Old Mr. Hazlewood mended books in a shop that smelled of dust and drying glue. He was, by his own account, a gardener of words. “Words are like seeds,” he once told me. “They contain life, but they need the right soil to grow.”
I was sent to him as a boy because I used language clumsily (笨拙地). My sentences were awkward, full of thorny (晦涩的) phrases. Instead of criticizing me. he placed a worn dictionary between us. “This is the seed catalogue,” he said, his finger, tracing the words. “But knowing the name of a seed is different from knowing how to make it grow.”
One afternoon, he pointed to the word “effervescent”. “This one,” he said, “is a bubble. It belongs in a description of a stream in sunlight, or a child’s laughter. Plant it in a sad sentence, and the bubble will pop.” Then he showed me “sombre,” which he called “a deep-rooted thing, needing the shade of a serious thought.”
Under his care, I learned to feel the weight and texture of words. I learned that “home” is a strong oak tree, offering shelter, while “house” is merely its timber (木材). That “lonely” has a colder chill than “alone”.
Years later, when word reached me that Mr. Hazlewood had died, I went back to the silent shop. On his workbench lay a note, left for me. It was short, reading: “The garden is yours now. Tend it well.”
I finally understood. He was not just tending words; he was tending minds. He knew that a well-chosen word, planted in a moment of understanding, could bloom for a lifetime, its meaning ripening long after the gardener was gone.
24.How did Mr. Hazlewood help the author understand words
A.By providing him with difficult books to read.
B.By correcting his grammar mistakes strictly.
C.By making him memorize long lists of definitions.
D.By comparing them to seeds and explaining their use.
25.What is the difference between the words “home” and “house”
A.“Home” implies warmth and emotion, while “house” just a building.
B.“Home” represents something artificial, while “house” something natural.
C.“Home” suggests a specific existence, while “house” an abstract concept.
D.“Home” indicates an integrated project, while “house” just raw materials.
26.What does “The garden is yours now.” in Paragraph 5 mean to the writer
A.He should develop his own understanding of language.
B.He is supposed to continue mending books in the shop.
C.He becomes the legal owner of the physical property.
D.He has to rebuild the garden to honour his late teacher.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A.To memorize a precious childhood friendship.
B.To argue the traditional book mending is dying.
C.To provide a biography of an unusual book mender.
D.To show language is alive and needs care and love.

Tens of thousands of Californians are turning to an app called Watch Duty as deadly fires sweep across the state. The app shows a map with flame icons (火焰图标)marking where fires are burning. In addition to official government accounts, the app also pulls in data from wildfire cameras, satellite images, and 911 calls. A team of about 200 public reporters — which include firefighters, journalists, and emergency responders — rapidly check that material and then send it to users through the app.
Watch Duty was founded in 2021 by a California software engineer named John Mills. “It is not over-engineered by design. With a clear presentation of information, the system is very smooth to operate,” Mills said. Due to that, the app gained 22,000 users within two days of its introduction, It ended with 7.2 million users in 2024. As fires occurred, the app reportedly had more than 600,000 new users. Social media users have encouraged residents in affected areas to download the app in order to track the fire’s rapid movements and stay aware of possible evacuation(撤离)orders.
Users receive near real-time information on a fire’s path. “Our team values quality over amount. We’re not in a big hurry to share information that we might have to correct later. We make sure the rapid information being pushed through the app is of high quality,” said Nick Russel, the app’s vice president of operations. “We just want to help people make informed decisions with our app in hand.”
Taylor, a local resident, downloaded the Watch Duty app. She said, “It’s like having ordinary people stay up late to ‘watch duty’ during a disaster. It allows us to know the fires nearby, and even shows us where an evacuation center is. Instead of relying on chaotic (混乱的)social media information, communities can stay informed and safe now.”
More parts of the world are feeling the impact of the increase in extreme weather events worsened by climate change. Watch Duty is currently focused on tracking wildfires, but it’s looking to broaden its services. It may become a more common companion for people as a range of dangerous weather events, from fires and floods to stronger hurricanes, go from unusual to common.
