As a Spanish major, I chose the IES Santiago program because it provides opportunities for service-learning programs. During my first few weeks in Santiago, I visited various organizations to get an idea of what fields I could work in. On the brochure from the Asociación Nacional de Discapacitado Mental (ANDIME), a school for children with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), I noticed there was a music therapist (治疗师) on staff. Since my other major is music, this seemed like an ideal opportunity to get a taste of the profession.
At ANDIME, I was able to work with Ernesto, a professional music therapist, for a few hours twice a week. I spent my hours at ANDIME walking and clapping with the music, swaying and bouncing with hula hoops (呼啦圈), beating on drums, singing songs, conducting concerts, and loving a group of extremely lovely kids.
By far my most memorable moment at ANDIME happened during one of my classes with Ernesto. Most of the students had severe cases of Down syndrome, and several of them couldn’t speak and were only minimally responsive. One such student, Miguelito, was even unable to sit still, make controlled movements, or fix his eyes on anything.
On this particular day, Ernesto brought out a brand new instrument to use with the class. Ernesto held the instrument in front of Miguelito’s face. We watched excitedly as Miguelito’s eyes began to search for its sound and slowly follow it up and down. A seemingly small event was a big step in the development of this little boy.
Now back in the U.S., I am unsure of my next step. Between looking for jobs and picking out which path to pursue, I love going back to my photographs and remembering the school and my students. The pride shining in their eyes was a reward in itself.
24.According to paragraph 1, the author chose ANDIME partly because ________.
A. he didn’t have better choices B. his friends recommended it
C. he loved the atmosphere there D. he had learned music before
25.Which of the following best describes the author’s activities at ANDIME
A. Demanding. B. Colorful. C. Repetitive. D. Ordinary.
26.How did Miguelito respond to the new instrument
A. He showed no interest in it. B. He wanted to play it on his own.
C. He was deeply attracted to it. D. He expressed his love in words.
27.What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph
A. He is determined to continue pursuing music.
B. He feels confused about his future.
C. He desires to work again for ANDIME
D. He is grateful for his experience at ANDIME

Many of us wake up constantly throughout the night and a growing number are simply too addicted to our smartphones to put them down and go to bed.But what's the worst kind of sleep for your health?
Reporting in the journal Sleep, lead author Patrick Finan, and his colleagues conducted one of the first studies comparing the two types of sleep — interrupted sleep and short sleep — in a group of 62 healthy men and women who were good sleepers. The participants spent three days and nights in a sleep lab and answered questions about their mood every evening before nodding off.A third were randomly assigned to be woken up several times a night, another third were not allowed to go to sleep until later but weren't woken up,and the final group, which acted as the control, was allowed to sleep uninterrupted through the night.
When Finan compared the three groups' mood ratings,he found that the interrupted and short sleepers both showed drops in positive mood after the first night. But on the next nights, the interrupted sleepers continued to report declining positive feelings while the short sleepers did not — they stayed at about the same level they had reported after the first night. When he looked at the brain patterns of the two disrupted sleep groups,he found that those who woke up repeatedly showed less slow wave sleep,or the deep sleep that is normally linked to feeling restored and rested, than those getting the same amount of sleep but in a continuous session. "We saw a drop in slow wave sleep so large and sudden, and it was associated with a striking drop in positive mood that was significantly different than in the other group," he says.
As he notes, "we should be paying attention to not just the quantity or quality of sleep, and not simply the quantity or quality of mood or emotions, but the combination of the two."
28.What was the main purpose of the final group in the study? ______
A. To provide standard sleep data for comparison.
B. To test the effect of sleep length on mood changes.
C. To measure the impact of mood on sleep quality.
D. To compare different methods of sleep interruption.
29.Which situation best matches the study's findings? ______
A. A student stays up all night but feels fine after sleeping.
B. A nurse with frequent night interruptions feels worse over time.
C. A programmer sleeping 4 hours undisturbed stays positive.
D. A parent wakes once but can no longer fall asleep.
30.What does the underlined term "slow wave sleep" in paragraph 3 most likely refer to? ______
A. Light, easily disturbed sleep. B. Refreshing deep sleep.
C. Dream-related sleep. D. dreamy pre-sleep state.
31.Which of the following is the suitable title for the text? ______
A. How Smartphone Use Before Bed Threatens People
B. Why Deep Sleep Matters More Than Sleep Duration
C. Why Interrupted Sleep Is Worse Than Short Sleep
D. How to Improve Sleep Quality in a Busy World
D
A new study links a particular gene to the ancient origins of spoken language, proposing that a protein variant (蛋白质变体) found only in humans may have helped us communicate in a novel way.
"The genetic variant researchers were looking at was one of a variety of genes that contributed to the emergence of Homo sapiens(智人) as the dominant species, which we are today,"said Dr Robert Darnell,an author of the study published on Tuesday in the journal munications.
Darnell has been studying the protein—called NOVAl and known to be crucial to brain development—since the early 1990s.For the latest research, scientists in his lab at NewYork's Rockefeller University used gene editing to replace the NOVAl protein found in mice with the exclusively human type to test the real-life effects of the genetic variant. To their surprise,it changed the way the animals vocalized(发声) when they called out to each other.
This isn't the first time that a gene has been linked to speech. In 2001,British scientists.said they had discovered the first gene tied to a language and speech disorder.Called FOXP2,it was referred to as the human language gene.Though FOXP2 is involved in human language,it turned out that the variant in modern humans wasn't unique to us.Later research found it was shared with Neanderthals, our extinct cousins."The NOVAl variant in modern humans,on the other hand,is found exclusively in our species,"Darnell said.
The presence of a gene variant isn't the only reason people can speak. The ability also depends on things like anatomical(解剖的) features in the human throat and areas of the brain that work together to allow people to speak and understand language.
Darnell hopes the recent work not only helps people better understand their origins but also eventually leads to new ways to treat speech-related problems.
32.What does the new research find? ______
A. NOVA1 may have given Neanderthals a real advantage.
B. NOVA1 may have contributed to the evolution of speech.
C. NOVAl may have played a big role in animal communication.
D. NOVA1 may have changed the development of brain function.
33.What happened to the mice after their genes were edited? ______
A. They became more aggressive. B. Their speech ability was limited.
C. They communicated differently. D. Their brain development stopped.
34.What can be learned about FOXP2? ______
A. It may cause language problems. B. It has gone extinct.
C. It is unique to Neanderthals. D. It comes from mice.
35.What does Darnell expect of the findings? ______
A. Better understanding of ancient languages.
B. New treatments for language disorders.
C. Discovery of more genes linked to speech.
D. Further research on brain development.

