Chinese scientists have created the world’s first robot, GEAIR, that can finish the whole plant breeding process. This is important for hybrid breeding (杂交育种).
Hybrid breeding helps plants grow stronger and produce more food. Yuan Longping created hybrid rice that has fed many Chinese people. According to Cell Press, the process usually means taking away the stamens (雄蕊) of the female plant (雌株) and then putting pollen (花粉) from the male plant onto the female plant. This helps the new plants get the best qualities from both parents. For example, if you mix a male plant that doesn’t get sick easily with a female plant that makes a lot of fruit, you can get a new plant that has both of these great qualities.
However, hybrid breeding needs workers to do cross-pollination (异花授粉) again and again in a short time. This work takes a lot of time and energy. GEAIR solves the problem. It uses AI visual recognition and positioning (视觉识别和定位) technology to move among crops. After finding flowers, it uses robotic arms to do cross-pollination and finish the whole process.
Building the robot was difficult because leaves get in the way, and flowers are very small. Traditional computers cannot easily find them in real time. To fix this, the research team trained a new model with 12,800 pictures of flowers. With this model, GEAIR can pollinate each flower in 15 seconds at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay.
1.What is the name of the robot that can finish the whole plant breeding process
2.What is one advantage of hybrid breeding
3.What technology does GEAIR use to move among crops
4.Why was building GEAIR difficult (Give one reason.)
5.How long does it take for GEAIR to pollinate each flower
Teachers find it difficult to collect students’ homework before class. To solve this problem, a 13-year-old middle school student invented a smart robot, and he got first prize in the Children’s Invention Awards. His parents are so proud of him.
This smart robot can collect homework in a short time without making any mistakes. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID;射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, “reads” its tag and takes it out of the name list. Teachers can check who hasn’t handed in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi.
Many teachers speak highly of the smart robot after using it. They think the boy will create more useful AI tools to make life easier. His parents will continue to support him. Inspired (激励) by the words, the boy dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other scientific and creative things. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.

What will you do if you have problems with homework at home Students used to ask their parents for help. Nowadays, AI is becoming a useful tool for students’ study, especially for their homework. Do you think AI is a better teacher than parents
AI can teach math without judging me, but I think it can’t give something important—personal support and encouragement. Parents might get angry when you make mistakes, but they feel proud when you improve. They push you to try harder because they believe in you. Learning is not just about getting the right answers. It is also about becoming braver when someone supports you through failures (失败). —Ivy
When I make mistakes, AI won’t shout at me or put pressure on me as my parents do. Sometimes, AI is even smarter than my parents and can solve problems they can’t. For example, when I had a physics question, AI broke it down into simple steps and gave real-life examples. This helped me understand better and learn more easily. —Jane
Some students feel nervous about asking parents for help and are afraid of being shouted at. Thus, AI is better than parents. Firstly, AI always provides stress-free help and stays calm. Besides, AI is also a smart tool that can quickly collect a lot of information and offer more ways to solve study problems. Lastly, AI is always available and never gets tired. It can help students anytime. —Jack
11.In Ivy’s opinion, can AI give personal support and encouragement
12.How did AI help Jane when she had a physics problem
13.What do Jane and Jack think of AI when they need help
14.When you have problems with homework, who will you ask for help, AI or your parents Why (about 30 words)

Forum (论坛): Technology (科技) and Daily Life
Host: Hello, everyone! Technology has changed our life a lot. Today, Tom, Jack and Anna will talk about how technology helps them in daily life—and how to use it wisely.
Tom (13, Beijing)—E-reader I got an E-reader last year. It’s small and light, so I can carry it easily. It holds hundreds of books, so I never run out of stories. I get new books online instead of buying paper ones. The screen is kind to eyes, even for long reads. But it needs charging (充电). Once it died mid-story—I learned to charge it on time, so it never stops when I need it.
Jack (13, Hangzhou)—Online Study Apps I use study apps daily. They have video lessons and practice exercises. Have problems with math I can turn to them for help. They check homework fast, too. But I set a timer (计时器) now. If I use them too long, I will forget to rest, which will be bad for my eyes. Controlling (控制) time lets them help me learn better.
Anna (14, Chengdu)—Smart Watch My mom bought me a smart watch. It tells time, counts steps, and pushes me to walk more. It reminds me to drink water when I’m busy. Last week, I fell when running, and it messaged Mom quickly. But it needs my phone nearby. I keep them close but don’t check it too often—so it helps, not distracts (分心).
Host: Thanks for sharing. Technology is useful, but it can’t replace (代替) everything. We need to control it properly. That way, it serves us best.
20.Can Tom’s E-reader hold many books
21.What can Anna’s smart watch remind her to do
22.What things do the three technology products have in common

