There are foods in different colors. People do a survey about the colors of food for 2000 students in No.2 Middle School and No.3 Middle School in Shanghai.
80% of the students like to eat in the red restaurant. They think they can eat well and quickly. The orange food looks nice and 90% of the students like the orange restaurant because they want to eat more food there. Many vegetables and fruit are green. Our parents always ask us to eat green vegetables because they are healthy. We don’t think blue is a food color and we don’t think it is safe or healthy to eat the blue food. So we don’t often find blue for drinks or other foods. But blue can let us feel cool, so we can use the blue quilts. If you don’t want to be fat, you can use the black dinner table.

All the ingredients are wrapped in thin pieces of dough (面团) before frying. The dough is usually made from wheat flour (小麦粉).
Vietnamese spring rolls, on the other hand, are wrapped in translucent rice paper (半透明的米纸). They usually have rice noodles, shrimp (虾), lettuce (生菜) and fresh herbs (香草) inside. Instead of being fried, they are simply rolled and served fresh.

Junk food (垃圾食品) is called “junk” for a reason. It doesn’t provide (提供) many of the nutrients (营养物质) we need. In a 2020 study, researchers showed that a junk food diet could be bad for teenagers’ brains.
According to scientists, fats (脂肪) are very important for brain health, but not all fats are helpful. Our brains need omega-3 fats (不饱和脂肪酸). They’re found in fish, many nuts and some oils. These good fats help to build up your body’s cell membranes (细胞膜). These membranes hold brain cells together and help them to communicate with each other.
Junk food does not provide omega-3 fats. As a result, a junk food diet can lead to learning and memory problems in children. It is even related to some mental (心理的) health problems. One way to keep our brains healthy, of course, is to eat healthy food. Researchers also found that exercise was good for our brains. Doing sports causes our bodies to produce a protein (蛋白质) called BDNF. This protein helps brain cells to grow and helps to strengthen the connections between them.

Food Myths
“Only fruit and vegetables are healthy foods.”
The human body needs to eat many different types of food to stay healthy. The Chinese Food Guide Pagoda shows us what food we should eat. While fruit and vegetables are healthy choices, it is just as important to eat foods from other food groups. Milk, for example, contains many nutrients and is good for our bones. We should include milk or dairy products among the things we eat.
“Eating fat makes you fat.”
Eating fat is important for keeping us healthy. It gives us energy and helps our body to take in nutrients. Not all fat makes us gain weight. Some fat can even encourage our body to lose weight. It is necessary to include some, but not too much, fat in our food to help our body work well.
“It’s OK to eat only what I like while I’m young.”
When we are young, it might feel like we can just eat whatever we want! For example, sweets and fri ed foods taste delicious. But we cannot eat those foods alone. Eating balanced meals is very important when we are young. It helps our body and brain to grow well. Bad eating habits may stay with us our whole life, so it is best to develop good eating habits early!

A surprising cross-culture (跨文化) food—Pasta (意大利面食)
As a boy from Italy, I remember one thing when I was on vacation in China. It shows me how food can cross cultures. A Chinese friend took me to a restaurant in Beijing to show me a popular dish. It was a bowl of ban mian. It was delicious, but I couldn’t help feeling I ate this dish before. It was just like Spaghetti Bolognese (意大利番茄肉酱面) with Chinese characteristics (特色), so I was surprised at the dish.
When I ate ban mian, it made me think about the history of pasta. The Italian explorer (探险家) Marco Polo brought back pasta from China in the 13th century (世纪). Spaghetti Bolognesc shows that after it arrived in Italy, this kind of food didn’t stop changing (改变).
My grandma told me throwing (扔) the spaghetti on the wall (墙) can help to see if it’s cooked well. If it sticks (粘住), then it’s ready to eat. But if it falls, it still needs time to cook. Is there ban mian on the walls of the kitchen at this restaurant I thought to myself. Through this, I learn food can cross cultures and change over time.

Do you love street food I’m sure you do! What makes the food sweet Sugar, of course! Do you know anything about sugar Most sugar comes from sugar cane (甘蔗). This kind of plant is very tall.
How do we make sugar from sugar cane
First, farmers cut the top of the plant and put part of the plant in the earth. This will grow into more sugar cane.
Next, workers make the sugar cane into big machines. One machine washes the cane. One machine cuts and turns the cane over and over. And one machine gets the sweet juice from the cane.
Then, workers make the juice hot and it becomes thick (浓稠的). The thick juice is called syrup (糖浆). Workers put the syrup into the crystallization tank (结晶罐). It turns to crystals (晶体). We need one more machine to dry the crystals. Now we have sugar.
Sugar can be brown or white. It can also be in different sizes. Then the sugar can go to the sweet factory (工厂). There workers use it to make sweets.

No one really knows exactly how, when, or where fortune cookies (幸运饼) were invented. One thing is for sure, though. Fortune cookies are not from China. They were created in America. Actually, they may have been inspired by Chinese or Japanese food. Some people think that fortune cookies are like mooncakes, small Chinese cakes with messages inside. Others believe that fortune cookies are similar to a traditional Japanese rice cookie that once had a fortune inside it.
Fortune cookies are so popular that two American cities, San Francisco and Los Angeles, fought over the right to be the “home” of the fortune cookie. In 1983, a trial (审判) was held to decide where the fortune cookie came from. One side argued for David Jung, founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles. He said that he has invented the fortune cookie in 1918. The other side argued the cookie was invented by Makoto Hagiwara, a man who ran (运营) the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco in the 1890s. In the end, Hagiwara won the trial.
This was no surprise, because the trial was held in San Francisco. People in Los Angeles later held their own trial and decided that their city was the home of the fortune cookie. No matter where fortune cookies are from, it is hard to imagine finishing a meal of Chinese food without opening this sweet, crunch (脆的) cookie and reading its luck message.

Finally, people found out how to make the chocolate drink, and it became a very popular drink in Europe. Later, the Swiss mixed milk and chocolate. Today, most Americans prefer milk chocolate, while most Europeans prefer dark chocolate.
New research shows that chocolate is actually good for us. “Chocolate has different kinds of vitamins,” says a researcher in France. “It has more than 300 different chemicals. People who feel good when they eat chocolate are actually healthier. Feeling pleasure is important for health and it can protect against illness.” “Good chocolate doesn’t have much fat or sugar.
