A boat floated peacefully on the crystal-blue water. “How fascinating!” Antonio told to his friends, who shared a passion for diving. In the following diving, unfortunately, he was trapped with his friend, who shared the oxygen with Antonio but died afterwards. Antonio breathed hard on his mouthpiece, but there was nothing left. He started to scream and kept screaming until he had no voice. As hours passed and Antonio failed to surface, his other friends rushed for help.
Shortly the local divers came to rescue, but in vain.Years of experience told them, lost in the cave, one must be dead. They considered going back in but decided against it because of the incoming dark, the muddy water and the lack of help. Too risky.
Asked for help, Peter, a chief frogman, began to plan the next morning’s operations, knowing hurried preparation was deadly. He had narrow escapes from death. Each time, though, training and a cool head saved him. Suddenly, a thought struck him. “Who said he died That guy may be alive!” The next morning, Peter was suited up. Before a dive, he prayed.
Antonio “dreamed” he was drowning. He forced himself awake but couldn’t feel his body. He was too tired to feel scared. Entering the cave, Peter found Antonio. On touching him, a hand closed around his left wrist. Peter knew the young man must be kept from panicking. Gently he passed his mouthpiece to Antonio. He heard Antonio take a couple of breaths before handing the mouthpiece back. Antonio was trying to share oxygen with him,Peter realized. How unbelievable was that, after 17 hours in this hole, his mind still stayed cool!
Antonio was treated in the nearest hospital. Doctors said he wouldn’t have survived more than another hour in the cave. When Peter finally climbed back into his car, he doubled up, sobbing. He felt he took part in a miracle. Somehow an unseen hand that had guided Antonio to a tiny air pocket in the cave guided him there too. Where he should have found death, he had met life.

Football star Jason Brown retired abruptly from the NFL(美国国家橄榄球大联盟) in 2012 in order to deal with something bigger than anything he’d faced on a football field:sweet potatoes.
Brown, then 29, moved with his wife, Tay, and their children from Missouri, where he’d played with the St. Louis Rams, back home to North Carolina, where he bought 1,000 acres in Louisburg. Overnight, he went from a football star to a family farmer. “For most people, it doesn’t make sense—why would you leave an awesome NFL career ” he says.
But Brown wasn’t going to become just any farmer. He would give away nearly everything he grew. “I didn’t feel I was just supposed to use my millions to buy food and donate it. I had to be out there doing the work and leading the way,” he says.
This radical step came to him one day when he was struck by a feeling that he had a purpose beyond sports. “Farming chose me; it was my calling in life,” he says.
Only one problem: Jason didn’t know the first thing about farming. So he did what all beginners do today—watched videos on the Internet. Then he partnered with another local farm that helped him plant fields of sweet potatoes. He named his land First Fruits Farm.
In the early fall of 2014, the first harvest was ready. Fifty pickup trucks arrived at the farm and loaded up 120,000 pounds to distribute locally. In 2015, First Fruits Farm expanded its sweet potato donations to food banks across eastern North Carolina.
Jason uses his unusual story to show local youth what it takes to grow food from start to finish. “They get that food doesn’t just magically appear in the grocery store or restaurants,” he says.
28.What did most people think of Brown’s decision to retire from the NFL
A.They weren’t satisfied with it.
B.They worried about it.
C.They couldn’t understand it.
D.They disapproved of it.
29.What does the underlined word “radical” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Easy. B.Great. C.Slow. D.Careful.
30.How did Brown learn to grow food
A.From the Internet.
B.From books.
C.By practicing on a local farm.
D.By attending beginner training classes.
31.Which of the following can best describe Brown
A.Proud and determined.
B.Brave and generous.
C.Ambitious and sensitive.
D.Considerate and optimistic.