28.What does the Watch Duty app mainly offer
A.Various fire data resources. B.Personalized safety warnings.
C.Tips on future fire movements. D.Detailed firefighting instructions.
29.Why does Watch Duty achieve rapid user growth
A.It allows direct chat between users.
B.It has a simple user-friendly design.
C.It partners social media strategically.
D.It teaches practical engineering knowledge.
30.What does the team focus on according to Nick Russel
A.Reviewing users’ comments.
B.Sending dependable updates.
C.Checking users’ general decisions.
D.Ensuring fast information delivery.
31.How does Taylor consider Watch Duty
A.Confusing. B.Ordinary. C.Risky. D.Valuable.

Now the world faces many extreme weather events, like wildfires in the USA and Europe that destroy forests, floods in India that damage homes, and very hot heat waves that make daily life hard. Many people feel time is running out and think we can’t solve big environmental problems. This helpless feeling even stops some from taking action. But there is hope: We’ve solved really hard environmental problems before.
One example is acid rain (酸雨), a top environmental problem in the 1990s. It was caused by burning coal, which makes a gas called sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫). Acid rain hurt ecosystems badly: It made forest leaves fall off, took nutrients from soil, and polluted rivers and lakes. What’s more, it crossed borders — smoke from the UK blew to Sweden, and from the US to Canada — so no country could solve it alone. But countries cooperated: They signed international agreements, set limits on power plant emission (排放), and started using less coal. Later, Europe’s sulfur dioxide emission dropped 84% and America’s 90%.
We also fixed the ozone (臭氧) hole. It was a tough problem too, as no single country caused all the harmful emissions. Only when many countries joined hands did things get better. After signing the Montreal Protocol, emissions of ozone-harming substances fell over 99%.
These successes give us key lessons for climate change. Cheap clean technologies help a lot. Solar and wind energy are much cheaper now than 10 years ago, and electric cars are more common — one in seven new cars sold worldwide is electric. Climate agreements need time to improve. The first goals are often too weak, but countries can raise them later.
Climate change is harder than past problems — it needs rebuilding energy, transport and food systems that support our modern world. But small changes are already happening. Yet progress could perhaps be quietly encouraged if we allow the lessons of past successes to guide our next steps.
32.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By giving examples. B.By explaining reasons.
C.By providing solutions. D.By showing findings.
33.What can we learn from fixing acid rain and the ozone hole
A.Laws should punish polluters.
B.Technology alone is enough.
C.Rich countries must pay more.
D.Working together is important.
34.What should we do to fight climate change according to the text
A.Learn from the past successes.
B.Stop burning coal immediately.
C.Follow the former agreements.
D.Wait for new inventions to appear.
35.In which part of a newspaper can you read the text
A.Education. B.Culture.
C.Business. D.Environment.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We use words to communicate our thoughts, but sometimes our non-verbal language speaks louder than words. Body language includes facial expressions, gestures, and postures. 36 For instance, a warm smile can build trust, while maintaining eye contact shows attentiveness and sincerity.
However, the meanings of body language can vary greatly across different cultures. 37 A gesture that is polite in one country might be offensive in another. The “thumbs-up” gesture, for example, is a sign of agreement in many places, but it is considered rude in some parts of the Middle East.
Being aware of your own body language is the first step to use it effectively. Good posture shows confidence, and leaning slightly forward shows you are engaged in the conversation. 38 It shows respect and interest in what the other person is saying.
Similarly, understanding others’ body language can help you understand their true feelings. 39 If a friend says they are not angry but their jaw is tight and their arms are crossed, you might want to talk to them about what’s really wrong.
40 By paying close attention to non-verbal cues, you can avoid misunderstandings and connect with others on a deeper level.
So, the next time you are in a conversation, remember to not only listen to the words but also to watch the body.
A.Nodding during a conversation is another positive sign.
B.Therefore, it is crucial to learn about these differences.
C.Mastering this skill will make you a better communicator.
D.It is absolutely a powerful tool in our daily communication.
E.Learning about body language is very important for travellers.
F.It often tells you more about how someone feels than their words do.
G.As for effective communication, observing both words and body language is key.

