Food expressions are popular with language learners. They combine two things important to every culture: food and language. Today we are going to talk about potatoes！
Whether you like them boiled, baked or fried – potatoes are what we call a staple (主食). This means they are a kind of basic food that you can build on. You can cover them in butter, salt and pepper or sour cream and herbs. And for people who eat pork, you have not lived until you have eaten a baked potato topped with cheese and bacon!
We have a potato expression to describe a person like that: simple, basic, common. If someone is a “meat-and-potatoes”kind of person, they prefer eating simple meals such as – well, meat and potatoes. They are not interested in complex, expensive food. They are unpretentious.
Men are often described by this expression. When I hear about a “meat-and-potatoes” man, I picture a big, beefy guy. He likes to wear blue jeans and a simple T-shirt. He probably drives a truck and can fix it himself. He is a simple, no-nonsense（务实的）kind of guy.
It is a little less common, but we can also describe a woman as a “meat-and-potatoes”kind of person. This type of woman not only likes to eat steak and hamburgers, she is also a down-to-earth (接地气的) person. She likes simple things and can take care of herself.
People can also be called “small potatoes”. It is a way of saying they are not a danger. If police in a big city do not have enough resources, they probably won't waste manpower on small potatoes, like bicycle thieves. Please note that we may say “small potatoes” for unimportant matters, but we do not say “big potatoes” for important ones. English is funny that way!

If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety.
But , don’t panic. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.
Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases(释放) the hormone adrenaline(肾上腺素), which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel shaky, hot or even sick.
If you worry a lot or are a perfectionist, you are likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may also experience test anxiety.
When you feel a storm(风暴) of anxiety coming on, stop what you’re doing and make your mind a blank. If possible, actually tell yourself to “STOP!” This will get your mind off the stress.
Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence.
Talk to yourself using positive language. Make it a habit to replace each negative thought with a logical(合理的) reason. For example: “I’ve studied hard and I know the material, so I’m ready to do the best I can ."
Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learning opportunities.
Last but not least, start test preparation early – three to five days ahead of the quiz or test. After all, good study habits and skills —for example, time management and note–taking — will give you the feeling that you are in control.

ChatGPT, a smart Al chat-bot tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1 ,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by US company OpenAl, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create a food menu(食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US. Australia and France have banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example,
New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices（设备）, CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat (作弊) on study. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread wrong information.
“It does not build critical-thinking(批判性思维) and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic (学术的) and lifelong success, ” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting（起草）policies（政策）on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, headmaster for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on Al software like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt（调整）our learning, teaching and examinations”.
That way, we can “have integrity (诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool”.
