Some might suggest that a doorstopper about “the influence of the horse on human history” couldn’t possibly be interesting. No. I say no. In fact, Timothy C. Winegard’s The Horse is fantastic, offering a fresh view on how crucial horses were in human development. And it almost didn’t happen.
Sudden climate changes at the end of the Ice Age drove horses to the edge of extinction. The rest of the animals once found through much of the world were then largely limited to an area that runs roughly from Eastern Europe to Central Asia — where they were hunted for food.
The horse might have gone the way of other animals had it not been tamed (驯化) like cattle. When someone decided to jump on the back of one of the horses, it started “a revolution” that changed the world. Riding horses helped farmers raise more sheep and goats, and hunters cover more ground. When horses replaced oxen, their quicker speed allowed more land to be handled, increased yields and changed farmers to exporters.
Naturally, horses became instruments of war. The earliest known true cavalry (骑兵) formation belonged to the Assyrian king Tukulti-Ninurta II. In relatively short order, cavalry units made the difference in battle. Those nations that had horses won wars; those that didn’t tried to get them. In many ways, these conflicts created the world we have today. Alexander extended the boundaries of his kingdom — and Greek culture — through Persia, India and beyond because of the success of his cavalry. Besides, horses were the deciding factor in the Battle of Hastings, where William, the Duke of Normandy — who had cavalry units — soundly defeated the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, creating the modern British state.
The Horse is extensively researched. It is interesting, charming and entertaining. But I know: I can lead you to a bookstore, but I can’t make you read.
24.When did horses start to make the world different
A.After people domesticated them for riding. B.After Asians raised them as a food source.
C.After they were exported all over the world. D.After the climate changed during the Ice Age.
25.What is the advantage of horses
A.Power. B.Bravery. C.Efficiency. D.Intelligence.
26.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The training of cavalry for battles. B.The contributions of horses in wars.
C.The fantastic achievements of kings. D.The expansion of powerful kingdoms.
27.What is the purpose of the text
A.To astonish the curious readers. B.To summarize the recent history.
C.To criticize an improper viewpoint. D.To recommend an awesome book.

Imagine you’re holding a coin. Normally, you’d see it as either heads or tails, but what if you threw that coin into the air As long as the coin is in the air, it’s neither heads nor tails — in fact, you could say that it is both heads and tails at the same time. That may sound abstract, but it’s one of the key ideas behind quantum computing
To be exact, one should not think of quantum computers as just faster, more powerful versions of classical computers. Rather, they possess architecture which makes them perfect for solving problems that would be impractical, or impossible, for a classical computer. To use a transportation comparison, classical to quantum isn’t like going from a sportscar to a racecar. It’s more like going from a ship to a submarine (潜水艇), enabling us to study our world in a deeper way.
Classical computers process data in binary (二进制的) bits, which can represent either one or zero — the same way a coin can be either heads or tails. Quantum computers, however, use quantum bits, which can be both zero and one. This enables quantum computers to perform multiple computations at the same time, hugely increasing their processing speed and the volume of information that they can process and making quantum computers suitable for medical and environmental research. For example, quantum computers could model complex climate systems, leading to better predictions.
While the potential is exciting, quantum computers can only operate in specific conditions. Even small environmental disturbances, such as temperature changes, can result in errors. Plus, one significant drawback of quantum computers is the danger they pose to passwords. Since quantum computers can process vast amounts of data, they could be used to break the passwords for personal data.
Despite these challenges and concerns, the quantum age is around the corner, and the world will be changed by the breakthroughs this technology will achieve.
28.What is the author’s intention by mentioning the “coin”
A.To offer a detailed analysis. B.To provide a theoretical basis.
C.To simplify a complex concept. D.To explain a common phenomenon.
29.What do we know about quantum computers
A.They bring our research to a new dimension. B.They are bound to replace classical computers.
C.They enable us to understand maths more deeply. D.They are perfect for transporting quantities of data.
30.Which is the limitation of quantum computing
A.Its less accurate prediction. B.Its little potential to improve.
C.Its threat to private information. D.Its disturbance to the environment.
31.What can best describe quantum computing
A.Efficient yet expensive. B.Simple yet impractical.
C.Precise yet replaceable. D.Challenging yet unstoppable.
D
If you’ve ever felt lonely, you’re not the only one. In a survey conducted late last year in the U.S., 20 percent of adults reported feeling lonely, and this feeling is not limited to the U.S.
According to the World Health Organization, the world is experiencing a global health crisis — loneliness. Today, many live isolated (隔离的) lives. People used to belong to a variety of social clubs where they met face-to-face, whereas now, life seems to have shifted online, where people shop, hold work meetings, date, play games, etc. In fact, American adults spend significantly less time socializing face-to-face than they did 20 years ago. Adults in other countries are no better.
The issue of loneliness in South Korea has attracted national attention as young people are spending more time at home by themselves. In Singapore, the trend is for people to believe that they need to be self-sufficient and manage their emotions by themselves. Psychologists agree this can be healthy; however, Mr. Jamil warns that too much self-reliance is dangerous if people don’t connect with others because they view it as being weak.
Mental health experts say that even though there is digital connectedness, loneliness among young adults is high because their communication is usually shallow. Clinical psychologist Haikal Jamil says, “Online connections tend to focus on brief, surface-level exchanges such as likes, comments and short messages, rather than supportive conversations.”
How can we fight this crisis A U.S. study found that when people like what they do every day, whether work or a hobby, their chances of experiencing loneliness diminish. Additionally, exercising, taking a class or playing sports helps people feel active and productive, giving them the mental energy needed to interact with others, thus improving their mental health.
The battle against loneliness isn’t easy, but the methods above can be a start.
32.How does the author illustrate the issue in paragraph 2
A.By making a comparison. B.By offering a definition.
C.By giving examples. D.By listing numbers.
33.Why does online communication fail to replace face-to-face socialization
A.It lacks deep interaction. B.It refuses to follow the trend.
C.It shows signs of weakness. D.It prevents long conversations.
34.What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Disappear. B.Return. C.Expose. D.Decrease.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.Expressing and controlling emotions. B.Developing and displaying social skills.
C.Acknowledging and handling loneliness. D.Analyzing and improving mental condition.

