When two nine-year-olds, Ella Grace Rossen and Cash Daniels, met in July 2019, they quickly became friends. They first met in a summer camp, in the halls of the University of British Columbia.
“We knew we could make a difference together,” says Cash from his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ella, now living in Vero Beach, Florida, agrees, “We became best friends instantly (立即地).” In a short time, their meeting changed into action. The Cleanup Kids came out to make waves in environmental protection.
Ella’s interest in the environment started with an early love for sharks and she tried her best to clean up rubbish on the beaches. For Cash, his dream of protecting the environment started at just seven years old, when a single plastic straw (吸管) on the beach caught his eye, symbolizing a much larger problem. That’s when he knew the danger facing thousands of turtles, seabirds and other wildlife.
Now both 14, they sometimes meet at environmental events. They take part in activities such as setting sea turtles free and summer camps. They both head the organization The Cleanup Kids. It now has many members worldwide.
Ella’s hope is that it’s not hundreds of kids but thousands of kids who can join them, and then they can have a big influence. Members’ work includes doing at least one cleanup a month, recording the collected rubbish, counting every piece to reach the goal of collecting one million pieces of rubbish by the end of a year, and sorting (分类) and recycling things.
In 2022, out of the applicants from across North America, Cash and Ella were chosen to receive the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. This award recognizes (表彰) 25 outstanding young leaders aged 8 to 18, mainly from the USA, who have had a great influence on both people and the environment.
How can you begin to have that influence A “I started with just a couple of cleanups with my family. B Don’t overdo it,” he says. C “And just remember that kids may be only a small part of the population, but we’re 100 per cent of the future. D ”

Now, there are more and more food deliverymen (外卖送餐员) around us. They wear blue, red or yellow clothes and they often drive a motorbike. And most of them are always in a hurry.
Some of them often break traffic (交通) rules. They drive fast on the road and run red lights. Some even make calls when driving. In 2021, the food deliverymen had 176 traffic accidents in Shanghai, according to Xinhua News Agency. That means around every two days, someone gets hurt on the road.
Why are they always in such a hurry and some even put themselves into such danger Many food delivery companies (公司) have many strict rules for them. For example, many companies will fine (罚款) a deliveryman if he can’t deliver an order (订单) on time. Also, many of them wish to take more orders and make more money.
People believe food delivery service companies need to do something. Shanghai asks companies to teach their deliverymen traffic rules. My mother and I were staying in a town near Pompeii. The earth shook those days. That night, I was sleeping when the ground shook very hard. My mother rushed into my room to wake me up. We had to stay outside for the night. My mother was so scared. By six o’clock the next morning, many buildings were still shaking. We decided to leave the town.
The road was crowded. Our coach (长途汽车) couldn’t go straight ahead. It began to move from side to side. The sea moved back suddenly, and many sea animals were left on the sand. We noticed a very dark cloud over Mount Vesuvius (维苏威火山). Soon, the cloud moved down and covered the sea. My mother asked me to continue without her, but I refused to leave her behind. We moved on while the cloud was spreading over the land like a flood. It turned day into night. The air was thick with smoke and ash (灰烬) began to fall in heavy showers. All around us, women were calling, children were crying and men were shouting.
Thankfully, after a while, the daylight returned! Everything was covered in ash, like the snow in winter. After a night of living between hope and fear, we had no thoughts of things to come.

