在英语语流中，说话者一般会遵循省力原则，弱读不太重要的功能词，给听者的印象是某些词一带而过，甚至含混不清。实际上，这种听觉上的模糊读音有规律可循。了解弱读的一些基本规律，一方面有助于我们准确理解语流中的弱读音，另一方面在自己表达时也能尽量做到强弱得当。
英语弱读(Reduction)主要针对功能词（如冠词 a/an、介词 for、助动词 do/have 等），实词（名词、动词、形容词等）通常重读，不弱读；
弱读时，功能词的元音常简化为 / /（如 a→/ /、of→/ v/）或 / /（如 is→/ z/、did→/d d/）；
部分常用搭配会进一步简化发音，如 want to→wanna、going to→gonna，让表达更自然省力；
弱读多在口语对话中使用，目的是让语流更流畅，正式书面语或强调语义时较少弱读。
