Every morning at 5:30 am, a quiet movement unfolds on a Kerala riverbank. Led by one man, Saji
Valuvassery, this floating classroom is teaching people to swim — for free. More than a skill, it's a
lifeline, a community spirit, and a powerful reminder that courage can be contagious (具有感染力的).
On a quiet February morning in 2009, a school picnic to the scenic spot near the Periyar River
turned into a disaster. A boat canying 15 kids and their teacher overturned in the river, leaving no
survivors. The disaster shook Saji Valuvassery, a shop owner. Haunted (困扰)by the thought of the
young lives lost, he began offering swimming classes in the very river that had taken them, for free.
Little did he know that this simple gesture would turn the banks of the Periyar River into a place
filled with laughter and community warmth.
Saji began by teaching his own kids to swim, then their friends, and then a few kids from
around the neighbourhood. Word spread. More kids came. Then adults. Today, that small effort has
become the ""Valasseril River Swimming Club”. Over 10,000 people have learned to swim here, and
2,000 children have been trained to swim across 780 metres of the river — all in one go.
The swimming classes have also grown into a space for sharing knowledge and stories, where
everyone who learns is encouraged to give back, keeping the spirit of community flowing as
constantly as the river itself “Once anyone passes their advanced swimming level, they are required
to do 6 days of free service, to ensure others' safety,^ explains Saji.
The Valasseril River Swimming Club teaches people from November to May. It pauses (暂停)
during the monsoon season (季风季节)and reopens in November, when the river is calm and safe
again. Every November, when it restarts, volunteers return voluntarily, led by their shared sense of
purpose. When asked what keeps people coming back, Saji simply says, “People go to places where
they find happiness 3

The City of Richmond Hill, north of Toronto, Ontario, does not have a local history museum
and, as a result, lacks the same rich heritage experiences that many smaller communities enjoy.
Penetanguishene, a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, on the other hand, has become a successful
small town because it has a clear sense of the importance of its past And the Penetanguishene
Centennial Museum has become a center fbr many of the events that bring the town's 8,500 residents
together.
Most Canadians are aware of the role of larger professional museums in preserving our national
heritage. What is exhibited in them, however, often seems distant from our lives. But in small towns,
local museums hold the memory not of our nation, but of our towns. They preserve the personal
history of the residents, many of whom gifted the unique items that are on exhibit.
While financial support from the government helps to get special exhibits, there are other
groups that make small-town museums successful across Ontario. A huge contribution is always
made by local families. In our case, the C. Beck Manufacturing Company operating from 1875 to
1969, had a significant impact on the history of the town. The Beck family and company played a
central role in preserving Penetanguishene unique history by gifting their former general store and
office as our town's first museum.
Besides, since 1991, the “Friends of the Museum",a volunteer organization, has raised
hundreds of thousands of dollars fbr our museum and helped run community events every year. By
supporting small-town museums as volunteers, people help to preserve and promote the past in a
more personal way. It is this personal touch that makes the museum a gathering place in the town,
and a symbol of its unique history. And the various exhibitions and concerts hosted by the museum
have constantly breathed new life into our town.
28. What accounts fbr Richmond Hill's lack of heritage experiences
A. The absence of a local history museum.
B. The govemmenfs insufficient support.
C. The overly rapid expansion of the city.
D. The city's poor protection of old objects.
29. What is the difference between small local museums and big ones
A. Who they are for. B. How they tell history.
C. How many items they hold. D. How exhibits relate to people's lives.
30. Why is the C. Beck Manufacturing Company mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To explain the birth of small-town museums.
B. To call fbr public recognition of its contributions.
C. To show local museums can help preserve history.
D. To emphasize local families5 role in small-town museums.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The impact of personal touch. B. Significance of volunteers, support.
C. Activities hosted by the local museum. D. Funds donated for running the museum.