They’re orange, they’re robots and they’re capable of sailing the high seas without human intervention.
On Tuesday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched a pair of Saildrones (海洋无人机) in Pacific Northwest waters for the first time. Their summer long sailing journey will stretch from Vancouver Island to California. The Saildrone operators will collect data to help set future fishing seasons. The government wants to see whether seagoing robots can extend fishery surveys now performed by expensive manned ships.
Nora Cohen from NOAA said, “The 23-foot-long seagoing robots can follow a remotely programmed course for up to a year at a time. And they don’t require any fuel. We use wind and solar power to drive the sensors.” He added, “It means that we’re able to go to places where we don’t really want to send people, and go into weather that we really don’t want anyone ever to be in, and be able to send measurements back.”
The primary mission is to investigate the species and the number of fish in existence and the places where they are. Larry Hufnagle, scientist of NOAA Fisheries in Seattle, said a traditional big NOAA research ship-based survey costs around $25,000 per day. By comparison, one Saildrone costs $2,500 per day.
“It could be a significant saving,” Hufnagle said. “But like anything else, there is a trade-off in what you get and what you don’t get. On the manned ship, we have limited time. It takes a lot of people. We spend a fair amount of money. But there is one thing the Saildrone can’t do but humans can:cast a net to catch and positively identify the fish detected below. The Saildrones are going to give us additional data, not replacement data.”
Nora Cohen said Saildrone, a venture capital-backed company based in Alameda, California, expects to launch a total of 11 of its seagoing robots to survey different water bodies for NOAA this year. The Bering and Arctic seas,Coastal California and the Gulf of Mexico will be the locations of additional missions.
32.What is the purpose of collecting fish data
A.To explore the ocean. B.To learn the habits of fish.
C.To assist fishing industry. D.To improve fishing skills.
33.What is mainly discussed about the Saildrone in Paragraph 3
A.Its appearance. B.Its advantages.
C.Its power systems. D.Its primary mission.
34.What does the underlined word “trade-off” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Debate. B.Reason. C.Balance. D.Reality.
35.What can be inferred from the text
A.The Saildrone has a promising future. B.Hufnagle thinks little of the Saildrone.
C.Manned ships will be completely replaced. D.Production of seagoing robots is restricted.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. 36 Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!
According to the psychologist David Cohen, there are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never-ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don’t have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand. 37 Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structured and organized manner. 38 . They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.
Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the “Zeigarnik Effect”. This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task. 39
In conclusion, the to-do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. 40 It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.
A.Finally, lists give us the psychological boost as well.
B.Instead, we can check our lists to remind us of what’s next.
C.This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.
D.Nevertheless, making a to-do list is not always a straightforward process.
E.However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to-do list.
F.The next time you feel overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.
G.This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.

Emma was born a runner. Despite her natural talent, Emma had never competed in official races due to her shyness and fear of failure. However, everything changed when she learned about the annual “Race Against the Tide,” a tiring marathon along the coast that attracted participants from far and wide.
Emma’s heart raced with excitement at the thought of participating. She imagined herself crossing the finish line, not just as a participant, but as a winner, proving to herself and others that she could overcome her fears.
But she was still hesitant. However, her father noticed that. After he figured out what was going on, he persuaded Emma to join in and stick to her dream.
Then came Emma’ s training for the marathon.
Emma’s training days were tough. When the cold early in the morning made her shiver (颤抖), her father was there, saying, “Keep pushing; you’re doing great.” As the long-distance running left her exhausted, he’d remind her, “You’re building strength with every step.” When she faced moments of doubt, her father would cheer her on. His encouragement was all the motivation Emma needed to keep going, day after day.
As the race day arrived, Emma found herself standing at the starting line, surrounded by a sea of determined faces. The air was thick with anticipation, and her heart pounded in her chest like a drum. She was so nervous and uncertain about her choice. But then she saw her father smiling and waving to her from the crowd. With a deep breath, Emma pushed aside her fears and focused on the task ahead. As the gunshot signaled the beginning of the race, she took off like an arrow. The first few miles were smooth sailing, but soon enough, the real test began. Hills grew steeper (陡的), the sun burned brightly overhead, and her energy began to run out.

