Call for Contributions
Dear fellow students,
To spark passion for space exploration and share creative visions of humanity’s cosmic future, our school English magazine Cosmic Window will launch a new column “Space & Future”. Therefore, we’re now calling for your contributions!
Your work should focus on space-related themes: future space travel, life on other planets, or space technology’s impact on daily life, to name but a few. Moreover, forms may vary, ranging from formal essays to imaginative short stories and constructive personal opinions. However, original content with clear logic and vivid expressions is always preferred.
Please send your submissions to cosmicwindow@ by June 30th. We’re excited to see your unique ideas shine!
Best regards,
Cosmic Window Magazine
第二节 读后续写
“OMG! Are you ok ” A woman’s voice cut through the scene. Through blurred vision, Leo saw a pair of boots stop beside them. The stranger, knelt down, her red overcoat spreading like a rose on the pavement. She pressed a silk scarf to Leo’s bleeding elbow while checking Lily’s shaking legs and then helped them up. “My daughter’s about her age,” she said softly. When Lily whispered “Mama,” the woman’s eyes softened. “You’re doing this alone, aren’t you ” He responded with a nod. Out of sympathy for him, she decided to offer a hand.
She connected him to a program aiding single parents. The program offered care for kids when the parents were not available. During Leo’s evening deliveries, caregivers taught Lily nursery rhymes in a room painted with sunflowers, her tiny hands molding clay while his repaired bike carried meals across town. His phone received photos of Lily napping under a quilt, her cheeks rosy against doggie-dot pillows. As winter winds cut the streets, he pedaled steadily, knowing Lily was warm and sound in the cosy room thanks to those angelic helpers.

Text 1
M: The gym was great on the whole. The equipment was all new. But the changing room was rather small.
W: I wouldn’t mind that, but the water bar was really crowded. It was horrible that we had to rest on the ground.
Text 2
W: The line is so long here! I don’t see any chance for us to get in. Let’s go to the restaurant around the corner instead.
M: But the food here is great! Are you sure you want to make a change
W: Yes, I am.
Text 3
W: Hi, Henry. I heard you’ve travelled a lot recently.
M: Yeah, I just came back from Africa.
W: Well, I really envy you.
M: You won’t if you know how tiring it was. Now, I just want to take a break. A long break.
Text 4
W: Please give me a second. I’ll see whether Dr. Banks is available.
M: OK.
W: Sorry, he’s with a patient right now. It’s probably going to be about another 30 minutes. Would you mind waiting a little longer
M: I’ve been waiting since 8:20 and it’s been half an hour.
Text 5
W: Have you heard about the soup kitchen in our community
M: Yeah, I heard they’re providing meals for those in need. Are you planning to volunteer
W: Sure. It’s a great way to give back to the community. Do you want to join me
M: You bet!
Text 6
W: Hi, Paul. You look unhappy.
M: My computer went wrong this morning and I have to get a paper finished for class on Monday.
W: You can always go to the library.
M: The library isn’t open on Saturday afternoons and Sundays and I have to take care of my baby sister this morning.
W: That’s a problem My family is having friends over this afternoon so it won’t be possible for you to come to my place. I can lend you my computer.
M: Wow! Sally, that’s great!
Text 7
M: Are you going to be home at 3:00 pm today, or are you staying late at work
W: I’m not staying late, but I’m going to stop by the grocery store on my way home. Why
M: I have something being delivered around 5:00 pm and I want to make sure someone is there to receive it.
W: Oh, okay. I can be home by 5:00 pm, but the kids will both be home from soccer practice by then. One of them could sign for it.
M: No, they can’t, because it is a box of wine. The delivery person will need to see identification to make sure the person signing is over 21 years old. Our kids are not old enough yet.
W: Fine. I will hurry home before the wine arrives.
Text 8
M: Hey, I guess it’s your book. It dropped right at my foot.
W: Oh, yeah. Thank you. I just dozed off. The night flight can be really tiring. I’m Anna. Nice to meet you.
M: Nice to meet you, too. I’m Chandler. Are you flying to France for travel
W: Yes. I’ll travel with my friends and go shopping. And you
M: Just for work. You know, the usual work-related trip.
W: I see. You look like an Asian. Are you from Thailand
M: You’re half-right. My mother is Thai, but I’m from London. Where are you from
W: I’m from Amsterdam.
M: Ah, Amsterdam. It is the capital and the most populated city of the Netherlands.
W: Spot on! Have you been to the Netherlands
M: Yes, I was there for traveling.
Text 9
W: Aaron, do you know anything about Chinese martial arts
M: Absolutely! There’s so much diversity in Chinese martial arts.
W: Yeah. I love Tai Chi best for its graceful movements and health benefits. How about you
M: It’s hard to pick just one. I love Shaolin Kung Fu. And I’m into Wing Chun. The focus on close-range combat and efficiency is impressive. Besides, drunken boxing is also attractive. The appeal lies in its uniquely entertaining combination of smooth, unpredictable movements and comedic elements.
W: I see you really like Chinese martial arts. So how do you view the importance of Chinese martial arts
M: Well, apart from self-defense, they are deeply rooted in Chinese culture, promoting discipline and respect.
W: Yeah, and they also reflect Chinese philosophy. The yin-yang concept is evident in the balance between offense and defense.
Text10
As a game designer, I’m largely concerned with the visual material so my background is also quite artistic. I have a degree in art and design. I did courses in painting and drawing at university. But as you’d expect I also did one in computer graphics. I’ve worked on many great games. Purple Moon was my first big challenge and I had a key role in Defending Planet X. But the one I got the most out of was Star City because I was working on creating a multiplayer experience. The most demanding aspect of a game, however, is hitting the right level of difficulty. You want the game to be hard enough to reward people who are skillful but not so hard that people become frustrated and stop playing. What does it take to be a game designer You need creativity to have a vision to see what will make a game fun. You need communication to express that vision to others and influence them. And above all, you need devotion to make your vision of reality to work your way through the disappointments and failures.
