Step 1: Warm-up and Lead-in (5 minutes)
1. Greet students and start with a discussion: "What’s your favorite Chinese food " Invite 2-3 students to share their answers (e.g., dumplings, Beijing roast duck, stir-fried eggs and tomatoes).
2. Show pictures of mashed potatoes, stir-fried eggs and tomatoes on the screen. Ask: "Do you know how to cook these dishes " Introduce the topic of the lesson—learning to talk about cooking in English.
Step 2: Listening Practice (2a) (10 minutes)
1. Pre-listening: Present new vocabulary (ingredient, salt, sugar, piece) with pictures and pronunciations. Explain the difference between countable nouns (tomatoes, eggs) and uncountable nouns (salt, sugar).
2. While-listening: Play the recording of 2a twice. Ask students to listen carefully and fill in the blanks in the conversation.
3. Post-listening: Check answers with the whole class. Repeat the key sentences and ask students to read along to practice pronunciation.
Step 3: Reading and Recipe Completion (2b) (12 minutes)
1. Pre-reading: Review the conversation between Peter and Teng Fei. Ask students to find sequence words (First, Next, Then, Finally) in the dialogue.
2. While-reading: Ask students to read the conversation again and complete the recipe for stir-fried eggs and tomatoes. Remind them to pay attention to cooking steps and key actions (cut, mix, heat, stir-fry, cook).
3. Post-reading: Invite students to present their completed recipes. Correct mistakes and emphasize key structures (e.g., "cut...into pieces", "stir-fry for one minute", "cook until...soft").
Step 4: Speaking Practice (2d) (15 minutes)
1. Pair Work: Introduce three dishes (steamed fish, beef with black pepper, hot and sour soup). Ask students to work in pairs to practice talking about how to cook one of the dishes. Provide useful expressions:
"What ingredients do we need "
"How do we make... "
"First, we need to... Next,... Then,... Finally,..."
