Read the sentences from the reading passage and summarise the grammar rules.
(a) I got on the train to go home.
(b) I went to a quiet area in order to read.
(c) I covered my nose so as to reduce the smell coming from Mr Smelly Food.
Now find more sentences with these structures in the reading passage.
(1) I covered my ears in order to block the noise coming from Rock Girl.
(2) I turned around so as to see the other passengers' faces.
动词不定式作目的状语
设计意图:引导学生观察句子结构,尝试总结动词不定式作目的状语。通过提问的方式引导学生归纳其用法。
① People plant trees to protect the environment.
② We clean the classroom to keep a tidy study environment.
③ To practice speaking, Tom joins the English club.
动词不定式用作目的状语,表示某一动作或状态的目的(做某事是为了什么)。
在作目的状语时,不定式既可以放在句尾,也可以放在句首。
动词不定式作目的状语
人们植树以保护环境。
我们打扫教室以保持整洁的学习环境。
汤姆加入英语俱乐部来练习口语。
① In order to catch the sunrise, we get up at 5 o'clock.
② I check the map so as to find the shortest way to the park.
③ He runs to school so as not to be late.
为了看日出,我们5点就起床。
我查看地图,以便找到去公园的最短路线。
除了直接使用 to do sth 之外,为了使表达更加清楚或对目的加以强调,我们还可以使用 in order to do sth 和 so as to do sth作目的状语。需要注意的是,so as to 引导的不定式短语不能位于句首。
他跑步去学校,以免迟到。
否定形式:“in order not to do /so as not to do”
(注意“to”前加“not”)
动词不定式作目的状语也可以和so that 引导的目的状语从句进行转换。
He gets up early to catch the first bus.
= He gets up early so that he can catch the first bus.
他早起,以便能赶上第一班公交车。
① She was sad to hear the bad news.
② I hurried to the station, only to find the train had left.
③ She is too young to go to school alone.
除了作目的状语之外,根据表达的需要,动词不定式还可以作原因状语和结果状语等。
听到这个坏消息,她很难过。
我匆忙赶到车站,却发现火车已经开走了。
她年纪太小,不能独自上学。
