Do you know Black Friday It is the day following Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November) in the United
States. People think it means the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most stores and shopping malls
open very early. Things will be on great sale for people to buy.
Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states(州)in the USA think it as a holiday just for some
people who don’t work in shops like officers, teachers and students. They can have holidays both on Thanksgiving and on
the following Friday. In this way, they make it a four-day weekend, so more people can go shopping during these days. It is
the busiest shopping day of the whole year in America, like the Double Eleventh Day in China.
Black Friday first appeared in Philadelphia. People used the word to describe the heavy traffic jam(堵塞) and the most
crowded streets on the day after Thanksgiving, because people all went into the shopping malls and shops to buy things they
wanted. It brought a lot of trouble to the drivers and policemen. And also on this day, the business could move into “black”,
and this meant that it helped the shop owners make a lot of money. That was why people called it “Black Friday”. More
than twenty years later, the phrase became more and more popular.

The earth is our home. We must take care of it. Life today is easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has
brought some new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. We can see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or
the river was not clean in a place any longer, people went to another place. Now human beings are slowly polluting the

whole world, which makes this difficult.
There are many kinds of pollution such as noise pollution and water pollution. But air pollution is still the most serious,
because it’s bad for all the living things in the world. Many countries don’t allow people to burn(燃烧) something bad for
air in houses and factories in the city. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous and the worst, because of the heavy
traffic. People say it’s the best to ride bikes. If you choose to ride bikes in your daily life, the pollution will be less and less.
But in fact, most people don’t go to work by bike. It’s not because bikes are expensive or people are tired if they ride to
work. It’s because the number of the cars on the road becomes larger and people even can’t ride bikes on the streets. The
road is filled with so many cars with their bad air coming out. So more people put away their bikes and choose to go to
work by car. Then, things are getting worse and worse. To solve this problem, we should have special roads only for bikes
and make it difficult and expensive for drivers to take their cars into the city. And also the government(政府) should take
actions.
So we can see it’s also our duty to save the earth and it’s time to protect the environment together. Everybody should
play a part in making our earth a better place for people.
5. _________ is the most serious pollution on the earth right now.
A. Noise pollution B. Air pollution C. Water pollution D. Light pollution
6. Many years ago, people _________if the environment became worse.
A. went to another place B. took actions to make it better
C. asked the government for help D. still polluted the earth slowly
7. We can learn from the third paragraph that_________.
A. air pollution is bad for all the things in the world
B. many countries don’t allow people to burn something bad for air everywhere
C. the bikes are expensive so people don’t go to work by bike
D. more people put away their bikes because there is no way for the bikes in the street
8. The author writes the passage to_________.
A. tell people the reason for the pollution
B. discuss different kinds of pollution
C. ask people to save the world and protect the environment together
D. tell people how bad the air pollution is

Recently, a piece of news draws many people’s attention. Do you still remember the actress Hermione Granger in the
Harry Porter movies She is Emma Watson, a 26-six-year-old girl from Britain. What did she do
Emma hid(藏) 100 copies of a book called Mom & Me in London’s subway. The book by an American writer Maya
Angelou tells stories between her mother and her. She put the books in different places in the subway. And in each book,
you may be surprised to find that there is a hand-written note by Emma. She asked people to “take special care” of these
books if they are lucky to find them. What’s more, she also wrote that “When you finish reading the book, please leave it in
the subway again for someone else to find it.” In fact, Watson’s work is a part of an activity called Books on the
Underground. It asks people to leave their own books in the subway, and they should also keep the books well.
Hollie Belton, a woman in London, started this activity in 2012. She loves reading in the subway and she found that a
lot of people shared her habit. Over the years, she has left over 2000 books of her own. Maybe because people don’t want to
play with their phones all the time when taking the subway, more and more people join in this activity and it is becoming
more and more popular today.

are a number of ways to do this.
If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask
for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me
that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow ” “Is there any wine ” “Did you buy
any bread ”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible
to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability.
In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me… ” or “Can I have… ” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and
“May I have… ” is preferred.
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give… ” You can also use “May/Can I borrow… ” “Could/Can you lend

(24-25 九年级上·全国·课后作业)We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of
their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online
that they say “sorry” up to eight times a day.
After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries,
manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower
and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的)
country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please” and “thank you” is
quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or
they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are
always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from
saying what they truly think.
1.What don’t the British people often do
A.Eating fish and chips. B.Having no good manners.
C.Being polite to others. D.Talking about the weather.
2.The British people say “_________” up to eight times every day.
A.hello B.thank you C.I don’t know D.sorry
3.According to the passage, why are the British people so polite
① The upper classes should have good manners.
② They have learned much about politeness at school.
③ They like to hold back their true feelings.
④ They are not honest at all.
A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④
4.What does the underlined word “pretending” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Planing. B.Acting. C.Imagining. D.Tasting.

Annie a local friend. But when I gave the card to her, she cried, “My name is written in red ink(墨水)!” She said in

(2024·山东泰安·二模)For centuries, China has been known as “a state of ceremonies”, which means Liyi Zhibang.
There was much greeting etiquette in ancient China. And the fist-and-palm salute (拱手礼) was quite a classic example.
Today, although Chinese people usually shake hands when meeting friends and relatives, people still make fist-and-palm
salutes when they are paying a visit to someone during the Spring Festival or attending someone’s wedding or birthday
reception.
The fist-and-palm salute has a history of more than 3,000 years. Since the Western Zhou Dynasty, people had already
performed it when meeting peers (同 辈 ). In ancient times, if people met a stranger, they would prepare for a fight if
necessary, and their hands were always ready for holding any weapon (武器). Holding hands together pointed towards
themselves was a gesture of saying “relax”, meaning “I’m not with any weapons and I’m not here to pick a fight.” Later, it
became the etiquette when people met each other or showed thanks.
So, how should people do the fist-and-palm salute properly Firstly, stand at attention. If you’re a man, make a half

fist (拳) with your right hand, then hold the right hand with your left hand in front of your chest, look at the person, raise
both hands to the eyebrow (眉毛), bend down and shake hands gently three times. At the same time, you can also say some
lucky greeting words. If you’re a woman, you should do it the other way which should be the right hand on the top.
People may be more familiar with the hold-fist salute, called Baoquan li
in Chinese. It is widely used among the kung fu masters and students. This
gesture is formed by holding the right fist very tightly closed and covering it
with the left hand open, and extending both arms slightly forward in front of the

can discover Maori culture!
“Kia ora!” is a way to greet Maori. It doesn’t just mean “hello”—it also means life and health. It can be used to say
“thank you” or “cheers” too. When Maori meet important guests, instead of handshakes, they do a hongi —touching their
noses two or three times.
Maori are famous for kapa haka, which is a powerful combination (组 合 ) of songs, dances and chanting. It is
performed by Maori during special festivals. Pukana is an important facial (脸部的) expression of these dances. For Maori,

may express strong and deep-felt feelings.
Besides, Maori have a form of body art, known as tattoos (纹身) . And the facial tattoos have special meanings
because Maori believe the head is the most important part of the body. For example, men receive mataora on their faces as a
symbol of high positions in society. Moko kauae are received by women on their lips and chins. A moko shows a woman’s
