Recently, a new kind of tourism has become popular in China. It is called "special forces style tourism"(特种兵旅行), this new kind of tourism features visiting many places of interest in a short time, most often on weekends. Most of these visitors are college students.
Yu Yinghua is one of them. The 22-year-old girl started the "special forces style tourism" in March after she was attracted by such experiences of Xiaohongshu travel bloggers.
"I don’t have so much time to travel in the last three years . So now I'm hungry to take trips in my spare time," said Yu. She gets trip ideas from daily life, like talking with friends. "But making a plan carefully beforehand is important," Yu said. She added that because she selected every destination(目的地) in the city, she was able to find a lot of information and learn more about these sites. That would help her save time and enjoy the sites better.
Her last trip was to Shanghai. Starting at 7 am, she visited nine local attractions. "That day, I walked almost 30,000 steps," Yu said," Though it's a bit tiring, but I enjoyed it. It still lets me have a better understanding of the cities I go to."
Chen Junjun is another student. Unlike Yu , she likes to travel to faraway cities to relax from her studies. In April, she took a two-day trip to Xi'an, Shaanxi. During her trip, she visited all the places of interest in the city.
However, Chen also thinks this way of traveling is not for everyone. "It is very tiring because you need to visit many places quickly. Also, you can't change your plans easily like you can on a longer trip. So, a lot of energy and a calm mind are needed for special forces style tourism," said Chen.

From March to November each year, Huang Yahui and her team live outdoors, carrying cameras, and notebooks. They travel through forests, mountains, and highlands in Xinjiang to do research.
Huang’s love for nature began as a child, and her passion (热情) for butterflies grew as she got older. In 2011, she joined a research team led by Professor Ma Ming from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography as a volunteer. Huang spent several months working with the team, doing fieldwork and focusing on bird protection, which started her interest in environmental protection.
She is now a co-founder of a nature protection center in Urumqi. The center’s goal is to raise people’s environmental awareness and protect wildlife.
Huang has developed a strong passion for butterflies. Over the years, she and her team have recorded more than 200 species of butterflies. They are also recording and collecting important data to protect biodiversity (生物多样性).
“Butterflies are an indicator species for climate change,” she explained. “They are sensitive (敏感的) to small changes in climate, and their population changes can tell us a lot about the environment.”
One day, while exploring the Tianshan Mountains, Huang and her team discovered a rare butterfly species with shining wings. “It’s the Parnassius loxias. I found it!” Huang said excitedly. This species had not been seen for over a century, and Huang felt like she was connecting with scientists from the past.
However, the work is not without challenges. It is difficult to follow butterflies. Human activities have also destroyed many butterfly habitats. Huang and her team help local farmers make more room for the wildlife to live safely.
