Dear Ann,
Thank you for your invitation to dinner at your home tomorrow evening. Unfortunately, it is much to my regret that I cannot join you and your family, because I will be fully occupied then for an important exam coming the day after tomorrow. I feel terribly sorry for missing the chance of such a happy get-together, and I hope that all of you enjoy a good time. Is it possible for you and me to have a private meeting afterward If so, please don’t hesitate to call me. I do long for a pleasant chat with you.
Please allow me to say sorry again.
Regards,
Li Hua
The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief This is our stuff." She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief! ” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly sick and isn't able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your stuff, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Despite falling down, he never forgot his promise, handed me $ 15 and kept telling me to deliver it as fast as possible.”
Upon hearing that, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife.“ He is hungry and poor, but he is truly an honest man,”the husband admitted with a trembling voice. At that, the wife was struck dead with shame, heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible man Like a child who made a mistake, she had no courage to look into her husband's eyes. Through all these unexpected things, it eventually dawned on her that honesty has no class and she should respect everyone regardless of their financial and social status.贵阳市南湖实验中学2025-2026第一学期11月

Grand Opening
Bentwood Truck Museum
Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 A. M.
After eighteen months of hard work by more than 100 volunteers, the Bentwood Truck Museum is ready to open. The old factory had been scheduled to be destroyed. When Roger Haygood heard about the plans to tear down the building, he bought it so that he could store his collection of old trucks there. Then he had the idea of turning the building into a truck museum.
During the past year and a half, the old building has been transformed into a treasure chest of memories. Instead of a dark and dull house, the building has become a cheery, bright home for all kinds of trucks from the past. The museum now houses 68 trucks, and we hope to have even more soon. There is a 1959 school bus, a 1942 bakery truck, and a 1937 fire engine. Our oldest vehicle is a 1919 milk truck. Our newest vehicle is a 1966 tow truck.
You can take a ride on a fire truck, a mail truck, or an ice-cream truck. Rides are $ 2.00, but you can get a ticket for a free ride at any grocery store in Bentwood.
Help us celebrate our grand opening by bringing your family and friends! There is something to interest everyone who attends. The Bentwood Truck Museum is a special piece of our history.
● To get to Bentwood Truck Museum, take Route 29 (Kingston Highway) to Palmer Street.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even harder.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达)of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they were not as mad and let it munication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.
24.In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children.
A. more difficult B. much easier
C. less interesting D. more interesting
25.The underlined phrase “ drift apart” in Paragraph 2 means __________.
feel happy B. feel sad
C. become cold to others D. come closer to each other
26.The example in Paragraph 6 shows that ___________.
Sophie is very rude to her friends.
Sophie’s parents are unwilling to listen to her.
Sophie did well in explaining her being late.
D. communication is the solution to misunderstanding.
27.All the following statements are correct(正确的)EXCEPT “_______”.
Communication is a two-way matter.
B. It is better to say “Hi” to others than say nothing.
C. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know.
D. When dealing with parents, you only need to listen to them.

We moved to Elmont in 1956. I was 4 years old. Elmont was a wonderful place to grow up. There were lots of kids, great schools and we had a big yard. My father, Nicholas Denaro, believed that grass was not just to look at, but that children were could play on it. We played games and badminton there. A white fence separated our backyard from a small wood. My friends and I jumped the fence and entered the woods.
My father had the most amazing hand. He could fix anything. He gave those amazing hands to his son, my younger brother, Frank, who also became handy around the house. But my father saved his green fingers(园艺技术) for me. He grew flowers, tomatoes, strawberries and figs(无花果)and he shared his love of gardening with me.
Fourteen years ago, I went to a local nursery and bought a fig tree for Dad for Father’s Day. My mother, Bridget Denaro, called it the best gift I could have given him. He planted it exactly in the middle of the front yard.
He loved that tree and enjoyed delicious figs every year, except just after Sandy hit in 2012. He was so disappointed when cold weather just after the super storm froze (冻坏)all the remaining figs.
In 2015, my father died of aspirating pneumonia (呼吸性肺炎) at 97. We sold our family home of 61 years last year. We left behind Dad’s tree, full of figs waiting to ripen(成熟). We considered taking it with us, but decided that his Father’s Day fig tree belonged to Elmont. The new owner generously allowed me to take some branches so that I could have a precious reminder of my much-loved father and the Elmont home.