Wearing a traditional Tang jacket, 56 (match) by a tie with attractive Chinese calligraphy, Joel Bellassen doesn’t just speak Chinese fluently — he lives and breathes the language.
For decades, the Frenchman 57 (spend) his life learning, teaching, and promoting the Chinese language, 58 (make) it part of his identity. All this began with his keen interest in the characters of the language, 59 he first encountered while passing by some Chinese restaurants. “Chinese characters are not just a tool,” he said. “They are the DNA of Chinese culture.”
In 1969, the 19-year-old Bellassen chose 60 (major) in Chinese at Universite Paris 8. Before long, he was hooked. 61 his view, Chinese characters even possess a poetic quality. “I love ancient Chinese poetry and four-character 62 (idiom),” Bellassen said. “They summarize profound philosophical ideas in just a few characters. The characters themselves have 63 appealing beauty.”
Bellassen believes learning to write Chinese offers unique cognitive benefits, especially for young children. “Writing characters is like building a house — you need fine hand-eye coordination, excellent 64 (aware) of space and a good sense of organization,” he explained. “Every stroke is important and must be placed precisely. It’s definitely an 65 (effect) way to train both the brain and the hand.”

Sophia and Jessica had been closest friends since elementary school. They walked to school arm in arm, whispered secrets at midnight during countless sleepovers, and faced every challenge of high school together. Sophia, with her quiet creativity, poured her soul into a blue leather-bound notebook filled with poems, stories, and letters to her late mother. Jessica, bright and mischievous, was the one who could always make her laugh, even on the hardest days.
Then, one morning, the notebook vanished (消失) without a trace.
Sophia distinctly remembered placing it carefully between textbooks in her locker the previous afternoon. But when she opened the metal door the next day, the space where it should have been sat empty. A cold dread washed over her-that notebook contained her most private thoughts, words too personal to share with anyone else.
Jessica, ever the optimist, tried to reassure her. “Maybe you’re careless enough to leave it behind in the library reading room. After all, you always stay there. Don’t worry. It’ll turn up,” she said with a playful grin, nudging Sophia’s shoulder. “Maybe I stole it. Wouldn’t that be funny ”
Sophia managed a weak smile, but the casual remark planted an uneasy seed in her mind.
Days passed, and the notebook didn’t reappear. Sophia retraced her steps, checked lost-and-found bins, even asked teachers if anyone had turned it in. Nothing. Meanwhile, All the while, Jessica’s usual jokes began sounding less comforting and more unsettling. That offhand comment about taking it kept echoing in Sophia’s thoughts. Why would she say that
She started noticing little things — the way Jessica sometimes lingered near her locker, the way her gaze flicked away when Sophia mentioned the notebook. A seed of doubt took root, spreading like ivy, wrapping around their friendship. Sophia stopped waiting for Jessica after class. She ate lunch alone, burying herself in books to avoid conversation.
Jessica couldn’t miss the growing distance. Her usual spark dimmed, her cheerful chatter replaced by hesitant silences. One afternoon in the library, she slid into the chair beside Sophia. “You don’t actually think I’d do that, do you ” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Sophia kept her eyes fixed on her book, the silence between them heavier than any words could be.
