In Hangtou Village, Linyi City in Shandong, there stands a special building - the Siyuan Library. It was set up by Zhou Qinggui, a researcher from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Zhou came up with the idea of building a library during his stay in his hometown. He noticed that few local students entered top universities, so he decided to do something.
In 2021, with support from his father, friends and some villagers, Zhou took out his own savings, turned three rooms in his old family house into a library and named it “Siyuan”, hoping to give back to his hometown. Teachers and students from Zhou’s university also donated (捐赠) books and money, making the library grow quickly.
Now, the library covers about 240 square meters and holds over 20,000books. On weekends, it’s full of children reading or doing homework. It has become a bridge between the village and the outside world.
Every summer and winter holiday, Zhou returns to his hometown to help children with their homework. He even invites experts to give lectures(讲座) in the library. “I’m always a villager of Hangtou,”he says. “I hope what I have done can help children become more confident of fitting into society.”

As Dean Dubois, a tourist from France, explored (探索) the beautiful ancient shops in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, he couldn’t help shopping. The Frenchman filled his bag with traditional Chinese clothes, Chinese embroidered scarves(中国绣花围巾), handmade teacups and a new smart phone. “I feel like I just can’t buy enough,” Dubois said.
