Creating new words
We can put two words together to create a new word. It is called a compound word.

We can make compound nouns in a number of ways.
noun + noun → thunderstorm, teamwork, snowball
noun + verb → earthquake, waterfall, sunrise
verb + noun → passport, playground, driveway
adjective + noun → whiteboard, software, gentleman
Sometimes we need to add a hyphen(-):
north+east → north-east
must+see → must-see
Tip
复合词
英语复合词通常是由两个或两个以上的单词合写在一起构成。复合词的组成部分有时连在一起写，有时用连字符“-”连起来，有时则分开写。
1. 复合名词：英语中的复合名词有很多，通常在句中作主语、宾语，偶尔也可用作定语。如:classroom, handwriting, playground 等。
2. 复合形容词：复合形容词通常在句中作定语用，少数也可以作表语。如dark blue, old style, kindhearted, hard-working 等。
3. 复合动词：复合动词在英语中也较常见,如:underline, overwork, uphold 等。
4. 复合代词：复合代词主要有由some/any/no等构成的不定代词或者由物主代词( 或人称代词宾格）加-self/-selves 等构成的反身代词。如something, nobody, herself 等。
5. 复合副词：复合副词英语中数量不多,常见的如sometimes, however，everywhere 等。
1.“名词+ 名词”或“形容词+ 名词”可以合成名词。
例如：class + room → classroom black + board → blackboard
2.“名词+ 形容词”或“形容词+ v.-ing 形式”可以合成形容词。
例如：world + famous → world-famous
easy + going → easy-going
3.“副词+ 动词”或“形容词+ 动词”可以合成动词。
例如：over + sleep → oversleep white + wash→ whitewash
复合名词在英语中占有很大的数量，通常在句中作主语、宾语；偶尔也可用作定语，但表示的不是该名词的特点， 而是该名词的用途。其有以下几种类型：