Kristen Tapping, a student from London South Bank University, has invented a bike wheel that can help clean pollution in the air. It’s called Rolloe.
The wheel uses fins (尾翼) to pull in air as it turns. It then uses filters (过滤器) to take in polluted air and give off clean air back into the environment. The wheel can filter more air if it goes faster, although it still works at low speeds (速度).
Tapping said users would need to change the filter every week or after about 250 kilometers, to make sure the wheel continues to work well. The wheel fits in the front of a standard (标准的) bike and weighs about one kilogram.
Tapping said she was encouraged to create the wheel when she was biking around London. “In traffic, you always notice the pollution, the heat, the gases and the smell,” she said. She predicts that if 10 percent of the riders in London had a Rolloe on their bike, they could filter about 266,865 m of air a day, although this has yet to be tested.
A recent report shows that London’s health costs because of air pollution are the highest among all the European cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also said that outdoor air pollution causes about 4.2 million deaths around the world each year.
Tapping wants to use the wheel on shared bike projects at first, with the aim of making the wheels available for all bikes to use. She says she would also like to create a wheel that would fit in the back of a bike, as well as making them available in different sizes.
24.What does the wheel use filters to do
25.When does the user need to change the filter
26.Where does the wheel fit

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics surprisingly didn’t go to a typical physicist, instead, to two pioneers in machine learning: John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton. What they did was to use principles from physics to make discoveries in machine learning, which pushed the development of AI. This is a perfect example of joining ideas from different subjects to achieve a breakthrough (突破). It’s cross-disciplinary learning at its best.
In simple terms, cross-disciplinary learning is about not sticking to just one subject. It means being curious and open to ideas from different fields—whether it’s science, art, history or technology—and using that knowledge to improve our own understanding.
Cross-disciplinary learning is nothing new. We have seen many examples over the centuries. Even the ancient Greeks practiced it. They believed that music, math and astronomy (天文学) were interconnected. This helped them make groundbreaking discoveries.
Great minds like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Zhang Heng gave us amazing and influential creations because they were inventors, scientists, mathematicians, engineers and more, all at the same time. These inventors used knowledge from many different fields.
As they proved, great achievements often come from thinking beyond the boundaries of a single subject. This is why, nowadays, schools are pushing cross-disciplinary studies. They hope that by drawing from multiple areas, students can contribute to different fields and make a meaningful influence.
Cross-disciplinary learning can help you gain new opinions, find creative solutions and, most importantly, better prepare you to deal with the complex challenges of tomorrow. You never know where inspiration (灵感) might come from. Sometimes the best ideas are found in the most unexpected places. So, go ahead, mix it up, learn from everything, and see how far it takes you!
34.Who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics
35.What is cross-disciplinary learning about in simple terms
36.Why are schools pushing cross-disciplinary studies
37.Would you like to choose cross-disciplinary learning Why or why not (Please give at least two reasons.)

In recent years, the idea of flying cars has moved from science fiction to real life. These cars, often called VTOL aircraft, are designed to combine the advantages of cars and the speed of airplanes. Some technology companies are working hard to develop them, hoping to change the way we travel in cities.
Flying cars use new technologies such as electric power, self-driving systems and tools to avoid accidents. They can take off and land in small spaces. This makes them perfect for busy cities. Imagine a future where you can avoid traffic by flying from your home to your school or workplace in much less time!
However, there are still challenges. Safety is a big problem because flying cars must share the sky with other airplanes and avoid obstacles (障碍物) . Laws and rules also need to be developed to control their uses. Besides, the cost of these cars must be lowered so that more people can afford them.
Although there are problems to solve, flying cars are good for our lives. For example, they could reduce traffic, lower pollution, and help emergency services reach places faster. They could also change how cities are planned. For example, buildings become taller instead of spreading out.
Flying cars are an exciting new idea of travel. As technology improves, the dream of flying cars may soon become a normal part of our lives.

