What can trees tell us about climate change Quite a lot!
Trees can keep a record of Earth’s climate for a very long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of years!
If you see a stump (树桩), you may find many rings on its top. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.
First year growth
The light-colored rings are wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings are wood that grew in the late summer and autumn. One light ring and one dark ring make one year of the tree’s life.
Dry and rainy season Tree rings usually grow wider (更宽的) in warm, wet years and are thinner in years when it is cold and dry. If the tree has experienced hard times, such as a drought (干旱), the tree might hardly grow at all in those years.
Scar (疤痕) from forest fire
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 years to 150 years. However, the tree rings can keep for hundreds to thousands of years. They help us understand how the earth’s climate has changed over time.

Laura saw a red light on the horizon (地平线). It came through the wooden house’s window cracks (裂缝). She dropped her dish towel (擦碗巾), put her face to the window, and looked hard at the foggy grassland.
The wind—soft all week—now brought light smoke, strong and dry. Pa was outside by the fence (围栏), fixing a broken rail with his small axe (斧头). He stopped and looked west. “That’s a fire on the grassland,” he said softly. “It’s miles away, but if wind changes...” He quickly threw the axe on the wood pile and hurried home.

Laura sat close with her sisters on cold dirt (泥土). Above, Pa’s boots thundered as he shouted, “Free the horses! Make a firebreak (防火带)—clear grass to dirt! It’s our only chance!” Then the door closed.
Minutes felt like hours. The cellar air got hot. Laura crawled (爬) to the small window—big fire as tall as the wooden house. Her breath was caught in her throat and her fingers shook (颤抖) so hard. After a short while, the grass caught fire, sparks (火花) flying. Glass cracked like a spider’s web. Mary held Carrie closely, singing softly; Carrie cried.
Just as fire touched the door, wind blew hard and turned—The fire moved from their house. Laura saw Pa by the lake, shirt black with ash (烟灰).
Ma smiled, “Safe now.” The kids climbed up happily—grassland black, smoking, ash falling like snow. The house stood, a little burnt but still there; Pa sighed, and hugged Ma, “It doesn’t matter. The house is broken, but I’m sure we’ll make it as comfortable as it was—we have each other—that’s all that matters.”

①Yang Zhenning (Chen-Ning Yang), one of the 20th century’s greatest physicists, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103. Born into a scholarly (学术的) family, he loved science as a child. He later went for further studies at the University of Chicago in the US.
