Celebrate the natural world and win prizes!
Planet Earth is a beautiful, wonderful and amazing place. From the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, via tropical rainforests, deserts and your local park, there is a wide variety of landscapes, plants, animals, and insects to enjoy.
Now, with STABILO, The Week Junior is asking our readers to design a poster that celebrates the natural world and write a pledge (誓言) to protect Planet Earth. The winning designs will be shown in our magazine and also win prizes!
The competition is inspired by Earth Day, which takes place on 22 April each year. It is a time to celebrate the planet and also to reflect on how we can better protect it. So we are asking readers to think about what their favourite things from the natural world are and then draw them! This could be anything from a huge elephant to a tiny bee, or a scene from a forest or under the sea. You could also draw your favourite place ---- whether it is a beach, a park or a garden. Then write a short pledge to say how you intend to protect the Earth.
We can’t wait to see your drawings and read your pledges. Good luck!
Instructions
On a piece of paper, draw your poster that celebrates the natural world. Then on a different piece of paper, write your pledge to the planet.
Once you have completed your drawing, ask an adult to take a photo and send your entry (参赛作品) to: theweekjunior.co.uk/stabilocomp (but please only send in one entry per person).
The competition closes on 17 May 2025.
WIN AMAZING PRIZES!
Our judges will read through all the entries and then select 11 winners. Each winner will receive STABILO prizes worth more than 125, including:

At 57, I decided it was time to challenge my mind again. So, I applied to become a Blue Badge tourist guide in London. However, it was not a decision I took easily as it cost me around 13,000 for the 18-month course including exams.
We began an 18-month training course involving 12 exams, twice-weekly lectures and weekend practical visits, as well as day trips to spots such as Canterbury and Stonehenge.
Some say the Blue Badge course is like the test London taxi drivers have to take ---- I get why. At times my head was filled with dates, architectural (建筑的) styles, museum opening times, kings and queens. I can now tell you the number of steps to the roof of St Paul’s Cathedral, the name of Churchill’s dog, and the difference between a K2 and a K6 phone box.
The most challenging part for me, however, was the “pano” training(全景训练), when we had to learn to guide on a 60-seat bus all over London. We described them clearly as we went past: “that’s the grey one on the right now with the four columns and the white-shuttered (白色窗框的) windows”, not sounding like a GPS. “And now as we turn right around this corner and head south...” was a no no. There’s definitely an art to it and one that comes with a good deal of practice.
But finally, after much studying and exams, I earned my Blue Badge. Now I enjoy taking international visitors around London. Things I’ve been used to over 30 years, such as double-decker buses and policemen on horses, are an endless source of delight for visitors. Above all, it has renewed my love for our capital. Because as Samuel Johnson famously said, “When you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life.” Although he never took the District Line every day.
What can be inferred about Blue Badge course and London taxi driver’s test
Both offer correct directions in the city.
Both need a high score to pass the test.
Both require a good knowledge of the city.
Both involve driving through London streets.
25. Which of the following is expected in “pano” training
A. “Tun left at the next street and go-straight to reach the church.”
B. “The red door on the left was built over two hundred years ago.”
C. “We are going to turn right at the next corner and see a building...”
D. “We are going north and in fifty meters we will reach the next stop...”
26. How did the experience of becoming a guide change the author
A. It deepened the author’s love for London.
B. It helped the author have a sharper mind.
C. It strengthened the author’s language skills.
D. It helped the author understand visitors better.
27. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The benefits of working as a Blue Badge guide.
B. The challenges of training a Blue Badge guide.
C. The author’s experience of traveling in London.
D. The author’s journey of becoming a Blue Badge guide.
C
The group member misses the deadline. The classmate talks loudly during your exam study. The parent focuses only on the one low grade. Situations such as these often get our hearts racing and make us angry. Anger isn’t a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others shout out in anger. Both habits influence our bodies, our minds, and our relationships negatively.
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy. “A lot of people think they have to free themselves of their anger,” says Patrick Keelan, a mental health expert. “But anger is an emotion built into us to signal (发信号) that something needs to be dealt with.” When we take notice of that signal and actually deal with the problem instead of ignoring it, we’re usually much better.
One method of dealing with anger is to talk about it. Brain imaging at the University of Califomia Los Angeles has shown that if you name your feelings, you can actually calm the activity in the amygdala (杏仁核), the part of the brain that causes the let-out of hormones (激素) that lead to anger.
It helps to have a cool-down period before trying to explain to someone you’re angry with how he or she rocked your boat. Do some controlled breathing or find some physical activities to reduce the anger. That will allow for the effects of the hormones to disappear, which in turn allows you to think about what’s troubling you.
When you’re ready to talk to the other person, focus on the behavior and why it concerns you, not the person’s character. Don’t make general complaints, such as “You always do this”
Bring up your reasonable points to the other person in a way that is most likely to get a constructive (有助益的) response.
If you’re on the receiving end, remember that it’s good to admit and try to understand the other person’s anger. Try offering to make a change if you are really wrong. If you’re willing to work through heated situations, the other person will be much more likely to mention this matter peacefully in the future. In the end, you’ll both be healthier.
What does the underlined word “bottle up” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Hide. B. Express. C. Improve. D. Recognize.
29. Which of the following statements might Patrick Keelan agree with
A. Anger is a negative but common feeling.
B. Anger is a natural feeling but should be avoided.
C. Anger is an inner emotion that we seldom notice.
D. Anger is a signal that things go wrong with your mood.
30. What is the author’s advice for dealing with anger
A. Focusing on changing the other person’s character.
B. Expressing your anger immediately to prevent buildup.
C. Naming your feelings to calm down before discussing.
D. Using sentences like “you always...” to stress your point.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Why is anger a healthy feeling
B. Why do people often get angry
C. How can you stop an angry person
D. How can we deal with anger the right way
D
Say you are given two tickets to a sold-out concert the next weekend. You eagerly text your friend and ask if they’d like to join. Their response “Maybe.” Your mood immediately turns. You feel disappointed rather than delighted; Now you need to wait for your friend to make a decision before you can decide on your plan for the concert.
You’re not alone. People responding “maybe” to invitations is a common yet unhappy aspect of social life. Social invitations can be challenging. People often misread what someone who sends an invitation wants to hear. People often mistakenly think an inviter prefers a “maybe” to a “no”. Moreover, they fail to realize how disrespected inviters may feel when they receive a “maybe” in response to their invitation.
The reason for this awkward interaction lies in something called “motivated reasoning (动机性推理).” Motivated reasoning happens when people understand information in a wrong way. It allows them to arrive at a conclusion that agrees with their own wishes. In other words, invitees (受邀者) believe that inviters want to hear “maybe” instead of “no,” because a “maybe” is better for the invitees, allowing them to have open options. Saying “no” immediately limits their options.
However, there were certain situations that made invitees more comfortable saying “no” to an invitation. In one study, participants got invited to do something they didn’t want to do. Motivated reasoning then didn’t work: They had no desire to keep their options open, so they were more likely to prefer a “no” rather than a “maybe.”
A 2024 study has explored what reasons are better for declining an invitation: saying you’re too busy, not great; saying you don’t have enough money, much better. While social responses can be difficult, the study suggests that being clear and direct is sometimes best. It might reduce your options. But it’ll keep those who invited you from being left uncertain and maybe they’ll still think of you when the next concert comes.
32. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By telling a story. B. By raising a question.
C. By imagining a scene. D. By offering an argument.
33. How would the inviters feel when receiving a “maybe”
A. Relaxed about not getting a “no”. B. Disrespected for being refused.
C. Respected for having more choices. D. Disappointed by being forced to wait.
34. According to paragraph 4, people are most likely to give a direct “no” when they
______________________.