Mr. Thompson, the English teacher, walked in holding a familiar blue notebook.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者小时候语言笨拙,在老Hazlewood先生的引导下,通过将单词比作种子学习语言,明白了语言需要呵护的道理。
24.细节理解题。根据第三段“One afternoon, he pointed to the word “effervescent”. “This one,” he said, “is a bubble. It belongs in a description of a stream in sunlight, or a child’s laughter. Plant it in a sad sentence, and the bubble will pop.” Then he showed me “sombre,” which he called “a deep-rooted thing, needing the shade of a serious thought.”(一天下午,他指着“effervescent(冒泡的)”这个词。“这个,”他说,“是一个气泡。它适合用来描述阳光下的溪流,或者孩子的笑声。把它种在一个悲伤的句子里,气泡就会破裂。”然后他给我看了“sombre(昏暗的)”,他称之为“一种根深蒂固的东西,需要严肃思想的阴凉。”)”以及第一段中““Words are like seeds,” he once told me. “They contain life, but they need the right soil to grow.”(“单词就像种子,”他曾经告诉我。“它们包含生命,但需要合适的土壤才能生长。”)”可知,Hazlewood先生通过将单词比作种子并解释它们的用法来帮助作者理解单词。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中“I learned that “home” is a strong oak tree, offering shelter, while “house” is merely its timber (木材).(我了解到,“home(家)”是一棵强壮的橡树,提供庇护,而“house(房子)”只是它的木材。)”可知,home意味着温暖和情感,而house只是一座建筑。故选A。
26.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“I finally understood. He was not just tending words; he was tending minds. He knew that a well-chosen word, planted in a moment of understanding, could bloom for a lifetime, its meaning ripening long after the gardener was gone.(我终于明白了。他不仅是在照料文字,他还在照料心灵。他知道,一个精心挑选的词,在理解的时刻种下,可以绽放一生,在园丁离开很久之后,它的意义才会成熟。)”以及第五段中“Years later, when word reached me that Mr. Hazlewood had died, I went back to the silent shop. On his workbench lay a note, left for me.(多年后,当我得知Hazlewood先生去世的消息时,我回到了那家寂静的书店。在他的工作台上放着一张留给我的便条。)”可知,Hazlewood先生去世后,作者回到书店,看到工作台上留给自己的便条,上面写着“The garden is yours now.(花园现在是你的了)”,结合上文Hazlewood先生对作者的教导可知,Hazlewood先生这句话的意思是作者应该发展自己对语言的理解。故选A。
27.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“I finally understood. He was not just tending words; he was tending minds. He knew that a well-chosen word, planted in a moment of understanding, could bloom for a lifetime, its meaning ripening long after the gardener was gone.(我终于明白了。他不仅是在照料文字,他还在照料心灵。他知道,一个精心挑选的词,在理解的时刻种下,可以绽放一生,在园丁离开很久之后,它的意义才会成熟。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者小时候语言笨拙,在老Hazlewood先生的引导下,通过将单词比作种子学习语言,明白了语言需要呵护的道理。可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是为了表明语言是有生命的,需要呵护和关爱。故选D。

29.细节理解题。根据第二段中Mills说的“It is not over-engineered by design. With a clear presentation of information, the system is very smooth to operate. (它的设计并不复杂。信息呈现清晰,系统运行非常流畅。)”及“Due to that, the app gained 22,000 users within two days of its introduction. (正因如此,该应用在推出两天内就获得了22,000名用户。)”可知,该应用因其简洁、用户友好的设计而实现了用户的快速增长。故选B。

33.推理判断题。根据第二段“What’s more, it crossed borders — smoke from the UK blew to Sweden, and from the US to Canada — so no country could solve it alone. But countries cooperated: They signed international agreements, set limits on power plant emission, and started using less coal.(此外,酸雨还会跨国界——英国的烟雾飘到瑞典,美国的烟雾飘到加拿大 —— 因此没有哪个国家能独自解决这个问题。但各国展开了合作:它们签署了国际协议,对发电厂的排放设定了限制,并开始减少煤炭使用。)”以及第三段“It was a tough problem too, as no single country caused all the harmful emissions. Only when many countries joined hands did things get better. After signing the Montreal Protocol, emissions of ozone-harming substances fell over 99%.