Halfway through the race, something unfortunate happened. Suddenly Emma fell down on a rocky path, ankle pain shooting through her body like lightning. Tears welled up in her eyes as she considered giving up the race. That’s when she remembered why she started this journey — not just to win, but to conquer her fears and prove to herself that she could do it. And her father’s smile also emerged in her mind. With renewed determination, she gathered herself, stood up, and continued running, though at a slower pace.
Every step was a battle against her ankle pain, but Emma refused to give in. She could hear the cheers of the crowd growing louder and feel the vibrations of excitement under her feet. With each step, she left behind not just the distance, but also her doubts and fears. Finally, she crossed the finish line with a roar of applause and cheers. Her father was so excited that he took her in his arms to congratulate her. Though she didn’t win first place, finishing the race was a victory in itself, for she had conquered her fears and proved herself.

答案E 根据前文“Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities.(对我们很多人来说,提高效率是一件很困难的事情。收件箱里满是邮件、家务、社会责任,这些都很容易让人感到不安)”提到提高效率是一件很困难的事情,和后文“Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!(把它写下来,完成任务并划掉它们!)”可知,此处是指写下待办事项可以提高办事效率,所以E选项“However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to-do list.(然而,有一个简单的工具可以帮助我们掌握一切,那就是待办事项清单)”起到上下文的承上启下作用,切合文意。故选E。
答案C 根据前文“Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never-ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don’t have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand.(首先,它们有助于消除永无止境的任务带来的混乱和焦虑。通过把所有的事情都写下来,我们不必依赖我们的记忆,而是可以专注于手头的任务)”可知,此处是指待办事项清单可以帮助我们理清混乱并减少焦虑,C选项“This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.(这不仅能帮助我们保持条理,还能减少精神压力)”承接上文内容,上下文紧密连接。故选C。

Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.(它们是我们取得成就的证明,有助于提高我们的成就感和动力。 故选A。
39. 答案G 根据前文“Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the “Zeigarnik Effect”. This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task.(我们的大脑喜欢清单的另一个可能的原因是所谓的“蔡加尼克效应”。心理学家用这个词来形容我们对需要做的事情、未完成的任务的记忆比已经完成的事情更好。维克森林大学的研究人员测试了蔡格尼克效应对一组人的干扰。研究人员得出结论,允许做计划的那组人减少了焦虑,在下一个任务中表现得更好)”介绍“蔡加尼克效应”(对未完成任务的记忆更深刻)及研究结论(制定计划的小组焦虑减少、表现更好)。G选项“This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.(这一发现强调了完成任务并从清单上划掉它们的重要性)”总结研究意义,与“划掉完成项”的清单使用方式呼应。故选G。
40. 答案F 根据前文“In conclusion, the to-do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives.(总之,待办事项清单是管理我们日常生活的宝贵工具)”总结待办清单是管理日常生活的宝贵工具,F选项“The next time you feel overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.(下次感到不知所措时,拿起纸和笔,开始列清单吧)”以具体行动建议结尾,与后文“It just might be the key...(这或许是发挥潜能的关键……)”衔接自然,强化清单的实用性。故选F。

Text 10
M: There are many different types of writing, such as essays, letters and speeches. Whatever your reason is and whatever your style is, there are some tips that will help you improve your writing. Firstly, be clear about your purpose. The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing. Whatever you write, keep your purpose in mind at all times to avoid going off topic. Secondly, start with an outline. Far too often people write without an outline. Whatever you are writing, creating a clear outline is the first step to getting your message across quickly and in the most effective way. Thirdly, write for readers, not for yourself. Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write. Constantly ask yourself who you really write the information for. Lastly, write for the ear, not for the eye. Once you’ve finished a draft of your writing, read it out loud. You’ll hear something that sounds awkward.2025-2026学年高二上学期期中测试