C. won’t do something against their will
D. are unsure about their future schedule

I always loved spending time with my great-grandmother.
MabelWells - or Memmie to our family, was born in 1909, at a time when the Titanic was being built and World War I was still five years away. Ms. Mabel farmed, raised three kids, and found time to run a cafe. _____36_____ But to me, she was just Memmie.
When I was little, I knew that Memmie was old. It wasn’t her aging hands that gave her away; it was her confidence and straight-talk. _____37_____ Sometimes I felt a bit afraid, yet I still knew she loved me. My sister and I were free to dig through Memmie’s basement (地下室). _____38_____ I’d open those drawers, and my 10-year-old heart raced with excitement, wondering what treasures I might find. We read Reader’s Digest, and as I tried on dresses with white dress gloves that smelled like mothballs (樟脑丸), I was connected to a different time.
Memmie was always the oldest person I knew, and my sister and I tried to find out her secret to a long, healthy life. “It must be all the organic (有机的) vegetables she ate when growing up,” my sister said. I didn’t think so. Then, one day, we decided to ask her. _____39_____ Without hesitation, she said, “Don’t worry so much.” Huh.
_____40_____ Always truthful and to the point. Sadly she left us later that year. Growing up, I watched my great-grandmother live with such a deep acceptance of the present. It’s a gift she has passed on, and one I try to remember every day.
Everyone in her tiny town admired her.
We sat next to her, waiting to take notes.
She always said exactly what she thought.
I had expected a bigger answer, but this was Memmie.
She had no deep understanding of history of times past.
This freedom to nose around was like her way of saying “I love you”.
I remember wondering what her life looked like when she was a teenager.

Mom and I stood in the hallway, nose to nose.
“I think you’d better go to your room now,” she said, her voice tight with controlled anger. I turned around, went into my bedroom, and pulled the curtains shut. After turning off the light, I threw myself onto the bed. 10:00 PM. The numbers on my clock reminded me that the night was far from over. I knew I’d been awful ---- I had asked for the trouble.
It had started with a terrible day at school. My best friend had abandoned me for the popular crowd, leaving me to cat lunch alone in the library.
I came home with frustration (沮丧), and unfortunately, Mom became my target. She had baked cookies ---- soft, warm, and smelling like kindness. But I was not in the mood. “Why didn’t you make French fries ” Mom looked up, surprised. “I thought you liked cookies,” she said gently.
Later that night, when she pulled chicken from the oven, I complained again. “Why can’t we ever have hamburgers ” She took a deep breath, her fingers threading through her hair. But I didn’t stop. I continued to complain and argue until she finally exploded. We ended up shouting in the hallway,
Now, lying in the dark, I felt guilt pressed heavily on my chest. Why had I taken my bad day out on her I replayed the scene again and again, wishing I had just talked to her instead. Suddenly, noises from the kitchen broke the silence. A whirring (机器运转的嗡嗡声) from the kitchen. The clank (碰撞的当啷声) of dishes. “What’s going on ” I wondered.
The minutes stretched long, but finally soft footsteps approached (接近) and my bedroom door silently opened. A sliver of light cut across my face. Mom stood there, her expression unreadable. “Come with me,” she whispered. Anxious and confused, I followed her down the dark hallway.