What is adulthood Societies all over the world view the concept of an adult as self-supporting and self-directed, because it identifies a point in the life cycle.
As Alice Black points out, today’s parents’ fear of letting kids do more housework has added to their inability to feel competent and, thus, confident in themselves. Psychologist Robert Turner wrote about this in his book, The Life Cycle, mentioning a stage when kids learn self-direction and mastery. 36
But Turner’s other cycles are just as important. 37 If these life cycles are delayed, interrupted, or denied, you feel incapable of accessing your states of self, controlling unpleasant feelings, and manipulating (操控) the energy that puts together the fabric of your inner world.
Turner wisely said that “doing well” psychologically is being able to roll with the flow of emotions, manage them, communicate clearly and well with others, and master various skills. This requires an internal locus (核心) of control, which implies self-control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. 38 You’re self-directed and not reliant on the world to tell you who you are. And you know who you are within all this.
So, being an adult isn’t just holding a job. Being an adult is about having a rooted sense of self while being capable of identifying and managing your emotions and actions. 39 We are a social species, so this is important.
While raising an adult is a parent’s job, it’s also our responsibility as a society to ensure that we support schools that nurture (培养) emotional and identity development. 40
A.It’s also our job to support adults who need help repairing incomplete life cycles.
B.They talk about someone’s inability to support themselves through work.
C.It’s being able to show understanding when communicating with others.
D.In other words, you’re playing the game of life — life isn’t playing you.
E.They teach emotional awareness and management as well as identity.
F.You feel like an 18-year old, especially when playing 80s music.
G.When this stage is denied it creates a sense of insecurity.

