"Where's Papa going with that ax (斧头) " said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
"He went to the pig house," replied Mrs Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."
"I don't understand why he needs an ax." continued Fern, who was only eight years old.
"Well," said her mother, "one of the pigs is a runt (小不点儿). It's very small and weak, and it will never amount to (成为) anything. So your father has decided to do away with it."
"Do away with it " screamed Fern. "You mean he will kill it Just because it's smaller than the others "
Mrs Arable put a pitcher (罐) of cream on the table. "Don't shout, Fern!" she said. "Your father is right. The pig will die anyway."
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. She caught up with her father.
"Please don't kill it!" she cried. "It's unfair."
Mr Arable stopped walking.
"Fern," he said gently, "you will have to learn to control yourself."
"Control myself " shouted Fern. "This is a matter of life and death, but you talk about controlling myself." Tears (眼泪) ran down her cheeks and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father's hand.
"Fern," said Mr Arable, "I know more about raising pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now go home!"
"But it's unfair," cried Fern. "The pig couldn't help being born small, could it If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me "
Mr Arable smiled. "Certainly not." he said, looking down at his daughter with love. "But this is different. A little girl is one thing, while a little runty pig is another."
"I see no difference." replied Fern, still holding on to the ax. "This is the most terrible case of unfairness that I have ever heard."
A strange look came over Mr Arable's face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.
"All right." he said. "You go back to the house and I will bring the runt when I come back. I'll let you look after the baby pig. Then you'll see what trouble a pig can be."
Half an hour later, Mr Arable returned to the house, carrying a box under his arm.
"Put it on her chair!" said Mrs Arable. Mr Arable set the box down at Fern's place. Fern came slowly down the stairs. Her eyes were red from crying. As she got closer to her chair, the box wobbled (摇晃), and there was a scratching noise. Fern looked at her father. Then she opened the box. There, inside, looking up at her, was the newborn pig. It was a white one. The morning light shone through its ears, turning them pink.

British scientist Jane Goodall, known for her pioneering studies of chimpanzees, passed away on Oct 1 at the age of 91. She died of natural causes while on a speaking tour in the US.
Born in England in 1934, Goodall had a natural love for wild animals and dreamed of working with them in Africa. In July 1960, aged 26, Goodall finally traveled to Tanzania and entered the little - known world of wild chimpanzees. Over the next 60 years, Goodall's research changed how people understand human relationships with chimpanzees and introduced a new way to study wildlife.
Goodall's research was pioneering because she lived closely with wild chimpanzee groups to learn about their social lives. She gave names to each chimp and formed close relationships with them, learning how similar they were to us. She saw that chimpanzees have complex(复杂的) social lives and different personalities, such as being shy or outgoing.
Two of Goodall's most important discoveries came in 1960. That year, she saw a group of chimpanzees eating red meat, challenging the old idea that chimps only ate plants. She also saw something even more surprising - a male chimpanzee making and using tools. This finding changed the long - held idea that humans are the only animals that use tools. Since then, scientists have found evidence(证据) of tool use in many parts of the animal world.
Besides her research, Goodall traveled the world to speak about the dangers facing chimpanzees and the environmental challenges facing Earth, encouraging people to take action for all living things and the planet we share. “The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves,” Goodall told National Geographic magazine.

C. She lived closely with animals to study them.
D. She was the first to compare animals with humans.

A. They prefer to eat red meat. B. They can make and use tools.
C. They have simple social lives. D. They are not dangerous animals.
32. What does the underlined “those” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Wild animals. B. Environments. C. Humans. D. Scientists.
On September 28, 2025, China opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon (花江峡谷)Bridge in Guizhou Province. This bridge has broken a world record. Its road is 625 meters above the river below, making it the world's tallest bridge. That is about twice the height of the Eiffel Tower.
The bridge stretches 2,890 meters across a deep canyon, known as the "Fissure(裂缝) of the Earth". Its main part is 1,420 meters long. It is also the world's longest single - span suspension bridge(悬索桥) built in a mountain area. As part of the Liuzhi - Anlong Expressway, it has greatly shortened travel time. The trip between the two sides of the canyon used to take two hours. Now it takes only about two minutes. This makes travel in the region much easier.
Building the bridge was very challenging. For example, strong winds as powerful as typhoons were a problem. Engineers used new technologies to solve these problems. They used an intelligent cable crane system and high - strength steel wires. They also built "smart cables" into the bridge. These act like a "nervous system", checking the bridge's safety all the time. This project received 21 patents(专利) for its new methods.
Besides being used for travel, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is also China's first full "bridge tourism site. It offers bridge viewing, extreme sports, and other tourist services. It is expected to attract millions of visitors. This plan will help turn the bridge and the area around it into a major tourist destination, making the local economy(经济) better.
The success of this project is a big step in world bridge engineering. It shows China's great ability to build large structures in difficult environments. It also sets a new standard for building bridges in mountains worldwide.
33. What is the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge famous for worldwide
A. Its position in Guizhou. B. Crossing a famous river.
C. Its opening date in 2025. D. Being the world's tallest bridge.
34. Why does the text mention the travel time has been cut from two hours to two minutes
A. To introduce the idea of bridge tourism.
B. To describe how the canyon has changed.
C. To explain how hard it was to build the bridge.
D. To show how the bridge helps connect the area better.
35. The main purpose of Paragraph 3 is to tell us ______.
A. the cost of building the bridge B. the workers who built the bridge
C. the new technologies in building the bridge D. the beautiful views around the bridge
36. What can we infer about the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge from Paragraph 4

Max read more than anyone he knew. He loved to read during all of his free time. His friends laughed at him because he would rather read than play video games.
One day, Max was reading a magazine article about volcanoes (火山) and told his friends all about them. The very next week, his class was given a science project on volcanoes. Guess who everyone wanted in their project group Max’s friends weren’t laughing at him anymore.
Max ended up being in a group with Liz, Anna and Josh. The project was to make a poster board with information about volcanoes and to build a volcano model.
Max made copies of the magazine article about volcanoes, so his project partners could read about them, too. They also went to the library for more information about volcanoes together.
The group met at Anna’s house that night to organize the information and decide what they wanted to put on the poster board. They all asked Max what he thought was the most important. Then they decided on the following steps together.
The next night, they met at Josh’s house to build their volcano. First, they made a volcano shape with the cardboard, and then they covered the shape in brown and red clay. The red was lava (岩浆) flowing down the volcano. They also put red clay at the top of the volcano to make it look like it was erupting (喷发).
The volcano looked great. When they handed in their project, their work won the teacher’s and classmates’ praise. Thanks to Max’s good habit, they earned an A on both parts of the project.