(臭氧层空洞也是一个棘手的问题,因为并非单个国家造成了所有有害排放。只有当许多国家携手合作,情况才有所好转。在签署《蒙特利尔议定书》后,破坏臭氧层物质的排放量下降了 99% 以上)” 可知,解决酸雨和臭氧层空洞的共同关键在于“各国合作”。故选D。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“These successes give us key lessons for climate change.(这些成功为我们应对气候变化提供了关键经验。)”以及最后一段“Yet progress could perhaps be quietly encouraged if we allow the lessons of past successes to guide our next steps.(然而,如果我们让过去成功的经验指导我们的下一步行动,或许就能悄然推动应对气候变化的进展)”可知,应对气候变化的关键是“借鉴过往成功经验”。故选A。
35.推理判断题。全文围绕极端天气、酸雨、臭氧层空洞、气候变化等环境问题展开,分析问题并探讨解决方法,核心主题为环境相关内容。因此可在报纸的“环境”版块读到该文本。故选D。

【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章主要阐述了肢体语言的作用以及如何正确利用肢体语言有效交际。
36.根据前文“We use words to communicate our thoughts, but sometimes our non-verbal language speaks louder than words. Body language includes facial expressions, gestures, and postures.(我们用语言来交流我们的思想,但有时我们的非语言行为比语言更有说服力。肢体语言包括面部表情、手势和姿势)”以及后文“For instance, a warm smile can build trust, while maintaining eye contact shows attentiveness and sincerity.(例如,一个温暖的微笑可以建立信任,而保持目光接触显示关注和真诚)”可知,D项“It is absolutely a powerful tool in our daily communication.(在我们的日常交流中,它绝对是一个强大的工具)”既承接了前文对身体语言的介绍,又为后文的具体例子提供了总起,起到了承上启下的作用。故选D项。
37.根据前文“However, the meanings of body language can vary greatly across different cultures.(然而,在不同的文化中,肢体语言的含义会有很大的不同)”以及后文“A gesture that is polite in one country might be offensive in another. The “thumbs-up” gesture, for example, is a sign of agreement in many places, but it is considered rude in some parts of the Middle East.(一个在一个国家被认为是礼貌的手势在另一个国家可能是无礼的。例如,“竖起大拇指”的手势在许多地方是表示同意的标志,但在中东的一些地区却被认为是粗鲁的)”可知,B项“Therefore, it is crucial to learn about these differences.(因此,了解这些差异是至关重要的)”和上文构成因果关系,自然承接上文的文化差异问题,并引出学习这些差异的必要性。故选B项。
38.根据前文“Being aware of your own body language is the first step to use it effectively. Good posture shows confidence, and leaning slightly forward shows you are engaged in the conversation.(意识到自己的肢体语言是有效使用它的第一步。良好的姿势表现出自信,身体微微前倾表明你在参与谈话)”可知,本段主要讲述如何使用肢体语言,所以A项“Nodding during a conversation is another positive sign.(在谈话中点头是另一个积极的信号)”是对前文内容的另一举例,并引出后文“It shows respect and interest in what the other person is saying.(它显示了你对别人所说的话的尊重和兴趣)”,本句是对空处的解释说明。故选A项。
39.根据前文“Similarly, understanding others’ body language can help you understand their true feelings.(同样,了解他人的肢体语言可以帮助你了解他们的真实感受)”以及后文“If a friend says they are not angry but their jaw is tight and their arms are crossed, you might want to talk to them about what’s really wrong.(如果一个朋友说他们没有生气,但他们的下巴紧绷,双臂交叉,你可能想和他们谈谈到底是怎么回事)”可知,前文强调理解他人身体语言有助于了解真实感受,后文通过具体例子说明言语与身体语言可能不一致。所以F项“It often tells you more about how someone feels than their words do.(它通常比语言更能告诉你一个人的感受)”准确概括了身体语言在揭示真实情感方面的优势,与后文例子呼应。故选F项。
40.根据后文“By paying close attention to non-verbal cues, you can avoid misunderstandings and connect with others on a deeper level.(通过密切关注非语言暗示,你可以避免误解,并在更深层次上与他人建立联系)”可知,此处具体阐述通过注意非语言线索避免误会并促进更深层面的交流,所以C项“Mastering this skill will make you a better communicator.(掌握这个技巧会让你成为一个更好的沟通者)”作为段落主题句,既总结了前文内容,又自然引出后文的具体益处,起到很好的承上启下作用。

a traditional Tang jacket与match之间是被动关系,即“唐装被搭配”,所以用过去分词matched作后置定语,修饰a traditional Tang jacket。故填matched。
