Architect Liu Jiakun was awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize on Tuesday, making him the second winner from China to earn the highest honor in the field of architecture after Wang Shu in 2012.
Living in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province, Liu’s career spans four decades and over 30 projects. He established Jiakun architects in 1999 and is devoted to creating an expansive collection of works ranging from small, beautiful museums and monuments and vast commercial buildings to master plans for cities. “The purpose of architecture is to create a beautiful, just and dignified living environment. People’s real lives, happiness and dignity are what we strive for,” says Liu.
The prize’s jury statement says that “intertwining (交织) seemingly opposing things such as idealism versus everyday existence, history versus modernity, and collectivism versus individuality, Liu offers affirming architecture that celebrates the lives of ordinary citizens”.
Wang, the 2012 Pritzker recipient, tells China Daily that Liu’s winning is encouraging: “His works are very local, yet modern, directly addressing the challenges facing the transformation of contemporary Chinese cities.” Wang says both he and Liu pursue contemporary architecture rooted in tradition. Many architects around the world attempt to do the same, yet their style has never become mainstream. “I believe Liu’s winning holds great significance and will resonate with those architects,” he adds.
Liu’s focus on ordinary people is reflected in his largest project West Village, a five-story urban complex completed in 2015 in Chengdu. The complex includes a football field, paths for cyclists and pedestrians, and a market. The block has become a popular public space and a destination for the city’s residents to spend leisure time.
Hearing the news that Liu won the Pritzker Prize, many netizens who have visited the West Village and the museums he designed expressed that his architecture reflects a precious sense of relaxation, much like the vibrant city of Chengdu itself, which is known for its giant pandas, hotpot and leisurely pace.
4. What do we know about Liu Jiakun
A. He is the first Chinese winner of the Pritzker Prize.
B. His career spans 40 years with over 30 projects.

A. Liu Jiakun pays attention to the needs of ordinary people
B Liu Jiakun’s projects are all large-scale urban complexes
C. public spaces in Chengdu are not popular among residents
D. football fields are unnecessary in urban complex design
7. Which of the following words can best describe Liu Jiakun
A. Energetic and optimistic.
B. Outgoing and responsible.
C. Courageous and generous.

One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important people say. That’s what people who get promoted say. But working long hours doesn’t drive better results. Never taking a vacation won’t lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers from Columbia, Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to figure it out. They found busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly, these status attributions are heavily influenced by our own beliefs about social mobility. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. This culture of busyness is making it hard for employees to find work-life balance. According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am. It sounds self-righteous (自以为是的) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
By rejecting the myth that business equals worth, we free ourselves and others from exhaustion. True success isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter and finding balance. Let’s redefine what it means to be productive — and start valuing rest as much as effort.
8. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph
A. By quoting famous people. B. By presenting statistical data.
C. By comparing different opinions. D. By introducing personal experience.
9. Why do we tend to think that busy people are of high status
A. Our status can be attributed to our social mobility.
B. We hold the belief that hard work leads to success.
C. Our own opportunity for success never comes easily.
D. We find few people of high status have time for leisure.
10. What does the underlined phrase “knee-deep in” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Bored with. B. Worried about.
C. Fully involved in. D. Very interested in.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To advise employees on how to achieve work-life balance.
B. To share his personal experience of overcoming a bad habit.
C. To introduce a study on people’s attitude towards busyness.
D. To argue against the culture of equating busyness with worth.
D
To keep a Hula-Hoop aloft (悬浮) with robots, it helps to be in shape — literally. Experiments with hoop-slinging robots have revealed how these rings stay up despite the pull of gravity. The shape of the robot’s body is a crucial factor, researchers report in the Jan. 7 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The shape needs to have “hips” — a slope (斜面) that provides upward force to balance gravity. And a “waist” arch — like an hourglass (沙漏) — keeps the hoop from moving up or down and sliding off.
Inspired by performers near his home in Greenwich Village, applied mathematician Leif Ristroph of New York University began considering the physics of Hula-Hoops. Previous studies, he and his coworkers realized, hadn’t explained how the hoop stays aloft.
So Ristroph and his coworkers gave it a try. In experiments, a circling cylindrical robot couldn’t keep a hoop from sliding down. It was missing the essential upward force, generated when a hoop swings over a sloped shape. But a cone-shaped robot, with a slope but no waistlike curve, also failed. If the hoop began toward the top of the cone, the upward force overpowered gravity, and the hoop would move up. If the hoop began toward the bottom, the upward force wasn’t enough to keep it aloft, and it moved down. But an hourglass-shaped robot kept a hoop stably aloft.
People should be able to hula-hoop regardless of the body shape, by adapting their gyrations (旋转) based on position changes of the hoop. Indeed, the researchers were able to get a cone-shaped robot to hula-hoop by adjusting the rate of gyration depending on how high the hoop slid.
A correct launch was also essential in the experiments. If the hoop started off too slow, the attempt would fail. In successful sessions, the hoop lined up with the gyrating body, so that the hoop and the body always shifted in the same direction. “That’s also the best way to launch a hoop,” Ristroph says.
“We were surprised that an activity as popular, fun, and healthy as hula hooping wasn’t understood even at a basic physics level,” says Ristroph. “As we made progress on the research, we realized that the math and physics involved are very subtle.”
12. Which body shape is ideal for Hula-Hooping according to the experiment
A. Cone-shaped. B. Hourglass-shaped. C. Round. D. Cylindrical.
13. What is the message implied in the fourth paragraph
A. Hula-hooping can help shape people’s body gradually.
B. Robots are flexible in learning human body movements.
C Anyone can do hula-hooping by adjusting their movements.
D. A perfect body shape is required to be a good hula-hoop player.
14. What was essential for a successful Hula-Hoop launch in the experiments
A. Starting with the right shape. B. Opposite movement of the hoop and the body.
C. Using a hoop of the proper size. D. Same directional shifts of the hoop and the body.
15. Which can be used as a proper title for the text
A. Scientists Identify the Perfect Hula Hoop “Body Type”
B. Hula-hooping Inspires NYU Mathematicians
C. How Do Hula Hoops Benefit Our Health
D. What Do Hula Hoops Do for Your Body

