Ben was eleven years old when he spotted his neighbour, Julie, working in her garden. He popped his head over the fence, and said to her, "I've seen you're very good with a lawn mower (割草机) and gardening tools. The hedge (树篱) over the pathway near here has become so overgrown that I am planning to cut it back myself. Would you like to help out "
Julie loved the idea of helping Ben and their community. They agreed to cut the hedge the following Sunday. Ben's brother Josh, aged 8 at the time, also came along to help. All three of them tackled away at it until they reduced it.
They posted photos of their handiwork on "Our Malmesbury", their local Facebook Group. The community reaction was amazing. The comments and reactions-just kept on coming. The whole town of Malmesbury seemed to embrace their team spirit and felt inspired to follow their lead. Many people raised their hands to volunteer and do more to keep their town tidy. With many willing hands, their town has transformed. Before, the town looked a bit run down, but now, the place looks clean and tidier.
"To keep the projects going, Ben created a Facebook page and website to support their projects. Their Facebook Page "Helping The Community Of Malmesbury" currently sits at 669 members and is a place for all the locals to share what litter picking and cleaning up they have been up to. Ben also managed to sort funding through local businesses and associations. The funding has helped them obtain trees, plants, tools, and gardening equipment.-When community members plan a clean-up, they can contact them via the website to access any tools and equipment they need to complete a project.

Do you often use the words "tapestry", "delve" or "testament" in English Many of us would say no. These words aren't among the "Top 500 spoken words"—a list of the most common English words. However, these words are becoming more common in some written content, as a study in 2024 found that five percent of all articles published on a research site used the word "delve." In 2022, it was less than one percent.
Since ChatGPT was released to the public in November 2022, we've seen that artificial intelligence (AI) favors certain words. Why does ChatGPT prefer these words The answer is actually very human. While ChatGPT seems to think for itself, what it really does is analyze a very large amount of human-generated information, and use the data to spit out answers to our enquiry (询问). It doesn't actually understand what it's telling us.
The process of rating AI responses, as part of training the software, is called "reinforcement (强化) learning from human feedback", and this provides the first clue about why ChatGPT favors certain word. It's not cheap to employ a lot of testers to rate thousands of responses from AI. So, big companies outsource these jobs to lower-income countries, often places where English is not the first language. One such country that offers cheap labor is Nigeria, and in Nigerian English, "delve" is a common word in professional settings. So, when Nigerian testers tell AI which responses sound natural, their own linguistic preferences come through.
As AI-generated content becomes more common, will it also affect the way we speak to each other In some ways, AI has already left its mark. Of course, language is a living thing, often affected by current events and by new technology. The point is that language is always updating itself, and how we use language is affected by the people we talk to and by the media we consume. As AI-generated media spread, it is possible, even likely that AI will affect the development of our own vocabulary.
28. Why does the author mention the words we don't often use
A. To raise readers' interest in language change.
B. To remind readers of AI's threat to language.
C. To show the varieties of language.
D. To introduce a study in language development.
29. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. AI's answers are directly written by humans.
B. AI is specially designed to think like humans.
C. AI understands human language independently.
D. AI depends on human to develop its language.
30. Why does AI favor certain uncommon words
A. Spoken English has been used to train AI.
B. AI tries to have impact on human language.
C. Non-native English speakers work as AI trainers.
D. Companies develop strange language models.
31. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Language pushes the development of AI-generated media.
B. New technology reduces the number of English words.
C. AI plays an important role in language development.
D. The use of uncommon words make communication harder.

There have been worries that video games might damage our mental and physical health. Though researchers have found these worries are largely without basis, there is a deep-seated idea that playing them rots your brain— it's easy to view them as a waste of time. But in reality, is the opposite the truth
For years, "brain-training" games have been believed to be an effective way to develop our cognitive (认知的) abilities or intelligence, for it's thought that by playing a series of games focusing on things like memory or spatial (空间的) awareness, over time our abilities in these areas will improve; theoretically, so will our general intelligence.
From a research viewpoint, the key lies in whether playing these sorts of games results in "transfer" effects—"near" and "far" transfer effects: near effects refer to whether playing one memory game results in improvements in other memory games, whereas far effects refer to whether playing that game results in a general improvement in cognitive abilities. Some studies have pointed out brain-training games show weak near effects. As for far effects, there's no enough evidence this happens.
However, things get interesting when brain-training games are compared with video games. In a 2015 study comparing the brain-training game SnartP with the video game Mazix, researchers found SmartP players didn't show improvement in problem-solving and spatial skills, but Mazix players did.
More recently, in 2020, researchers in Sweden studied data from some 9,000 children and found that kids aged 9 or 10 who played video games for above-average (超出平均水平的) amounts of time didn't show any differences in intelligence compared with those playing less. Two years later, they discovered that by 12, the kids playing video games had 2.5 more IQ points than average.
Why video games result in improvements in cognitive abilities over more specific games isn't clear. Despite some promising findings, it's currently unsafe to say that video games make us smarter. Meanwhile, video games can offer both advantages and risks, so it's important to be cautious and avoid making quick judgments.
32. What do people usually think of brain-training games
A. They are easy to use. B. They may develop our concentration.
C. They are a waste of time. D. They can improve our intelligence.
33. What do we know about Mazix players
A. They had improvement in gaming skills.
B. They reflected signs of far effects.
C. They had a great talent for video games.
D. They showed the importance of near effects.
34. What does the study in 2020 show
A. The benefits of video games over time.
B. The negative impacts of video games.
C. The advantages of playing various games.
D. The limited effects of age on IQ points.
35. What is the best title for the text
A Do Brain-Training Games Really Work
B. Could Video Games Make Us Smarter
C Video Games or Brain-Training Games
D. Should We Stop Playing Video Games

As an enthusiastic reader, I've always believed that the key to understanding the world lies in the pages of a book. 36 They introduce us to characters who feel as real as the people around us. This connection between readers and the text is what makes literature so powerful, and it's why I value my personal library. It's a collection that reflects my journey through the world of words.
My library is not vast, but each book is carefully chosen. I have a mix of types in my collection, ranging from classic literature to contemporary fiction. 37 Each type offers a different perspective, a new way of looking at life. While some books challenge my thinking, others provide comfort. It's important to have a balance. A well-organized library is like a well-balanced diet for the mind.
Among my favourites are the works of Jane Austen and George Orwell. Austen's sharp observations on society and relationships are timeless. Her characters are imperfect yet charming. Orwell, on the other hand, offers a stark (冷峻的) view of the world. 38 Both authors though different in style, have taught me invaluable lessons about humanity. 39 Biographies (传记) and life stories offer insights into the lives of extraordinary individuals. They remind us that greatness comes in many forms. Reading about the struggles and successes of others can be incredibly inspiring. It's a reminder that we all have the potential to make a difference. These stories encourage me to reflect on my own life and what I wish to leave behind.
My library is a reflection of who I am. It's a sign of my love of learning and my desire to understand the world. Each book is a stepping stone on my journey of discovery. They are companions in loneliness and guides in times of uncertainty. 40
A. I believe in the power of variety.
B. I am also an enthusiastic fan of non-fiction.
C. His stories are a warning and a call to action.
D. My library goes beyond a collection of books.
E. Through them, I continue to explore, to grow, and to dream.
F. Historical fiction, in particular, holds a special place in my heart.
G. The stories we read shape our world view and broaden our minds.
