In a church parking lot in Connecticut, Jim Curry starts the furnace (火炉) in his mobile blacksmith workshop. The furnace glows orange and lets off a low roar. It’ll get up to 2,000 degrees, hot enough to soften the metal of a tray of disassembled shotgun parts.
A crowd is watching, and Curry picks out a 9-year-old boy named Oliver to help him. Oliver swings cautiously at first, flakes of red-hot metal falling around his feet. He reshapes it into a trowel (小铲子) that could be used to plant flowers in a garden. “It was exciting,” Oliver says. “I love the fact that you can take metal that’s random and shape it into something useful.”
Curry is a co-founder of Swords to Plowshares Northeast, an organization putting on this event, which helps police departments manage their gun buyback (回购) programs and repurpose the items into gardening tools. Curry says he was inspired by a Mennonite group in Colorado that reforged (重新锻造) useless items into garden tools. Those doing the repurposing are often prisoners, volunteer blacksmiths or eager participants. The finished tools are donated to community gardens and agricultural high schools and the harvested vegetables are donated to soup kitchens and homeless shelters, according to the group’s website.
Mary Ann Osborne first volunteered with Swords to Plowshares when a family member fell victim to violence. She helps collect items through police buybacks. “You see the items lying there and then you see them get broken down,” she says. “And then you see people hammer them, and then you see people digging their gardens and something grows. You actually see the transformation.” She says the hammer and forge are powerful symbols and the negative forces can be reshaped into something positive and peaceful.
Curry wears a necklace around his neck. “It’s made out of pieces of an AK-47,” he says. “I break it apart, reshape it, then transform it into the sign of peace — the pigeon. And that’s why I wear it.”
4. What can be learned about Oliver according to the text
A. He helped Curry start the furnace in the workshop.
B. He was the first one to be picked by Curry to help.
C. He initially swung the tool without any caution.
D. He thought it was exciting to shape random metal into a useful trowel.
5. Which of the following can best describe Curry
A. Cautious and selfless. B. Devoted and unambitious.
C. Careless and adventurous. D. Innovative and sympathetic.
6. What does Mary Ann Osborne value most about the programme
A. The technical skill of blacksmithing. B. The symbolic change from violence to growth.
C. The money saved by police departments. D. The publicity the event receives.
7. What message does Curry’s necklace convey
A. Old guns are valuable items. B. Religious faith can be fashionable.
C. Destruction can be turned into hope. D. Weapons should be collected and displayed.

How do you beat the summer heat If you’re like most people, you turn the air conditioning on when it’s the hottest time of the day. But what if you could use nonpeak (非高峰的) electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that’s being cooled by ice.
Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, is using cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, reported CBS News. Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low, and uses this ice to cool the building during the day. “There’s about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, a company that did the installation (装置).
Air conditioning uses nearly 20% of energy use in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%. Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that. According to Paeper, the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide.
The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the size of a parking spot. Because there’s a lot of energy consumed in freezing water, a more effective way had to be found. “We take water, and add some other elements in it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A&M University. “So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.”
While ice batteries aren’t being used to cool food or to power electrical devices, they’re being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It’s a win-win for all.
8. What do we know about the way Eleven Madison cools the building
A. It uses air conditioning all day long.
B. It freezes water during the daytime when electrical use is low.
C. It creates large amounts of ice every night.
D. It has an ice battery system on the ground floor.
9. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 3
A The necessity of ice batteries. B. The popularity of the technology.
C. The features of the high-rise. D. The significance of air conditioning.
10. Why were some elements added in the water
A. To make the water cleaner. B. To use the energy fully.
C. To control the temperature. D. To add space occupation.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Process of Ice Battery Production B. Power-hungry Air Conditioning
C. Advantages of Storing Electricity D. A Creative System for Cooling

An international research team has discovered that wild chimps (黑猩猩) in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park demonstrate basic engineering skills when making tools. They deliberately select flexible plant materials to create effective“fishing rods” for catching termites (白蚁), showing advanced understanding of material properties.
Published in the journal iScience, these findings provide new insights into how animals develop tools using easily damaged materials — a poorly understood aspect of human technological evolution. Termites serve as an important food source for chimps, rich in protein and nutrients. To extract these insects from their complicated underground nests, chimps require thin, bendable sticks that can navigate winding tunnels.
Researchers tested plant materials using portable equipment to measure flexibility. They found that plants ignored by chimps were 175% stiffer than those regularly chosen. Even among plants growing near termite nests, those showing chimp bite marks produced more flexible tools than untouched ones.
Lead researcher Dr. Alejandra Pascual-Garrido, who has studied chimp tools for over ten years, stated: “This is the first clear evidence that wild chimps select tool materials based on mechanical performance.” Remarkably, similar plant choices appear in chimp groups living up to 5,000 km from Gombe, suggesting shared engineering principles in their tool-making culture.
This indicates chimps may possess“folk physics” — an instinctive understanding of material properties that guides their tool selection. Their engineering skills involve careful material testing rather than random choices. “By combining animal behavior studies with material science, we better understand how chimps evaluate tool effectiveness,” explained Dr. Pascual-Garrido.
The research raises questions about how such knowledge is passed between generations, such as young chimps learning by observing their mothers. It also helps scientists understand early human tool-making skills that left no physical evidence. Dr. Adam van Casteren, a biomechanics expert, noted: “Though wooden tools rarely survive in ancient sites, the mechanical rules behind effective tools remain consistent across species.” This comparative approach helps reconstruct physical requirements that shaped early human technology, offering clues about prehistoric tool use that archaeology cannot preserve.
12. Why are specific plant materials often chosen by chimps as tools
A. They are more plentiful. B. They are commonly used.
C. They fit into termite nests. D. They attract many termites.
13. What does the underlined word “stiffer” probably mean in paragraph 3
A. Lighter to carry. B. Easier to shape. C. Slower to dry. D. Harder to bend.
14. What does the study reveal about chimp tool-making
A. It follows an intentional process. B. It is passed down through genes.
C. It proves chimps are as wise as humans. D. It is an ability limited to a specific group.
15. What is highlighted in the last paragraph
A. Potential criticism. B. Study significance.
C. Supporting evidence. D. Research background.

Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year. He carried a secret burden: a stutter (口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset. Shy and reserved. Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble. Jack's science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack's stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he would shy away when called upon to speak.
Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities. Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods to help him. She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter. Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring, "You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words, Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue. Day by day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency.
One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science project in front of the class. Jack's heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him. How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they would laugh at him As the presentation drew near, Jack's anxiety mounted. Then came the big day. He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentation with confidence and backed to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D

【答案】范文:
Dear Chris,
How are you I’m more than thrilled to share some great news with you!
Last week, I won first prize in our school’s Beautiful Campus Wall Painting competition. My design featured a bright tree with colorful leaves but with a twist. Instead of ordinary leaves, I painted an array of colorful hands stretching outward, each with unique patterns and hues. They symbolized the unity and creativity of our students, while the tree’s strong trunk represented our school’s solid foundation.
I was over the moon when I heard the result. All the hard work paid off. This experience not only boosted my confidence but also showed me how art can transform our campus into something truly special.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】It was finally his turn. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine's, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn't just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.
