剧本是戏剧艺术创作的文本基础，编导与演员以剧本为基础进行排演。一个较长的剧本一般由许多不同的段落组成。在西方的戏剧中，通常使用“幕”（act）作为大的单位，在“幕”之下再分成小的“场”（scene）。剧本主要由人物对话和舞台提示组成。舞台提示是以剧作者的口气写的叙述性的文字说明。

Algernon: Did you hear what I was playing, Lane
Lane: I didn't think it polite to listen, sir.
Algernon: I'm sorry for that. I don't play well—anyone can play well—but I play with wonderful feelings.