That morning when I opened my eyes, it was eight already. I got up quickly and ran to the bus stop without breakfast. As soon as I got on the bus, it started raining. Suddenly, the bus stopped because it broke down. The driver asked us to wait for another one. “I can’t wait. The school isn’t far. I can run to school,” I thought. Then I began to run, but it started to rain hard. When I reached the classroom, I was all wet. The Maths teacher, Mr. Li, was in the classroom. We were afraid of him and I didn’t like his Maths lessons. I said, “I’m sorry, Mr. Li. I’m late.” “I told you not to be late, but you ...” He suddenly stopped and looked at my wet clothes. Then he took off his jacket and gave it to me. “Now, go to the toilet, take off your wet coat and put this one on,” He said kindly. I came back, wearing Mr. Li’s jacket. If you have a pet, you know how much fun it can be: watching little fish swim in a tank, or seeing a dog catch a ball in its mouth. Kids who like outdoor activities can tell you how exciting it is to see their favorite birds. Animals can be of great fun, but it’s important to know how to avoid (避免) danger when you’re with them.
In the countryside
The rule in the countryside is simple: don’t touch or go near an animal. Although some of these animals may look cool or even cute, leave them alone.
Don’t ever try to feed a wild animal. It’s OK to feed birds, but you shouldn’t feed other animals even if they look very hungry. When it comes to these animals, it’s better to check them out at the zoo, on the Internet, on TV nature shows, or in books.
Playing safely with pets
Pets can’t tell you if they’re upset or scared, so they show you. They might do this by biting or scratching (抓). To avoid bites and scratches, you should do as follows:
Never touch a pet when it’s eating or sleeping.
Never try to get near a pet with its babies. Animal mothers are very protective and will bite to keep you away.
When pulling a lizard (蜥蜴) or a snake from the tank, do it slowly and carefully. Then wash your hands right away because such animals can carry bacteria (细菌) on their skin.

Mark: We saw the news about the bushfires. Are they close to you
Jim: Yes. They are very close. The weather is hot and windy. The conditions are ideal for bushfires and once they get started they spread quickly. Yesterday the temperatures hit 44°C and there were reports of over 50 fires in the area. It will take days to put them out.
Mark: Have you seen any fires

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈) and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast.
The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rain are.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed around 6,000 people in Philippines. More people were injured(受伤) and some others were missing. What should we do when a typhoon hits
·Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.
·Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!
·Listen to the radio or TV for important information.
·If you’re told to go to a safer place, do it right away.

First, drop to the floor.
Second, cover yourself with your arms under strong furniture*.
Third, hold on to something strong. Stay away from windows or things that could fall. When you stay outside, find an open place to stay.
Last but not the least, have an adult turn off the gas and water after the earthquake. Pipes crack* and let out harmful gases. Broken pipes can also make water unsafe to drink.

Many earthquakes happen every year. Some of these earthquakes are very strong. When they happen in cities, they can be very serious. Many people will be hurt or die in the earthquakes. Knowing some ways to protect yourself will help to keep you safe in the earthquakes.
If you are indoors when the earthquake happens, the safest place is under a strong table or desk. Sitting on the floor in a doorway or close to a wall is safer than standing in the middle of a room. Remember to protect your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, tall furniture and pictures or anything that may fall on you. Do not try to run out of the building.
If you are out of doors, move to clear areas. Get away from buildings and trees. Be very careful of fallen power lines.

Pictures are falling off the wall. Lights are waving. The bed is shaking. Everything is moving. What’s going on It’s an earthquake.
Earthquakes are horrible disasters (灾难) and some of them are destructive (毁灭性的). The top layer of the Earth is made up of huge pieces of rock. They move past each other all the time along fault lines (裂纹线). But sometimes two pieces get stuck together. When they finally move away from each other, they move suddenly. And this makes the land above them shake. This is the most common cause of earthquakes.
During a small earthquake, you will feel a little shaking. But during a strong one, you will be thrown about. A strong earthquake is very horrible. Cracks will appear on the ground and windows and doors will break. Buildings will even fall down. So watch out! If an earthquake happens at sea, it can make big waves called “tsunamis” (海啸). When these waves reach land, they can destroy villages.
Earthquakes are measured (测量) on a scale (等级) of 0—9. It is called the Richter scale. A size 9 earthquake is the strongest and most dangerous. Since 1900, more than two million people have died in earthquakes. In 1976, a size 7.8 earthquake hit Tangshan, China. It killed more than 240,000 people.

A strong earthquake (地震) hit central Myanmar (缅甸) on March 28, 2025, at 2:20 p.m. (Beijing Time). The earthquake was 7.9 in magnitude (震级) and happened 30 kilometers underground. The center of the earthquake was near Sagaing Region, close to China’s border.
The earthquake caused serious problems. In Myanmar, 144 people died and 732 were hurt. Many buildings in Mandalay and Naypyidaw fell down. Important places like the Sagaing Bridge and Mandalay Airport were destroyed. In Thailand, a tall building in Bangkok collapsed (倒塌), killing three people. In China’s Yunnan Province, two people were slightly hurt.
Rescue (营救) work was difficult because roads were broken. China sent a medical team with drones (无人机) to help. The United Nations promised $5 million for aid. Scientists say Myanmar is on the Sagaing Fault, where two big earth plates meet. This area often has strong earthquakes.
“I told my students two things. First, we should protect ourselves, because it is not a game. Second, we should get ready for everything in time,” said Adelina, a teacher of the middle school. Although all the buildings in the school fell down, everyone was safe. Because both the students and the teachers had learned some life-saving skills, they quickly ran out of the buildings.

