Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge (花江峡谷大桥) in Guizhou Province, the world's tallest bridge, has officially opened. Workers lifted the "sky-high" steel pieces into place, completing the main structure of the bridge. This 6-lane 215m-stet project opened to traffic on September, 28th, 2025.
Started on Jan. 28th, 2022, the bridge stretches 1,420 meters across a deep river canyon. Its highest point reaches 625 meters above the Beipan River—nearly the height of the Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building. It now holds two world records: the tallest bridge and the longest span (跨度) of any mountain bridge.
Why do we built such an extreme bridge As we know, Guizhou's mountainous used to make travelling challenging. After building the bridge, we can travel time across the canyon from around 2 hours to just 2 minutes! It may also bring more visitors to nearby fun places, like Huangguoshu Waterfall. Chen Jianfeng, from Guizhou's Transport Department said, "The bridge will help places like Guiyang, Anshun and Qianxinan develop faster."
Li Zhao, the chief engineer of the project, expressed his pride: "Seeing my work become from pictures to something tangible, and finally standing above the canyon gives me a strong feeling of achievement."
However, it wasn't easy to build it. Steel pieces weighed 22,000 tons, as much as Eiffel Towers. Crazy wind and sudden weather changes in the canyon made it difficult to lift heavy parts. However, engineers finally came up with smart solutions, like a hangtown cable crane (恒张力缆机) system guided by China's Beidou satellites (卫星), to deal with all of the challenges without any mistake.
Now, the bridge is done and opened on time.
