions.
Actually, you don’t need to wait for time travel or advanced AI for answers that you can act on. Through my research,I’ve learned that simply taking a bit of time to picture this meeting can help you make better choices now. All you need is a little imagination, and the willingness to put yourself in the shoes of a person you currently treat as a stranger.

An overall transformation is needed for the planet to accommodate people’s pursuit of well-being. A new study by an international team of researchers explores a Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy as a driver of a transformative process based on a learning society.
The Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy is a way of learning applicable to all societal sectors. According to it,people, societies and the world are an interlinked, systemic body. Such a world view can make life meaningful, increase people’s experiences of belonging and inclusion, expand the scope of care, and help people identify their opportunities to influence.
In a time marked by crises, learning to be one with the world is increasingly essential. In many ways, our everyday lives are linked with all other life on Earth. According to Professor Arto O. Salonen of the University of Eastern Finland, the study’s lead author, the most important reason behind the upgrading(升级) planetary crises is people’s being separated from their surrounding reality.
He says,“As we try for a comprehensive sustainability transition(转变),we need increasingly powerful and more systemic interpretations of reality.” The current strategy for a sustainable future emphasises economic and technological progress, but that is not enough. Learning is needed, too. A learning society relies on changes in its citizens’ values, beliefs and world view.
“How we become aware of our everyday connection to other people and nature at the level of our emotions, body and mind stands at the core of the sustainability transition,” says Erkka Laininen,a co-author of the study. Having an experience of belonging to and being part of the world strengthens people’s sense of meaningfulness and their agency(作用) needed in building a sustainable future.
The transformative power of a learning society can be a key factor in the green transformation going into all society,in which citizens’ consumer behaviour and ways of living, moving and producing food and energy are organised in new ways. Conceptions of work and the economy can be reformed, too.
A sustainable future is not about life becoming more miserable—it’s about life becoming richer and more meaningful as hope for the future grows stronger.
( )5.Why is Theory of Planetary Social Pedagogy mentioned
A.To stress learning to be one with the world.
B.To suggest reforming citizens’ ways of living.
C.To describe how the theory is being improved.
D.To tell if a sustainable future is significant.
( )6.What is the main reason for increasing global crises according to Professor Salonen
A.The planet is reaching its limits.
B.Humans break away from the reality.
C.Old ideas of well-being are being questioned.
D.Progress in economy and technology is unbalanced.
( )7.What can we conclude from the text
A.A sustainable future is based on a learning society.
B.Humans, societies and the world were connected more.
C.Ending the present strategy for future is needed.
D.Global crises have resulted in wrong world view.
( )8.How does the author support the theme of the text
A.By introducing a theory.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By using researchers’ arguments.
D.By providing study processes.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
In the late 19th century,Yellowstone became the first great National Park, described as America’s “best idea”. But the park was devastating for the Native Americans who had lived or hunted within their borders and who were displaced.
The United States has taken one small step to compensate by returning the National Bison Range to its native owners as a first step.
In 2016 biologist Edward responded to the biodiversity crisis by calling for half of Earth to be left to wilderness, birthing the “30×30” campaign to protect 30 percent of Earth’s land and sea surface by 2030. Backed by many scientists, and major conservation organisations, the target is likely to be adopted by Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD).
Critics argue that the “30×30” initiative, aimed at conservation, could become a tool for exploitation(剥削). They claim it may unjustly burden those least responsible for environmental issues like climate change and biodiversity loss. There’s concern that powerful entities could use the proposal as an excuse for seizing land from disadvantaged groups. Indigenous territories, which host 80% of Earth’s remaining biodiversity, are particularly at risk of being targeted in the name of protection. Tragically, the very communities that bravely protect nature against exploitation could face displacement, with an estimate suggesting up to 300 million people could lose their homes.
There is a way to do global conservation right. Indigenous communities are as good as or better than governments at protecting biodiversity and already conserve a quarter of Earth’s land surface. The CBD needs to ensure that they get secure rights to their territories,as well as the resources to defend them.
The superpowers could lead the way in this effort by helping rescue nature and its most passionate defenders from the original militarised(军事化) conservation model. That is a crucial step towards a relief for the incredible life forms that share our planet,as well as their indigenous guardians.

B.CBD’s ambition to empower the indigenous people.
C.The compensation made by the United States.
D.An excuse to seize land from dominant groups.
( )3.What is an ideal way to handle global conservation
A.Precautions against reducing indigenous people to poverty and misery.
B.Relying on the governments to displace locals from their homeland.
C.Militarised conservation models pioneered by the United Sates.
D.Returning the land in the care of the indigenous communities.