Bananas grow best in full sun. To protect their skins from harmful UV rays, their peels (果皮)
produce a natural sunscreen (防晒霜).Taylor Maguire, a student in New York, has uncovered the
secrets behind this natural protection.
Sunscreens protect our skin against harmful solar rays. However, Taylor notes some of their
chemicals may cause cancer. When these chemicals wash off into the environment, they can harm
wildlife - for instance, certain mineral-based sunscreens weaken freshwater animals9 swimming
ability. In high enough concentrations, she adds, they can even kill some organisms. This led Taylor
to search for alternatives to mineral-based sunscreens.
Believing that bananas had their own natural UV protection, Taylor processed banana peels by
heating, freezing, and mixing them to get two extracts. The first was a water-based extract,
containing only components that can dissolve (溶解)in water. The second was a nonpolar extract,
made up of components that can't dissolve in water. Using a spectrophotometer - a device that
measures how much light a liquid takes in - Taylor confirmed that both extracts took in UV light.
Next, Taylor put planarians, a type of flatworm (扁形虫)living in water, into different dishes
containing different solutions and put them under strong UV light for 10 minutes. If the worm's
movement slowed or stopped, she took that to mean the light damaged them. Her five test solutions
included her two extracts, a drugstore sunscreen solution, plain water and glycerol (甘油).
The result The nonpolar banana extract, the glycerol and the mineral-based sunscreen appeared
deadly to the worms, she found. But planarians survived just fine in the water-based extract.
The next step is to figure out exactly what chemical provided the water-based extract's UV
protection. Recognizing that, she says, could allow for a new kind of eco-friendly banana-based
sunscreen.
32. What inspired Taylor to seek alternatives to mineral-based sunscreens
A. Her skin's response to mineral-based sunscreens.
B. The natural sunscreen qualities of banana peels.
C. Her goal to develop a more affordable sunscreen.
D. The ecological and health impacts of mineral-based sunscreens.
33. Why did Taylor use planarians in her experiment
A. To compare the effectiveness of different UV protection solutions.
B. To measure the uptake ofUV by banana extracts.
C. To study the behavior of animals living in water.
D. To test the pollution caused by banana extracts.
34. What can be concluded about Taylor's water-based extract
A. It is harmful to planarians.
B. It is more lasting than other solutions.
C. It is less efiective than the nonpolar extract.
D. It is a potentially safe alternative for UV protection.
35. What is the next step Taylor plans to take in her research
A. Ib test the extracts on other types of animals.
B. To find out the chemical blocking UV
C. To test banana-based sunscreen on human skin.
D Tb create a new type of mineral-based sunscreen.

Life is full of challenges. Sometimes, things don't go the way you want, and it's easy to feel

up and believe in you, it becomes easier to stay hopeful. But if your social circle is full of negativity,
it can pull you back.
Take care of your physical health. Staying positive isn't just about the mind; it's also about
taking care of your body. Physical health directly affects how you feel emotionally. When you

Lila grew up with her grandmother in the countryside. Her favorite moments were singing
traditional folk songs while working with the villagers. Her clear, pleasant voice lifted everyone's
spirits, making even the hardest work feel lighter/'Your voice is a gift, Lila J her grandmother said.
“It carries the soul of our village. Never stop singing.”
However, life changed when Lila's family moved to the city for better opportunities. The tall
buildings, busy streets, and unfamiliar faces overwhelmed her. At school, her classmates teased her
for her rural accent, calling her “the farm girl”. Embarrassed and hurt, Lila became withdrawn. She
stopped singing; she was afraid her voice would invite more ridicule (嘲笑).
One afternoon, after a particularly unkind comment from a classmate, Lila ran to a nearby park.
The beautiful lake and trees reminded her of home. Sitting by the lake, she thought of her
grandmother and the songs they used to sing. Hesitantly, she began singing one of her favorite folk
tunes. Her voice started low but grew louder, filling the park with its beauty and emotion.
When she finished, she heard clapping. Turning around, she saw a kind woman smiling warmly.
'It was beautifiil,“ the woman said. "Your voice has so much depth and emotion. Where did you
learn to sing like that ” Lila replied with a flushed (脸红的)fhce, "It's just a song from my village.”

together, their voices mixing harmoniously. Later, Lila learned that the woman was a music

Inspired by the professor’s words, Lila started practicing every day, determined to improve her
singing skills. She spent every spare moment listening to recordings of great singers, mimicking
their pronunciation and mastering breathing techniques. Her grandmother’s advice, “Never stop
singing,” echoed in her mind, driving her forward. Gradually, her voice became more stable. She no
longer felt ashamed of her rural accent but embraced it as part of her unique charm. One day, during

day.
M: My phone says it will get windy soon, and there will be rain tonight.