A. She grew up in a city. B. She liked climbing trees.
C. She had a happy childhood. D. She was naughty and stubborn(固执).
29.What did Father teach me
A. How to garden well. B. How to play games.
C. How to color fingers. D. How to fix everything.
30.Why did Father fail to enjoy figs in 2012
A. He was ill in hospital. B. The cold hit the fig tree.
C. The tree didn’t bear figs. D. He moved to another city.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To show her love of figs. B. To share her childhood.
C. To remember her father. D. To introduce her experience.
D
I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval(许可,赞许), he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate(专注) better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated(生气), but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate (准确的) when he stood up. Could he be more intent (专心的) while standing up
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits (特点) and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheer leaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously(显然), he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual (个人的) and unique (独一无二的). It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.
32.At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him _____.
A. pay more attention to his study B. keep silent(沉默) in the room
C. finish his homework on time D. get right answers
33. Inspired (启发)by the case of his son, the author began to doubt(怀疑) ________.
A. the importance of parents
B. the old form(形式) of education
C. the relationship between kids and their parents
D. the good grades(成绩) of some kids
34. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right(正确的)
A. We should help kids correct(改正) their wrong ways.
B. Parents should study their kids’ DNA.
C. Kids should be taught to behave(懂规矩) themselves.
D. Parents should love and accept(接纳) their kids.
35. Which of the following would be the best title(标题) of the passage
A. Study Hard and You’ll Be Successful.
B. Be Friendly to Your Children.
C. Children’s Success in Their Own Style(自己的方式).
D. Parents’ Help with Their Children’s Study.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
One of my earliest memories was watching my mom talk on our old phone. I was fascinated(惊讶的) that she could talk to someone who wasn’t actually in the room with her. 36 I was wondering(好奇) how she managed to talk with someone she couldn’t see.
37 Later, we had mobile phones(移动电话) that could be carried around the room. Then came computers and smart phones. These days I can send an e-mail around the world in a second. My daughter’s smart phone has a hundred apps and a dozen social media accounts. She stores all of her information in a mysterious(神秘的) place known as “the cloud”, where she can take it out at any time. It seems that we are more connected in this world than ever before.
38 Few take the time to talk face to face. Instead of looking into the eyes of our loved ones, we stare at our screens. It seems as if the most connected generations are also the loneliest.
Don’t let technology take our time and ruin(毁掉) our life. Make the time to meet, to pray and to communicate with each other. Take a walk on the beach with a friend. Have a long conversation with the phones off and the hearts on. 39
Remember that we are here to love each other, help each other and make this world a better place. 40 . But when it can’t, turn it off.
A. That was a long time ago.
B. Connect offline as well as online.
C. Smart phones have both advantages (优点)and disadvantages(缺点).
D. We should communicate with each other with phones off.
E. When your technology can help to do these things, then use it.
F. However, what bothers(困扰) me is that we rarely associate with each other nowadays(如今).
G. When she left the room, I slowly walked over to the phone and stared (盯)at it for a while.

Delivery(送货记)
There was a rich couple(夫妻) who was going to have a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at a market where everything was expensive. But they didn’t mind(介意)and bought a lot of things.
After getting everything they wanted, they called a porter(挑夫)to carry everything and drop to their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn(破烂) , and he looked as if he wasn't even able to feed himself(吃饱).
They asked the porter about the charge(收费) for delivering the goods to their home(送货到家).The old porter quoted a mere $ 20 , a price well below the market rate (低于市场价)for delivering in his cart.Yet, the couple argued and bargained (讲价)with the porter, and finally he settled for $ 15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal , so he agreed though he was reluctant(勉强).
The couple was very happy thinking about how well they had bargained with the poor porter, paid him $ 15 in advance(提前) and left after giving the porter their address for delivery(送货地址). They reached their home and an hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn't delivered their stuff(物品).

Such a person is not even able to earn enough money to feed himself once a day, and you handed him everything we purchased(购买) for our big party. I am sure that , instead of delivering it to our home , he must have disappeared(跑掉了) with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire(询问) and then go to the police station to file a complaint(投诉) against him”.