This Is What Your Dog’s Behaviours
Should Tell You
A straightened tail
When you see a dog’s tail in the air, that dog probably feels very excited or confident about something. If its tail is shaky and remains up,the dog probably just feels challenged in a way. Whenever a dog is content, its tail is always levelled with its body. However,if the tail is hanging low, this shows some kind of insecurity.
Chewing your furniture
When puppies start teething, they start chewing things around. It just means that they have not been getting as much physical activity as their bodies need. You can easily help by taking them out for a nice walk or helping them exercise in some other ways.
Tilting(倾斜) their heads
When you are talking to dogs, you subconsciously end up speaking in a higher pitch. The dogs tip their heads in an attempt to understand what you are telling. Dogs have a great way of reading different body language and responding to vocal cues. They recognise specific words especially those associated with treats they love or walks. A certain theory states that dogs will move their heads in that manner as a way of adjusting their ears so that they can listen better.
Raising their ears
When you see a dog raise its ears, just know it’s listening keenly to you. It happens when they are unfamiliar with a certain sound and are trying to figure the sound out. So when you see this, just allow your dog to figure out things slowly for a second. After all,it’s very nice to have a dog that is observant.
( )1.If a dog keeps its tail hanging low,it suggests it feels ________.
A.satisfied B.thrilled
C.unsafe D.challenged
( )2.What should you do if your dog is chewing your furniture
A.Tie the dog. B.Walk the dog.

Politicians, business bosses, and other types of leaders indeed tend to like speaking with their hands, but does the habit influence how others interpret those words To get to the bottom of it,a team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics conducted a series of experiments on volunteers who viewed videos of people speaking with and without hand movements.
After showing the volunteers videos of people speaking under different conditions, the researchers asked them questions about what they had heard. Some conditions involved the speaker stressing different parts of words in a sentence. Other conditions involved the speaker making various types of hand gestures, such as pointing and sweeping movements. The team recorded the volunteers as they viewed the video recordings, questioning the volunteers afterward about what they had seen and heard.
Researchers found that the volunteers were more affected by syllables(音节) spoken with the conjunction of hand gestures: In 20 percent of the cases, the viewers were more likely to have heard and interpreted the word spoken with a hand gesture. Interestingly, however, volunteers were 40 percent more likely to hear the wrong sound when a mismatch between the word spoken and the hand gesture occurred.
Body language expert Carol Goman said,“Studies have found that speaking with your hands really can change the view of your character. People who communicate through active gesturing tend to be considered warm, agreeable, and energetic, while those who remain still are seen as logical, cold, and analytic. In fact,a 2015 study that studied TED Talks, which posts international talks online, found that the most popular speakers used nearly twice as many gestures as the least popular speakers used.”
The research team said that their findings suggest that hand gestures are an important part of in-person communication and have a direct impact on what the listener hears. Furthermore, they suggest that our responses to hand gestures may be something we learn as we grow up.
( )4.What’s the researchers’ purpose in doing the experiments
A.To examine the volunteers’ interpreting skills.
B.To test the effect hand gestures have on listeners.
C.To record the volunteers’ questions for the speaker.
D.To confirm the influence hand movements have on leaders.

A.Hand movements affected what the listener heard.
B.The speaker stressed different parts of words in a sentence.
C.People speaking with different hand gestures had different effects.
D.The most popular speakers used fewer gestures than the least popular speakers did.
( )6.What does the underlined word “conjunction” mean in Paragraph 3
A.Assistance. B.Combination.
C.Disturbance. D.Interpretation.

A.Gestures can’t influence others’ view on one’s personality.
B.Understanding gestures is a must in every language.
C.In-person communication helps interpret gestures.
D.Responses to gestures are learned behaviours.

In late September,an international team of researchers spread out across a remote New Mexico mountain range in search of a plant. The group walked through the rough landscape looking for signs of plants hugging a tree. Seven days later, the scientists left with a sample of nature’s reward: wild bean plants.
The scientists wanted to collect the legume(豆科植物),which is native to dry regions of the southwestern US and northwestern Mexico. “The plants have adapted to this very hot and dry climate,so they have exceptional drought and heat tolerance,” said Sarah Dohle,an expert of the US Department of Agriculture.
A warming planet is causing huge damage to agriculture around the globe. In the western US,a severe drought affected California’s tomato and rice production. In Guatemala, the combined effects of both drought and rain decreased corn and black bean harvests. In Sub-Saharan Africa, hot conditions have reduced the yields of wheat and corn by more than a third since the early 1960s.
“Crops like the wild bean could help diversify food production, and their genetic material may help make other crops more drought- and heat-tolerant,” said Richard Pratt, who is among a growing number of scientists working to look for crops adapting to climate change.
The University of California is leading a multi-state $15 million project involving 20 institutions to speed up the breeding cycles of wheat and to research ways to help the crop grow in a toughened environment. At Auburn University in Alabama, scientists are working to breed a peanut variety that can better tolerate drought conditions. And scientists from various institutions have taken part in an effort funded by the Norwegian government to identify, collect and evaluate wild crops for future development.
Still, there are numerous challenges at play: Crop breeding is a time-intensive process,so it can be difficult for scientists to keep pace with rapidly changing weather. Advances in gene editing can help speed up the process, but come with their own trials.
“As global climate change keeps being hard on us,” Sarah Dohle said,“there isn’t plenty of time left for us to get crops that are adaptable.”