It’s normal to meet with a rainstorm on summer afternoons. Rainstorms are very dangerous for people and they can even kill people. So how can we stay safe during a rainstorm
Before a rainstorm
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind becomes strong, it means a dangerous rainstorm might be coming. If there is lightning, don’t wait for rain. Act right away. At the first flash of lightning, quickly get into a building.
During a rainstorm
When you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors or windows. Rain and wind can blow in or even break them. Do not use anything that runs on electricity (电), either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. You can’t use the phone. Lightning can travel through the phone line and hit you. If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. The lightning could hit the tree and travel through the tree to hit you. Try to find a low place to stay in.
After a rainstorm
You should also be careful after the rainstorm stops. There is always too much water on the roads, so you should never drive or walk through a flooded road. You should watch your pets closely. Keep them indoors if possible.

Floods (洪水) often happen after or during heavy rain. Too much water can cause damage (损害) to homes and roads and can even wash cars away. More importantly, floods can be very dangerous to people’s lives as well.
If a flood happens suddenly without getting prepared, people may have no way to run. The weather report helps people prepare for heavy rain and floods. People try to protect their things by putting sandbags in front of their doors to stop water from coming into their homes. Floods are more likely to come to lower places, so people living in lower areas or near rivers are more likely to be in danger. If the heavy rain is reported early, the people in these areas will be saved before the floods arrive.
Some scientists say that because of global warming (全球变暖), more places may have heavy rain and floods. Because it’s difficult to stop the floods, scientists spend time on ways of finding them earlier so that people can run away quickly.
Floods can happen quickly in many parts of the world. We need to prepare earlier and act quickly before they begin. Stay away from water and get to higher ground during the floods. Finally, go back home carefully. There could be something dangerous in the dirty water that washes into your home. Clean your home as soon as possible after the flood is gone.
79.When do floods often happen
80.How do people try to protect their homes from floods
81.What will happen if the heavy rain is reported early

There are some things in nature that we cannot stop from happening. A flood comes when there is too much water on the land. Sometimes, it is after a big storm when too much rain falls on the land. The fast flood water can hurt us and destroy our home. We cannot stop a flood from coming, but we can try to stop the water from coming into our homes. We can try to stop the water by making a wall. We can use sandbags to make the wall.
An earthquake comes when the land moves. The land goes up and down and even cracks (断裂). We can get hurt by things that fall down in an earthquake. We cannot stop an earthquake from coming, but we can try to make our homes strong so that they do not fall down in an earthquake.
A tornado (龙卷风) is the fast air that goes around and around over the land. A tornado can pick up anything. It can break anything that is on the way. A hurricane (飓风) is a big storm with fast strong winds and heavy rains. It begins on the sea and can come onto the land. Its fast winds can hurt us and destroy our homes. We cannot stop a tornado or a hurricane from coming, but we can get out of its way.
We cannot stop the power of nature, but we can go to places where we can be safe.

I’m David. I lived on the first floor of an apartment building. One day, I was having dinner at home. Suddenly, I heard a terrible sound and felt the chair shaking! At that time, I thought to myself. “It is an earthquake (地震).”
I was so scared that I started shaking. I got up from the chair and left the house quickly. I saw Chloe, my neighbor, outside the building, too. I told her I was too scared to go back into the house because I was afraid that it would start shaking again. Chloe and I decided to go straight to the park to find a safe place to sit. There were so many people. We spent all night there. We stayed in the same park for the next few days because there were still small earthquakes from time to time.
When we were sure it was safe, we went back to our apartment building. We were worried because hundreds of houses in our neighborhood were badly damaged. When I went into my house, I saw that the windows were broken.