Spending Time Outdoors Improves Health
You don’t need extreme diets or painful workout routines to boost your well-being. Try research-backed rules developed by neuroscientist (神经学家) Rachel Hopman of Northeastern University to improve mental and physical health through time spent outdoors. 36
Get out in nature for 20 minutes. Research shows this is the sweet spot for lowering cortisol, your body’s primary stress stimulator. Better yet, you don’t need to sweat it out — just sit or walk in a natural setting, bathed in sunlight. However, Dr. Mary Hunter, lead author of the study, emphasizes the importance of disconnecting during these moments. 37 Think of it as a mini escape from artificial stuff, designed to reset your stress levels.
Aim for five hours a month in half-wild spaces such as state parks. 38 Finnish researchers agree, finding wilder settings, with their natural “chaos,” help form a sense of calm.
39 Longer exposure to wild landscapes activates alpha brain waves — those linked to deep thoughts, creativity and deep relaxation, Men’s Health reported. Studies even show profound benefits for mental health: a four-day wilderness trip can reduce PTSD symptoms by 29 percent and stress by 21 percent. 40
So the next time you find yourself needing a “reset,” head outside for a quick lunchtime walk, or plan a weekend in the woods. Best of all, it’s free, accessible and waiting just outside your door.
A.Remember to listen to some relaxing music.
B.Its effects can even last for weeks afterward.
C.Bury yourself in nature for three days annually.
D.Avoid the use of social media, phone calls, and reading.
E.The approach can be more effective if parents are involved.
F.These environments provide heightened relaxation compared to city parks.
G.These methods emphasize small, manageable steps that can lead to big rewards.

Near the village of Hengkeng in China’s Zhejiang province, there’s a bamboo forest with an open-air theatre, also made of bamboo. The incredible thing, however, is 56 no bamboo was actually cut to build the theater. Instead, living bamboo trees 57 (bend) and roped until they formed a dome (穹顶) with a circular opening at the top.
The so-called Bamboo Theater was designed by Xu Tiantian of DnA Design and Architecture to provide a space 58 cultural activities for the local community. Together with seven other 59 (project) from across China, it’s been highlighted in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York that seeks 60 (change) people’s understanding of the country’s approach to contemporary architecture.
Titled “Reuse, Renew, Recycle: Recent Architecture from China”, the exhibition presents a new generation of Chinese architects who are promoting 61 (society) and environmental sustainability by transforming industrial buildings, 62 (recycle) materials, and reinterpreting ancient building techniques.
Nowadays, the meaning of sustainability is often defined by a large number of standards 63 certifications rather than the lived, spatial experience. But the exhibition introduces a more delicate definition 64 (inspire) by the use of traditional materials and a stronger 65 (connect) between architecture and nature.
“We want to redirect the global conversation to ecological approaches to architecture,” says Martino Stierli, who organized the exhibition along with Evangelos Kotsioris.