第二节:读后续写。(25分)
In June 2025, the air was still thick with the tension of the just-concluded College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) when Dongshan High School dropped a bombshell. A 10-meter-wide electronic screen at the school’s main gate—usually used to display inspirational quotes—suddenly flashed a vivid red "Admission Achievement Report," its words so bold they could be seen from across the street: "17 students admitted to Tsinghua University and Peking University; 287 students to C9 League universities; 1295 students reaching the admission cutoff for 985-project universities."
Within an hour, the gate was swarmed by parents of junior high school students, all clutching leaflets the school had handed out the week before, which promised "top-tier college admission rates through strict management." Some even called their children on the spot, urging them to "aim for Dongshan next year." But inside Class 12, Grade 3—the only class still in session for post-exam paperwork—there was no celebration, only quiet anger.
Lin Xiao, who had transferred to Dongshan from a neighboring city last semester, stared at the screen through the classroom window, his fingers crumpling a piece of paper in his pocket. It was a memo from his homeroom teacher, Mr. Li, written just two weeks earlier: "Based on mock exam results, our grade may have fewer than 500 students eligible for 985 universities; Tsinghua/Peking University admissions remain uncertain." He leaned over to his deskmate, Zhang Lei, a third-year student at Dongshan, and whispered, "1295 That’s more than double the number Mr. Li mentioned. Do they think we’re idiots "
Zhang Lei let out a bitter laugh and pulled out a tattered notebook from his schoolbag, flipping to a page filled with scribbled schedules: "You haven’t been here long enough. Last month, we had 10 straight days of classes—5 days of cramming new content, 3 days of back-to-back exams (math in the morning, Chinese in the afternoon, English in the evening), and 2 days of going over papers until 10 p.m. We only get half a day off on Sundays, and even then, we’re assigned three sets of practice papers. My cousin goes to City No.1 High School—same level of incoming students as us—but they get a day and a half off every week, plus two PE classes a week. And you know what Their average score in the final mock exam was 15 points higher than ours. All this ‘strict management’ is just wasting our time with endless papers!"
As they spoke, more classmates joined in. Wang Jia, a quiet girl sitting in the front row, raised her hand hesitantly: "Last year, I heard the school did the same thing—posted a fake admission report before results came out, then took it down quietly when the real numbers were released. My older brother was in Grade 12 then; he said the school threatened students not to talk about it."
Just as the whispers grew louder, the classroom door slammed open. Mr. Wang, the grade director—known for his strictness and frequent "surprise inspections"—rushed in, his face ashen. He scanned the room wildly, his voice trembling: "Quick! Hide all your notebooks, practice papers, and any notes about the schedule! The Municipal Education Bureau inspectors are here—they received a formal complaint about the fake admission report, and they’re asking to talk to students directly!"
Lin Xiao and Zhang Lei froze. The complaint letter—they had stayed up until midnight last Sunday writing it, listing the fake report rumors, the grueling schedule, and the gap between the school’s claims and actual results—had they really sent it to the right address Before they could process it, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway, growing closer by the second.

Paragraph1:One of the inspectors, a middle-aged man in a neat gray suit with a folder under his arm, walked straight to Lin Xiao’s desk, ignoring Mr. Wang who tried to block him, and asked in a calm but firm voice, "Young man, can you tell us the truth about the school’s daily schedule and whether the admission report on the gate matches what you know "

Paragraph2:Three days later, the Municipal Education Bureau posted a 2000-word official notice on its official website and social media accounts, which quickly went viral, with over 100,000 views and shares within four hours.

Example:
Dear Principal,
I am Li Fan, a new transfer student who joined Dongshan Middle School in the second semester of Senior Three. I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the recent requirement that I buy a school uniform, as I find it unreasonable under the current circumstances.
With only two months left before the College Entrance Examination, my focus is entirely on studying to prepare for this crucial exam. Buying a school uniform would not only add unnecessary financial burden to my family but also take up my precious time, which should be spent on reviewing lessons. Moreover, as a transfer student who will graduate soon, wearing the uniform for such a short time seems impractical.
I sincerely hope you can reconsider this requirement and exempt me from buying the school uniform. I would greatly appreciate your understanding and support.
Yours faithfully,
Li Fan

Example:
One of the inspectors, a middle-aged man in a neat gray suit with a folder under his arm, walked straight to Lin Xiao’s desk, ignoring Mr. Wang who tried to block him, and asked in a calm but firm voice, "Young man, can you tell us the truth about the school’s daily schedule and whether the admission report on the gate matches what you know " Lin Xiao took a deep breath, pulled out the crumpled memo from his pocket, and handed it to the inspector. "This is from our homeroom teacher two weeks ago—it says fewer than 500 of us might make the 985 cutoff, not 1295," he said. Zhang Lei then held up his tattered notebook: "Look at our schedule—last month, 10 straight days of classes, exams, and paper reviews. We only get half a day off Sundays, but City No.1 High gets more rest and better scores." Mr. Wang tried to interrupt, saying "These are just student misunderstandings," but the inspector waved him off and kept taking notes.
Three days later, the Municipal Education Bureau posted a 2000-word official notice on its official website and social media accounts, which quickly went viral, with over 100,000 views and shares within four hours. The notice confirmed the report was fake: 0 students for Tsinghua/Peking, fewer than 20 for C9, and only 487 for 985. It ordered Dongshan to take down the screen, apologize publicly, and revise its schedule—adding a full day off weekly and cutting evening study to 9 p.m. Parents who’d praised the school earlier criticized it online, while City No.1 High shared its "balanced study-rest" model. Lin Xiao and Zhang Lei felt relieved when they read the notice. "Our letter really worked," Zhang Lei smiled. For the first time, they saw hope that their school might change for the better.
