Unit 5
Listen and answer the questions.
Last Wednesday.
At the bus station.
I helped the old man get on the bus and told the boy to follow the rules.
I've learnt that rules are important in life.
--What's your story When and where did it happen
--Last Wednesday, I was waiting in line at the bus station.
--What happened
--The bus came. But a boy suddenly cut in line and the old
man before me nearly fell over.
--That's terrible. What did you do
-- I helped the old man get on the bus. Then I told the boy to
follow the rules. The boy said sorry to the old man.
--You did a good thing.
--Well, I've learnt that rules are important in life.
Last Sunday, I decided to build a model airplane. I love doing such projects in order to challenge my hands-on skills.
At first, I was in a hurry and skipped reading the instructions carefully. Please imagine how messy that was! I tried to put the wrong parts together and ended up with a mess. Then I remembered my dad’s words: “People have to follow rules, especially when doing detailed work.”
So I started over, following each step strictly. This rule is useful because it saved me from more mistakes and helped me finish the model beautifully. From this experience, I have learnt that patience and following rules can turn a frustrating task into a rewarding one.

Think and answer the questions:
Why must we obey the rules?
What do you think is it Ok sometimes to break the rules?
We must obey the rules mainly to keep order, protect everyone’s rights, safety and help society run smoothly.
It can be okay to break rules sometimes, but only in very specific situations where doing so serves a greater good, like protecting life, safety, or fairness.

Argument 3: Example:
Breaking rules can save lives in emergencies.
Breaking unfair rules promotes social progress.
Breaking rules can protect people’s health and safety in special situations.
A passerby breaks the “no entry” rule of a closed area to rescue a child who is drowning.
People broke unfair racial segregation rules in history to fight for equal rights.
A student breaks the “no eating in class” rule to give a candy to a classmate who is having a hypoglycemic attack.
赞成方(It is OK to break the rules sometimes)
In my opinion, I believe that it is OK to break the rules sometimes. For example, when someone breaks a “no entry” rule to save a drowning child, it’s a life-saving act.
I understand some may worry about chaos, but in emergencies or when rules are unfair, breaking them serves a greater good. I can't agree with the idea that rules must never be broken because life-saving and justice matter more.
In conclusion, for one thing, breaking rules can save lives; for another, it can push for fairer societies.

Argument 1: Example:
Argument 2: Example:
Argument 3: Example:
Breaking rules leads to chaos and disorder.
Breaking rules undermines fairness and trust.
Breaking rules may cause harm to oneself and others.
If drivers all break traffic rules, roads will be full of accidents, and no one can travel safely.
If a student cheats in an exam (breaks the school rule), it’s unfair to classmates who study hard, and teachers will lose trust in students.
If someone breaks the “no swimming alone” rule in a lake, they might drown and put rescuers at risk too.
反对方(It is not OK to break the rules sometimes)
In my opinion, I believe that it is not OK to break the rules sometimes. For example, if students cheat in exams, it’s unfair to hard-working classmates. I understand some may say rules can be broken in emergencies, but most rule-breaking is selfish and causes chaos. I can't agree with the idea that breaking rules is OK because it undermines order and trust.
In conclusion, for one thing, breaking rules leads to disorder; for another, it harms fairness and safety.