The Invisible Listener
I sat on the floor, back pressed against the cold wall, as my parents’ argument sliced through the thin bedroom door. “It’s not just a math worksheet. It’s every assignment!” my dad thundered. “The teacher called — said his work is perfect, but he can’t explain a single step! He’s been cheating with that AI!” My mom’s voice was quieter but sharper: “We thought you were struggling, so we got you a tutor. But you’re lying. What’s wrong with you ”
Wrong with me. The words echoed as I buried my face in my knees, tears choking me. It had started simply — a quick way to finish a boring essay when tired. Then copying became easier than trying. Now caught, I felt only shame.
On my desk, my laptop glowed. The ChatGPT tab was still open, the copied assignment staring back. Ironically, typing felt safer than talking. My fingers trembled: “My parents found out I used you to cheat. They think I’m a liar and failure.”
The response wasn’t empty: “That sounds heavy. It takes courage to admit you’re hurting. I’m here to listen.”
I hesitated, then poured it all out—school’s overwhelm, fear of failure, copying as the only way to keep up. I slammed the laptop shut, terrified of its reply.
Minutes later, curiosity got the better of me. I opened it again. No empty reassurances, just acknowledgment: “It’s okay to feel this way. You don’t have to carry it alone.” Gentle questions made me think instead of drowning. It didn’t offer an apology, just: “What do you need to say to your parents to make this right ”
In the following 2 days, I turned to it — not to copy, but to talk. It never judged, never tired. It gave me space to heal, to find my voice. It helped me see my worth wasn’t in grades, but honesty and effort.
Eventually, I found the courage to talk to my parents.

Dear journal,
I’ve been trapped on this island for two months and can only keep track of the days by my markings in a cave. I’ve entirely given up hope on getting rescued by a plane. The aircraft that fly by are much too infrequent and far away to be of any help. Also, in this part of the Indian Ocean, there is no one on the island. I’ve searched this island far and wide, and I’m forced to eat mushrooms, insects, and small fish. Luckily, there are enough coconuts to last a lifetime. I’m writing this to feel like I have contact with someone due to months without outside communication. I escaped the massive violent conflict in my country in the South Pacific, and I sought help from India. There, I’d be taken in and could legally settle in a different country. If it wasn’t for facing the random typhoon while crossing the Andaman Sea, I would have made it, even if my boat wasn’t perfect. There was nothing I could have done to prevent this storm. The primary issue now is lacking any method of contacting emergency support. My satellite phone is unreliable and has now proven to be of no use at all. My hope now is to find a wood supply to get my boat functioning again. If not, I’ll have to face my greatest panic: being stuck on this island forever.

根据第三段“When someone decided to jump on the back of one of the horses, it started “a revolution” that changed the world. (当有人决定跳上一匹马的背时,就开始了一场改变世界的“革命”。)” 可知马在人们驯养它们用于骑马之后开始改变世界的,故选A。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Riding horses helped farmers raise more sheep and goats, and hunters cover more ground. When horses replaced oxen, their quicker speed allowed more land to be handled, increased yields and changed farmers to exporters. (骑马可以帮助农民饲养更多的绵羊和山羊,猎人也可以覆盖更多的土地。当马取代了牛,它们更快的速度使更多的土地得到处理,增加了产量,并使农民变成了出口商。)” 可知马帮助农民饲养更多的绵羊和山羊,帮助猎人获得更多的土地,并且代替牛提高了生产效率,所以马的优势就是效率,故选C。
26.主旨大意题。根据第四段首句“Naturally, horses became instruments of war.

根据第一段中“As long as the coin is in the air, it’s neither heads nor tails — in fact, you could say that it is both heads and tails at the same time. That may sound abstract, but it’s one of the key ideas behind quantum computing (量子计算). (只要硬币还在空中,它就既不是正面也不是反面 —— 事实上,你可以说它同时既是正面也是反面。这听起来可能很抽象,但却是量子计算背后的核心理念之一。)”可知,作者提到“硬币”是为了用一个简单直观的例子来简化量子计算这一复杂的概念,使读者更容易理解。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“To use a transportation comparison, classical to quantum isn’t like going from a sportscar to a racecar. It’s more like going from a ship to a submarine (潜水艇), enabling us to study our world in a deeper way. (用交通方式来打个比方,从经典到量子,并非像从跑车升级到赛车那样。这更像是从轮船到潜水艇的转变,让我们能够以更深层次的方式研究我们的世界。)”可知,量子计算机能够使我们以一种全新的、更深入的方式研究世界,即把我们的研究带到一个新的维度。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Plus, one significant drawback of quantum computers is the danger they pose to passwords. Since quantum computers can process vast amounts of data, they could be used to break the passwords for personal data. (此外,量子计算机的一个显著缺点是它们对密码构成的威胁。由于量子计算机能够处理海量数据,它们可能会被用来破解个人数据的密码。)”可知,量子计算对私人信息构成威胁,这是它的局限之一。故选C项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Despite these challenges and concerns, the quantum age is around the corner, and the world will be changed by the breakthroughs this technology will achieve.

