Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. But you will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

“I want my video to record my most senior high school memory and that of everyone in China who has gone through gaokao,” said Lian Yingcheng, 20, a teenager from Shenzhen University. The 18-minute vlog of his three-year high school life got over 1 million views on Bilibili.
However, Lian said that he didn’t expect this video to be so popular when he was making it. “I have loved using videos to record my life for a long time and post vlogs from time to time on my Bilibili channel ‘Mark_Lian’,” Lian said. “The idea of this long vlog has been in my mind since I started high school.”
Throughout the three years of high school life, Lian’s camera went everywhere. No matter if it was a tug-of-war activity, before a big exam, or simply just a Tuesday noon when everyone was running toward the canteen, Lian was always there to capture (捕捉) the reactions of him and bis classmates. “I didn’t want to deliberately design any scene,” he said. That’s why his video is more like a documentary.
With Lian’s narration in the background, the video tells the story of an ordinary high school boy who struggles to fight gaokao, constantly questioning himself and rebuilding his confidence. The friendship between him and his classmates, the willpower through difficulties and his broad outlook after failure are all reflected in the video. “The firstly idea in my mind was to tell an inspirational, encouraging story of gaokao, but then my gaokao result didn’t turn out that well. After dealing with the pain, I realized that accepting failure and regrets is a more important lesson to learn than ‘getting my wish’,” Lian said.
People in the comment section expressed how much they could share the same feelings in tho video. Some said that Lian did something they couldn’t do. “I realized that this means more than just recording my life and thoughts,” Lian said. “I want to keep on running this channel, to touch and warm more people in the future.”
24. How did Lian feel about his video’s popularity
A. unconfident. B. unexpected. C. anxious. D. curious.
25. What do we know about Lian’s video
A. He only recorded his own campus life B. His video was captured by bus classmates.
C. He designed some campus scenes on purpose D. He presented school life’s reality on his video.

D. He didn’t have confidence to get over difficulties.
27. Where does this passage probably come from
A. A diary. B. A blog. C. A report. D. A documentary.
C
High school can be challenging for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be helpful for you now and in the future.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new friends, especially if you are new at school. Being in a club encourages you to talk to people who share the same interests with you. Even if you are the shyest person, you are sure to make friends with at least one person in the club you choose to join. From my own experience, I have made some of my best friends through after-school activities and have had many new opportunities.
Another good thing about joining a club is that taking part in activities looks great on college applications. Being known as outgoing is an important quality (品质); it shows that you are willing to try new things and be determined. It can also help you build skills that you might need during a college interview.
Many teens fight with staying productive. Most students go to school and then come home to spend the rest of the day in front of the TV or on their phones, but clubs help prevent this. Teens are also easily influenced, and if they join the wrong group, they might get into trouble. Clubs are a wonderful place to spend time with good friends who can support you if you need help.
Perhaps the most important reason to join a club is the long-term benefits (益处) it provides. The classroom is not the only place to learn in a school. Meeting and talking to new people, managing your time, and staying organized are skills you will use every day in your life.
28. What might the underlined word “outcast” in paragraph 1 mean
A. A person who is popular. B. A person who is not smart.
C. A person who is confident. D. A person who is not accepted.
29. What do colleges think highly of according to the text
A. The number of clubs you have joined.
B. The strong relationships you have built.
C. The bright personality you have developed.
D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
30. What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4
A. Increasing the knowledge.
B. Learning team working skills.
C. Improving the fitness level.
D. Making good use of the time.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Why should you join a club B. What club should you join
C. Should you join a second club D. How should you join a club you like
D
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself in China, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how wonderful must it have been to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia His brain must have been filled with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. But among the travels to a specific destination, the first is more likely to be the best. Imagine a person who has been expecting his first travel to the United States. Of course, he may have seen all the famous sights a thousand times on TV. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation (消遣) it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not just the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral (道德上的) one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. Just like British politician Benjamin Disraeli said, “Travel teaches toleration.”
32. Why does the author mention Marco Polo and Zhang Qian
A. To explain how the Silk Road was founded.
B. To present travel as an amazing experience.
C. To show how the way people travel has changed.
D. To describe important cultural exchanges in history.
33. What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 3
A. The best trip is often the first in-person experience.
B. One’s first trip is usually the most challenging.
C. There is always much to learn on one’s first trip.
D. People usually make better preparations for their first trips.
34. What can we know from the last two paragraphs
A. Traveling should be included in formal education.
B. Traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle.
C. There is more to learn in classroom than from adventures.
D. A foreign journey may raise people’s cultural understanding.
35. According to the passage, what is one of the key moral lessons that travel teaches
A. The importance of staying at home.
B. The value of exploring new places.
C. The necessity of being tolerant of different cultures.
D. The idea that one’s own culture is better than others.