57.考查动词时态。句意:几十年来,这位法国人一直致力于学习、教授和推广汉语,使之成为他自身的一部分。根据时间状语“For decades”可知,此处表示从过去持续到现在的动作,可用现在完成时(强调动作对现在的影响或结果)或现在完成进行时(强调动作从过去开始一直持续到现在,并且还可能继续下去)。现在完成时的结构为“have/has +过去分词”,现在完成进行时的结构为“have/has been +现在分词”,主语the Frenchman是第三人称单数,spend的过去分词为spent,现在分词为spending,所以可填has spent或has been spending。故填has spent / has been spending。
58.考查非谓语动词。句意:几十年来,这位法国人一直致力于学习、教授和推广汉语,使之成为他自身的一部分。句中已有谓语动词has spent/has been spending,此处应用非谓语动词。the Frenchman与make之间是主动关系,即“法国人使得汉语成为他自身的一部分”,所以用现在分词making作结果状语,表示自然而然的结果。故填making。
59.考查非限制性定语从句。句意:这一切都始于他对汉字的浓厚兴趣,他最初是在路过一些中餐馆时遇到汉字的。此处为非限制性定语从句,先行词为the characters of the language,指物,在从句中作encountered的宾语,所以用关系代词which引导。故填which。
60.考查固定搭配。句意:1969年,19岁的贝拉萨选择在巴黎第八大学主修中文。“choose to do sth.”是固定搭配,意为“选择做某事”,所以此处填to major。故填to major。
61.考查固定短语。句意:在他看来,汉字甚至具有诗意。“in one's view”是固定短语,意为“在某人看来”,句首首字母大写,所以填In。故填In。
62.考查名词复数。句意:“我喜欢中国古代诗歌和四字成语,”贝拉萨说。idiom是可数名词,根据语境可知,这里指多种四字成语,所以用复数形式idioms。故填idioms。
63.考查冠词。句意:这些汉字本身就有一种迷人的美感。此处表示泛指“一种迷人的美感”,且appealing是以元音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词an。故填an。
64.考查名词。句意:他解释说:“书写汉字就像盖房子——你需要良好的手眼协调能力、出色的空间意识和良好的组织感。”根据形容词excellent可知,此处应填名词,aware的名词形式为awareness,意为“意识”,不可数。故填awareness。
65.考查形容词。句意:这绝对是一种训练大脑和手部的有效方法。此处修饰名词way,应用形容词形式,effect的形容词为effective,意为“有效的”。故填effective。

Dear Wang Lin,
Glad to know you are coming to the USA and have a chance to offer some advice to you.
Firstly, it’s a good idea to bring a present when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always nice, or you may bring a bottle of wine if you know your friends love drinking. Secondly, you should arrive punctually. Thirdly, try to be polite at the dinner table. If you don’t know about choosing the right fork or knife, just watch the others and follow the host. If you like the food, say so. It’s also a good idea to send a thank-you card the day after.
Sure you can enjoy yourself very much in America.
Yours
Rose

67.Mr. Thompson, the English teacher, walked in holding a familiar blue notebook. His eyes sparkled with excitement behind his round glasses as he held it up and announced, “This was found in the library reading room.” Sophia’s heart skipped a beat — it was her journal, filled with months of heartfelt writing. She reached out and took the precious notebook, running her fingers over the slightly worn cover before flipping through the pages of perfectly preserved poems and stories. Each entry transported her back to the moment she had written it. When her eyes met Jessica’s, she quickly looked down, overcome with guilt.
The bell rang, and students streamed out of the classroom. Sophia spotted Jessica already halfway down the hallway, walking faster than usual. Without hesitation, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around her friend. Jessica stiffened for a moment before relaxing into the embrace. “I’m sorry,” Sophia whispered into her shoulder. Jessica pulled back, her eyes glistening, and gave Sophia a light punch on the arm. “Just don’t be so impulsive next time,” she teased. Arm in arm, they stepped into the crisp autumn afternoon, their laughter mingling with the rustling leaves, their friendship restored.
【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述 Sophia和Jessica 自小学起便是挚友。Sophia 有一本承载她私密想法的蓝色笔记本,却突然失踪。Jessica乐观安慰,却因一句玩笑话让 Sophia心生怀疑,友情出现裂痕。