As you might guess, this is a great smartphone from Huawei, which is one of China’s most popular tech companies. Every day, Huawei’s factories make these high-tech phones with lots of care.
No one knows Huawei phones better than its engineers. They have created these phones by always coming up with new ideas. Some people say these phones are special because they do more than just let their users make calls or play games. The engineers say that’s exactly their goal: to make a smart device (设备) that can do many things.
It all started when Huawei began to study how to make smartphones. Back then, some experts didn’t think Chinese companies could make top-quality phones. The first set of phones had small problems. Some team members wanted to put off selling them. But the head engineer said, “Let’s fix them quickly and show the world. We can’t give up.” His words gave the team courage to keep going.
Then the company let some people try the phones for free. To everyone’s surprise, these people gave really positive feedback (积极的反馈). Since then, these users have kept choosing Huawei phones. More than ten years has passed, but Huawei has kept working hard to make high-quality phones.
Now, whenever people talk about Chinese technology, they always mention Huawei’s smartphones. Every day, millions of people—both in China and other countries—choose Huawei phones. A salesperson says proudly, “Sometimes customers come in asking for the newest Huawei phone. Instant noodles (方便面) are among the most convenient foods you can buy, but a Japanese company has invented a way to make them even easier to eat.
The noodle company recently invented Boost Noodle, a pork-flavoured (猪肉口味的) instant noodle for people who want to eat without having to take a break from what they love most. These noodles come in a small, convenient plastic bag and people can eat them with one hand by simply sucking (吸) out the noodles inside.
According to the company, the idea for Boost Noodle came from a young employee (员工) who loved playing video games for long periods of time. “For those wanting to eat and play at the same time,” the employee said, “they need a snack that won’t stop them.” It sounds like an easy enough task for a noodle company, but bringing the product to market reportedly took two years.
In fact, Boost Noodle can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a snack that can be eaten with one hand.
Boost Noodle can be kept at room temperature for up to 90 days. The product has been available (可获得的) since the end of July, for a price of $4.15, but it only recently became popular online.

As a middle school student, I never thought artificial intelligence (AI) could be part of my daily life. But now, it’s like a helpful friend that supports (支持) me.
Every morning, my smart speaker wakes me up with gentle music. “Good morning!” it says. “The weather today is sunny. Don’t forget your P.E. clothes.” At first, I found it strange to talk to a machine. But now, I ask it questions like, “What’s the capital of Australia ” or “How do you spell ‘environment’ ” It answers quickly and clearly.
In English class, our teacher uses an AI-powered app called “Speak Easy”. When I practise speaking, the app listens and corrects my pronunciation.
AI also helps me with homework. Last week, I had a math problem. I took a photo of the question and sent it to an AI tutor (导师). It showed me step-by-step solutions (解决方案) and even explained the mistakes I made. “Math isn’t so difficult anymore,” I told my friend.
However, my favorite AI tool is the reading app because it reads stories aloud with different voices—happy, sad, or excited. When I read The Little Prince, the AI made the prince’s voice sound interesting and soft. It felt like the character was right there with me.
Of course, AI isn’t perfect. Once, my smart speaker misunderstood (误解) “turn on the light” and played a song. We all laughed. But these small mistakes remind (提醒) me that AI is still learning, just like us.
Now, I realize AI isn’t something far away. It’s a tool that makes my life easier and more fun. As long as I use it wisely, it can help me become better at learning and exploring (探索) the world.

