All human societies play games. Kicking a ball can be found everywhere whether the ball is just a ball of cloth,or a skin stuffed with feathers or air.
But complex games and team sports have tended to arise in big civilizations—the higher the cultural level of a society is,the greater the complexity of the interaction is,and hence perhaps the more complex the forms of sports are.
This is not always the case. The ancient Greeks, for example, preferred the individual rather than team sports. But in China for well over 2,000 years, people played the game of “kickball”—cuju. The members were often young men from wealthy families though there were also professional kickball players.
Cuju was played as entertainment at court banquets or the reception of foreign ambassadors. Even emperors played kickball.
As you’d expect in a Confucian society, kickball clubs were keen on the key qualities of mercy and courtesy. A great player was one who showed “the spirit of the game”.The “Ten Essentials of Kickball” included respect for other players, polite behaviors and team spirit. There was to be no ungentlemanly behavior,no dangerous play, and no hogging (独占) the ball. In other words,as we used to say,“Play up and play the game.”
What a contrast with the ancient Greek athletics where only victory counted and if that needed gamesmanship,or cruel professional fouls(犯规),then so be it.
As a way of national culture protection, cuju was listed into the first batch of China’s intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Though brown pelicans (鹈鹕) have bounced back from the endangered species list, they have been suffering from the second life-threatening event in recent years. Large numbers of the species are showing up sick and injured along California’s coastline, and experts are racing to find out why.
A volunteer feeds sick brown pelicans recovering at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County. The center is currently caring for over 100 brown pelicans which have been discovered starving or being sick in recent weeks. During the starvation event in 2022, nearly 800 brown pelicans were admitted to wildlife nursing centers and received considerate care, with only 394 eventually returned to the wild, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The cause of the current crisis remains largely unknown, but some interesting guesses are flying about. At one point, the birds were checked for the flu that has newly infected so many animals this year. Luckily, none of the sick pelicans tested positive for it. “We don’t have any indication that it’s directly human-caused, either,” says Henkel, a senior environmental scientist. “It’s not a human action of any kind that we’re aware of.”
One theory is that powerful winds may be to blame, as low visibility could be preventing the pelicans from diving well enough to catch their meals, and hungry birds often get trapped in fishing lines. The evidence pointing to starvation as the cause may also better explain why the pelicans come in with injuries.
Those involved in brown pelican recovery efforts note that while you should keep your distance from them, humans can be of assistance by immediately reporting an animal sighting to a local rescue center and keeping an eye on it until help arrives. Such an urgent response can often mean the difference between life and death for a pelican that needs life-saving care. If you are an expert, proper treatment for the affected pelicans may involve offering them lots of nutrition and water, or caring for wounds and giving them relevant medication in the center.

31. How should an ordinary person deal with a sick brown pelican

Considerable research shows coffee can dramatically affect your body and brain. Studies link it to reduced risks of stroke, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, and it’s also found to boost memory and teamwork.
But what if you need to solve a problem Turns out coffee is good for that too. Depending on the type of problem you need to solve.
Say a customer’s delivery date is in danger of being late. You need an idea. So you brainstorm. Any idea. Every idea. Thinking outside the box. Thinking with no box. That’s divergent(发散的)thinking: free-flowing, unplanned, unstructured idea creation.
If you need lots of ideas, coffee won’t help. But if you just need one great idea If you just need to determine the best answer
A study published in Consciousness and Cognition found one cup of coffee boosts problem-solving via convergent(聚合的)thinking: determining the best answer to a question. Even though participants didn’t come up with more ideas, they solved problems faster. Researchers think this may be due to caffeine speeding up mental processing.
We found that participants who consumed about one 12-ounce cup of coffee showed significantly enhanced problem-solving abilities.
Why The underlying mechanism is less clear. Research shows caffeine increases awareness, improves watchfulness, enhances concentration and lifts mood. All those factors improve your problem-solving abilities.
Drinking a cup of coffee clearly works, but just keep in mind that a little more coffee is good, but a lot more may not be. Also consider how much coffee you drink regularly. A 2012 study found that within three days of consistent caffeine consumption, your body builds up tolerance, which means your body gets used to it, and the effect weakens, including your problem-solving ability. Fortunately, if you cut back on coffee for a few days—around seven days or so—the original effects of coffee usually start to come back gradually.
So as with most things in life, consider the timing. See coffee as an occasional focus, mood, and analysis aid, especially when you need to solve a particularly difficult problem.
32. Which of the following best describes the effect of drinking coffee
A.It effectively prevents type 2 diabetes.
B. It helps divergent thinking a lot.
C. It works better for certain types of problems.
D. It has insignificant influence on the brain and body.
33. According to the study in paragraph 5, what is the key finding about coffee
A. It enhances the speed of convergent thinking.
B. It inspires creativity in brainstorming sessions.
C. It facilitates generating a wider range of ideas.
D. It has little effect on the speed of problem-solving.
34. What does the author think of coffee consumption
A. Once developed, coffee tolerance won’t fade.
B. Grabbing coffee will fail you when you feel down.
C. Take amount and timing into account.
D. The benefits of coffee outweigh its drawbacks.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Coffee: a magic pill for Brain
B. Coffee: you can never drink too much
C. Coffee: self-control is key
D. Coffee: a helper in Problem-Solving

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