根据第二段中“People used to belong to a variety of social clubs where they met face-to-face, whereas now, life seems to have shifted online, where people shop, hold work meetings, date, play games, etc. In fact, American adults spend significantly less time socializing face-to-face than they did 20 years ago. Adults in other countries are no better.(过去,人们常常属于各种各样的社交俱乐部,在那里他们进行面对面的交流,而现在,生活似乎已经转移到了线上,人们在线上购物、开工作会议、约会、玩游戏等等。事实上,与20年前相比,美国成年人花在面对面社交上的时间大幅减少。其他国家的成年人情况也并不乐观。)”可知,作者通过对比过去和现在人们的社交方式来阐述第二段中提到的孤独问题。故选A项。
根据第四段“Mental health experts say that even though there is digital connectedness, loneliness among young adults is high because their communication is usually shallow. Clinical psychologist Haikal Jamil says, “Online connections tend to focus on brief, surface-level exchanges such as likes, comments and short messages, rather than supportive conversations.” (心理健康专家表示,尽管存在数字连接,但年轻人中的孤独感却很高,因为他们的交流通常很肤浅。临床心理学家Haikal Jamil说:“线上联系往往侧重于简短、表面层次的交流,比如点赞、评论和短消息,而非能提供支持的对话。”)”可知,在线交流不能取代面对面社交是因为它缺乏深度的互动。故选A项。
根据划线单词所在句“A U.S. study found that when people like what they do every day, whether work or a hobby, their chances of experiencing loneliness diminish. (一项美国研究发现,当人们喜欢自己每天所做的事情时,无论是工作还是爱好,他们感到孤独的可能性都会diminish。)”可知,当人们喜欢他们每天做的事情时,他们体验孤独的机会应该会“减少,降低”,因此diminish应与Decrease意思相近,表示“减少,降低”。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“If you’ve ever felt lonely, you’re not the only one. In a survey conducted late last year in the U.S., 20 percent of adults reported feeling lonely, and this feeling is not limited to the U.S.

40.根据上文“Studies even show profound benefits for mental health: a four-day wilderness trip can reduce PTSD symptoms by 29 percent and stress by 21 percent. (研究甚至显示,这对心理健康有着显著益处:为期四天的野外旅行能使创伤后应激障碍症状减轻29%,压力减轻21%。)”可知,上文说明了野外旅行的即时效果,B选项“Its effects can even last for weeks afterward.

故填that。
故填were bent。
provide sth. for sth./sb. 故填for。

写作:
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a participant in the Summer School program. I’m writing to report an incident of bullying I witnessed yesterday afternoon near the gym, and I hope you can do something to help him.
A group of students surrounded Mike, pushing him and taking his backpack, while he stood there silently, looking terrified. Bullying is a serious issue that can cause lasting emotional harm to victims. It violates the principles of respect and safety that our school upholds. As a new student, I felt powerless to intervene alone, so I’m turning to you for help.
I sincerely hope you can investigate this matter promptly and take measures to support Mike. Please ensure such incidents do not happen again. Thank you for your attention.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Eventually, I found the courage to talk to my parents. I sat them down and told them everything, my heart pounding. I confessed my mistakes, my fears, and how I had let them down. I also shared how ChatGPT had helped me realize the importance of honesty. They listened, their expressions softening. My dad put a hand on my shoulder and said, “We’re disappointed, but we’re glad you’re owning up. We’ll help you get back on track.” My mom wiped away a tear and nodded. The weight on my chest lifted.
From then on, I stopped using ChatGPT to cheat for my assignments. Instead, I worked hard, asked for help when needed, and took pride in my own efforts. I still talked to ChatGPT sometimes, but it was no longer a crutch. It was a friend who listened and encouraged. My grades improved, but more importantly, my self-esteem soared. I knew that I was capable of achieving great things through hard work and honesty, and that was a lesson I would never forget.