The history of traffic lights dates back to the early 19th century in Britain. London was a busy city with horse-drawn carriages (马车). They often rushed into people, causing many accidents. At the same time, there was a fashion rule in London—women in red showed that they were married and green for unmarried. This gave people the idea for using red and green as traffic signs later.
On December 10th, 1868, British railway engineer J. P. Knight designed (设计) the world’s first traffic light with only red and green. A policeman had to pull a belt (皮带) to change the lights: red meant “stop”, and green meant “go”. At first, it worked well and reduced (减少) accidents. However, this traffic light exploded (爆炸) after 23 days. The light was turned off, but the idea stayed alive.
In 1914, electric traffic lights were first used in America. Red and green still did their jobs, then they were safer and easier to see.
In 1920, a Chinese student named Hu Ruding was studying in the US. He noticed drivers sometimes rushed when the light changed. “What if there’s a middle color to slow people down ” he thought. That’s how the yellow light was born, meaning “get ready to stop.” Around the same time, an American policeman named William Potts created the first three-color traffic lights for all directions. They made crossroads (十字路口) much safer.
These colors were not chosen by chance. Red is easy to see, like a fire alarm, so it means “danger-stop!” Yellow is a warning (警告), like a sign that says “be careful—slow down!” Green, like a forest, tells us “safe to go!” Together, they form a common language that keeps safe every day.
Great ideas come from everyday things. Whether traffic lights or something else, noticing and thinking “what if” can change the world!
68.When did the world’s first traffic light with only red and green appear
69.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 5
70.Who suggested adding a yellow light to traffic lights

Before computers, people got information from paper books and newspapers. Students once spent hours in libraries searching old books for homework, but now they can find anything online in seconds. Libraries were quiet in the past, yet now students can watch videos about their research topics while writing papers. In the past, we wrote articles by hand and mistakes meant starting over. Now, with computers, students can easily correct or cut mistakes while they write. However, they must save their work timely as computers might stop working suddenly.
Online communication is easy and fun—students can discuss with friends in another window while writing. Also, technology helps offer important information in time. For example, in areas with bad weather, phones, local radios or TV stations can provide warnings and guidance to keep families and homes safe.
All in all, technology is our friend.

What forms of transportation would you prefer when you travel, planes, trains or cars All of the above will be improved with 5G technology.
Gacha, the world’s first all-weather robot bus in Finland, is a good example. Telecoms company Nokia has set 5G transmitters (信号发射器) in 15 lampposts (路灯柱) along a 1-km route. These transmitters are then used to control buses, making them driverless and work perfectly even under difficult conditions—in the dark as well as rain, snow or mud.
There are also 5G roads. These roads have 5G transmitters and cameras. They can provide many services. For example, the roads can tell electric car drivers where the nearest charging station (充电站) is.
In Seoul, a smart management system is being used in one of the city’s underground stations. This system has many smart features, including a 3D map, sensors (传感器) and modern camera system that make the station more efficient and safer.
Even airplanes will become smart in the near future. Airbus, one of the world’s biggest airplane makers, is working on new airplanes that will have many sensors and 5G transmitters. The sensors will keep track of (了解……的动态) many things, such as whether the toilet needs to be cleaned, or whether passengers have fastened their seat belts.

Know More“The robotaxi goes at about the same speed, providing a good driving experience,” a user posted online. In the first quarter of 2024, a survey among 1,500 people shows that 97 percent of the reviews (评论) are five-star ratings.
Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. Since August, driverless taxis can run on roads in Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
First, passengers can download an app to their smartphones and tell the App where they are and where they want to go. Then, a car will appear. With cameras placed all over the car, a computer takes full control of the drive.
Because of 5G coverage and BDS services, driverless taxis develop quickly in China. However, people think differently about self-driving taxis.Agree:
*Driverless taxis use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams (堵塞).
*Driverless taxis can provide 24-hour service, cutting down passengers’ travel costs.
*Self-driving technology will speed up the development of the transportation industry.
Disagree:
*If something unexpected on the road happens, driverless taxis can’t react (反应) as fast as a human driver could.
*Bad weather like heavy snow will make it hard for driverless taxis to see road lines. It will be difficult for sensors (传感器) to get right information about road situations, which might lead to an accident.
*The popularity of driverless taxis will cause many taxi drivers to lose their jobs.
*It’s clear self-driving taxis can make trips easier and more fun, but there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving taxis a common and safe transportation on our roads.
88.If you’re at Center Street and you want to go to Xinhua Bookstore, what should you do first to get a driverless taxi
89.How many people in the survey give five-star ratings to driverless taxis
90.Why can driverless taxis develop quickly in China

Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics (塑料) there. She quickly found there were many more tiny (微小的) pieces than she could deal with. It seemed impossible to clean them all up.
Du, 12 years old at the time, tried to solve the problem. First, she did a survey. The result showed there were already 150 million tons (吨) of plastic in the sea. She realized something must be done. So she decided to invent a robot (机器人) that could work under water. She failed many times, but never gave up trying and testing. At last, her ROV came out. It was a remotely operated vehicle (遥控潜水器). It could move through water and pick up plastic pieces, especially the tiny ones. Dana Yoerger, an expert (专家) said, “The ROV is nicely done for a 12-year-old girl. It’s very clever.”
In fact, Anna Du is always learning to solve the world problems. At the age of five, she began to go to workshops to learn engineering skills. Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach (推广) activities, for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Du also wrote a book named Microplastics And Me to encourage young students to care about the environment. The book follows Du’s own story of how she went from worrying about the environment to designing her ROV.
When she was asked about the future plan, she said, “I want to be an engineer because I like building things. I think many world problems can be solved with new inventions. But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”

Wang Taozhi, 17, the leader in this project, put forward a plan to develop a system to study pictures of common minerals (矿物) on Mars. It is also hoped to classify (分类) these minerals. “The challenge is to master knowledge about computer coding, AI and algorithms (算法) and how to put this knowledge into practice. We failed many times but we finally succeeded,” said Wang.
③When Wang Taozhi was in Junior 1, he learned basic knowledge of C++, a programming (编程) language, in a computer technology course. He was interested in programming and spent hours a day studying it. Wang then joined the Maker Space of his school, a platform that encourages students to create something new with the help of modern technology. In the Maker Space, he learned more about robotics and coding, developing a software which helped teachers in class.
④Wang also learned necessary information through other means in his spare time, including trustworthy journals (权威期刊) and even online videos. “I read papers on minerals,” Wang said. “Also, I gained AI basics through some videos on Bilibili.”
⑤To successfully finish the project, good teamwork is important. Wang Taozhi and his teammates You Zhibin and Zhang Beining had a hard time planning their meetings since they had different class timetables and study plans. To get over this challenge, they carried out different tasks based on each person’s strengths, set a deadline and set up regular meetings. It’s hard to balance one’s studies and personal interests, but they have found a way to do it.
⑥“In the beginning, I borrowed others’ ideas but now I come up with my own ideas and have made them practical,” Wang said. “That’s exactly why we support such projects. It was a good chance to _____________” said Li Ning, the mentor (导师) of this project.

It was an exciting day for technology fans—on April 19, the world’s first half-marathon for human-like robots was held in Beijing. The robots waited next to human runners and started from the same line.
“I saw many robots running. Some were surprisingly fast, others had very lovely designs, and their running styles were quite different,” said Zhang Huihui, who joined the race.
During the 21-kilometer-long race, the robots had to run on two legs. Some even wore running shoes. Each robot was helped by a team of human guides, control workers and engineers. They could have their batteries (电池) changed during the race. Teams could even use new robots when the old ones could no longer run.
There were 20 teams in the race and six of them finished it. Tiangong Ultra won first place in two hours and 40 minutes. “It crossed the finish line about 30 minutes earlier than we thought,” said Xiong Youjun, CEO of a robot center. “In general, all the robots today could handle difficulties like turns and small hills on the road. It was amazing that we made history together.”
“Robots finishing the race isn’t the end. It’s the starting point for the growth of the robot industry,” said Liang Liang, from Yizhuang’s Administrative Committee.
Although the robots fell now and then, the event showed that they could do real-life tasks. Liang added, “Their small steps today will become big jumps for human technological progress tomorrow.”
