Sharon, Age 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don't know what your middle school was like, but senior high school teachers will not care about how much homework you already have in one night. It's best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so that you can achieve everything you need to achieve.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before his or her first day. You will probably love it. I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home-schooled all through middle school and didn't really know anyone. I figure the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I'm not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you'll get used to it. Don't be frightened of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you're afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it's really not bad at all. Don't worry.
What can we infer from Sharon about high school
Students should make good use of their time.
B. Teachers are quite strict.
C. Students often stay up at night.
D. Teachers provide little care for students.
How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school
A.Worried. B. Bored. C. Relaxed. D. Excited.
Who mentions the importance of friends
A.Sharon. B. Eddie. C. Frank. D. David.
B
When I was young, my mother didn't have the money to send me to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.
We need every one of you to develop your talents and your skills so that you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems. If you quit on school—you're not just quitting on yourself, but you're quitting on your country. No one's written your destiny(命运) for you, because you write your own destiny. You make your own future. That's why today I'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education and do everything you can to meet them.Your goal can be something as simple as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending some time reading a book.
But whatever you decide to do, I want you to commit to it.I want you to really work at it.I know that sometimes you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star.No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work. You're not a good athlete the first time you play a new sport. You don't hit every note the first time you sing a song. You've got to practise.
What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. The writer was born in a poor family.
B. The writer's mother was a teacher.
C. The writer's home was very rich.
D. The writer didn't like reading books.
25. What does the writer want everyone to do by improving their talents and skills
A. To spend some time writing books about their own life.
B. To quit on their country to earn more money.
C. To write their own new destiny by working as a TV star.
D. To help solve the most difficult problems.
26. How can people realize their great dreams
A.By rapping. B.By playing basketball.
C.By being a reality star. D.By working hard.
27. Why does the writer call on everyone to set his/her own goal
A.Because everyone's future is determined by themselves.
B.Because everyone's future is to do simple work.
C.Because everyone should do their homework.
D.Because everyone should pay attention in class.

A bicycle may be seen by most people as just another vehicle (交通工具), but for many Londoners, cycling is a way of life. According to a UK government survey in 2017, about 570,000 bike journeys were made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.
London introduced a public bike-sharing system. “There can be no doubt (怀疑,疑惑) that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city,” Johnson told The Guardian.
In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway (地铁站). No matter where you want to go in the city, riding a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice.
And it’s not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride. In many companies across the UK, the UK government’s Cycle to Work program allows workers to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax (税). This means that it’s common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some companies even provide showers and lockers in the workplaces for their workers. More importantly, a cycle-friendly boss may let you off for being late if you ride a bike to work.
Not only is it great for the environment and our body, but cycling is also good for the mind. According to National Geographic Magazine, “Bike riding can improve people’s happiness.”

When I was a little girl, I remembered that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.
Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.
One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately, I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital , my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.
After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

How to Make Friends at a New School

Be yourself
37. If some people don’t accept you, they’re not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

Believe in yourself
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. 39. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from.
Remember people’s names
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 40. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname. You’d be surprised how often this may come in handy.
A. Join after-school activities you like.
B. Making new friends can be hard, too.

D. Be friendly to others.
E. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people don't notice you!
