Guo Yang is a 12-year-old boy this year, but on Sunday he only celebrated his third real birthday. And a man called Billy Schaffner celebrated his 15th birthday this February. But he is 60 years old now.
How is this possible Because they were both born on February 29, a special day called "leap day ". February usually has 28 days. But every fourth year, we add another day to the end of the month. The extra day, February 29, is leap day. And the years with that special day are called "leap years". (Leap means jump)
Why do we do that The earth takes a little more than 365 days to go around the sun – about six hours more. So to make up for this difference, every four years, an extra day is added to February.By adding leap days every once in a while, we can make sure that we don’t lose time.
So what’s it like being born on Leap Day “I’ve always liked having my birthday on the 29th,” says Billy. “ I don’t mind only having my birthday once every four years. I think it’s OK to be special. I like to think it helps keep me young.”