Mia had a great start to the day. She had a good night’s sleep and stayed in bed until seven o’clock. Her husband and her lovely son had gone skiing, so she could enjoy her freedom. Also, the house was very quiet and peaceful. “I’ll take a nap before I have breakfast,” thought the sleepy woman as she turned around and closed her eyes again.
However, a few minutes later, Mia woke up to a strange noise. “What was that ” thought Mia. The noise soon stopped, so she turned around again, thinking, “It was probably something in my dream.” But when she turned back to the other side of the bed, she heard the noise again. She was sure that the sound was coming from the window. Out of curiosity, she got out of bed and approached the window.
When she pulled the curtain aside, Mia couldn’t believe what she saw. There were two little squirrels (松鼠) in a nest, which might not be old enough to move freely. The noise was coming from here. The curtain in the room had been drawn for the past few weeks, so she hadn’t noticed that the lovely animals were making a nest on the tree branch beside the window. “I have to get this on camera,” she thought eagerly. She immediately took her camera and took pictures of the two cute squirrels.
The little squirrels were relaxed inside the nest. Mia could tell how peaceful the little creatures felt. Unfortunately, the window wouldn’t open, or she would have touched them and patted their heads.
“Their mother must have left them alone to look for food,” Mia thought, trying to get the perfect pictures from different angles. Actually, she wanted to take a clear picture of their cute, sleepy faces. However, she got the shock of her life when she brought the camera closer to the squirrels. An eagle resting on a tree opposite threatened to attack the tiny babies.
注意:1.续写词数应150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as the eagle spread its wings, Mia’s natural reaction took over

【答案】参考范文:
A Moment of Warmth in My Senior Year
The most stressful term of my senior year was brightened by a simple act from my desk mate. After failing an exam, I sat silently. Noticing that, he gently moved the notebook across the desk to my side. On the page was a small note that read, “Don’t give up — I believe in you.”
Reading this line lifted my heart in a way I didn’t expect. I felt understood and supported, and it reminded me that I wasn’t facing the challenges by myself. That experience brought us closer, and we soon became study partners, reviewing lessons and preparing for exams together.
That small gesture changed my attitude. Helping each other overcome difficulties made studying more effective. His kindness taught me that a little warmth can go a long way, especially during difficult times.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应150个左右;

【答案】Just as the eagle spread its wings, Mia’s natural reaction took over. Without a second thought, Mia hit the window hard with her hand and yelled, “Leave them alone!” The sudden noise and vibration startled the large bird away. It stopped its attack and cast a sharp glance toward Mia behind the glass. Though the tiny squirrels also froze in fear, Mia had to keep making loud sounds and flash her camera light. Thankfully, the continuous noise and the unexpected bright light finally forced the eagle to push off from the branch and fly away.
Mia smiled with relief as the two little squirrels slowly relaxed their tense bodies. Soon, the mother squirrel returned with some food in her mouth. The tiny squirrels moved excitedly and rubbed against their mother for food. A profound sense of warmth and fulfillment washed over Mia as she witnessed this intimate reunion. The mother squirrel stopped for a moment on the windowsill, looking at Mia as if to quietly say thanks, before caring for her babies. Mia’s heart swelled with joy, knowing she not only had captured wonderful photos but had also become a silent guardian of a squirrel family.