Text 4
M: Is this your first visit to Austria
W: No, this is my second visit. I first came to Austria in June 1999. This time I arrived in March, and
I’ll stay until October.
Text 5
M: I’ve just watched an old movie named Roman Holiday.
W: What’s it about
M: It describes a princess’s journey in Rome.
Text 6
W: Excuse me, sir.
M: Yes, may I help you
W: I’d like to cash a check and then deposit the other checks.
M: Well, do you have an account with us
W: No. Actually I’d like to open an account right now.
M: What kind of account would you like to open
W: A checking account.
M: Well, please go to Window 3 first. Tell the clerk at Window 3 that you want to open a checking
account. He’ll give you some forms. Fill them out and come back to Window 5. I’ll tell you what
to do next.
W: Thank you.
Text 7
M: Hi, Abby. How was your summer vacation
W: I worked at a restaurant the whole vacation. It was an exciting experience, and I also made
enough money for the next term. What did you do for your summer vacation
M: I attended some classes because I fell behind last term. I wanted to catch up with the others.
W: That’s great. So, have you seen David
M: He would start over in another place with a new school.
W: Really Why I haven't seen him for several months.
M: The company wanted his father to manage an office in another city. So his family decided to
move house.
W: Well, we might as well have a video chat with him this evening.
Text 8
M: My friend Jeffery has invited me to his wedding, and I have no idea what to get him.
W: Have you spoken to the groom or any of his friends about what he wants
M: No. I thought it might not be polite to ask. But he did give me a website address I could go to if I
had any questions. Here it is.
W: OK, I see. He has a wedding register. It is basically a list of things he wants.
M: That’s convenient. It looks like Erica and John have got him the wine glass set. $200! I don't
have that much money!
W: They are probably really good friends, and there are two of them. $50 is a good amount to
spend for the regular guest,or $100 for two people.
M: Let’s see. Dan and Wendy got him the glass bowls, and Shannon and Dave got him plates. There
is an electric frying-pan here, but it’s $90. Just too expensive for me.

W: Don’t worry! I could go with you.
M: Problem solved!
Text 9
W: Would you be able to help me
M: Of course. What can I do for you
W: There’s something wrong with my car. Almost every time I stop at a red light or stop sign, the
engine dies. Then I have to spend more time starting it again than usual.
M: So where is your car Did you leave it out at night
W: No. I put it away in the garage as soon as I got home from work. But today I left it in my
backyard.
M: Well, it’s hard to tell. But I must say it’s only a matter of time before your car stops working if
you don’t take care of the problem.
W: Oh gosh. I have to admit I really don’t know anything about cars — I get in,turn the key on,
turn the radio on and just go.
M: Well, I suppose you'd better send it to a repair shop. The mechanic will give the car a thorough
going-over.
W: That’s okay. Oh my, how can I go to work without a car
M: Well, don’t worry. It’s no sweat for me to drive you to work. We’re going in the same direction.
W: You're the best neighbor, Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Text 10
W: Now I’ve got an announcement about the company party. First, you should dress properly
because it’s a formal event. Also, a couple of changes were made to the party. So please pay full
attention to what I'm saying next. Well, the party is now taking place at the Hilton Hotel instead
of the Conard Hotel because the Conard Hotel is in an inconvenient location for many of you.
Tickets for the special show are going on sale tomorrow at the Hilton Hotel and guess how much
they cost. 40 dollars That’s what we originally decided at the Conard Hotel. Now that We’ve
moved to the Hilton, we can reduce the price of the tickets by 5 dollars per ticket. Of course,if
you want to give me the five dollars, I won’t complain. Anyway, some extra important
information. We start at 7 p. m. with wines. The ticket says clearly that we must finish at 1 a. m.
That would be true if we were at the Conard Hotel! But the Hilton has requested that we finish
by 12:00, so it'll be over by midnight. Oh, one last thing. Is our boss here No Good.He is
leaving the company. No. Only a joke! I couldn’t imagine the place without him. It’s his birthday
on the day of the party. Don’t forget we'll be getting a cake for him. He’s saying goodbye to his
thirties, so it’s the big “four-oh” for him…
