When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter, smiles, love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to have more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter (直升飞机) is called the detector-bot. It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake. This robot has a high-definition 360 degrees panoramic (全景) camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr Qi Juntong, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn’t need a distant control. We just set the destination information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”
This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any sign of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go. As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40 centimeters long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply robot. With its 10-meter-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquid.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team next year.
8.What do we know about the detector robot
A.It is carried by the helicopter. B.It weighs about 30 kilos.
C.It can work without rest. D.It is a machine with a length of 10 meters.
9.Dr Qi Juntong thinks this robot is different from the others mainly because_________.
A.It has more functions. B.It has a unique shape.
C.It has more advanced cameras. D.It can work by itself once given the information.
10.What is the author’s attitude towards the earthquake rescue robots in the passage
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Neutral. D.Critical.
11.The text is mainly about_________.
A.An introduction to the robot. B.What the robot looks like.
C.How the robot is made. D.Information about earthquakes.
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed (固定的) mindset believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow (枕头)” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But with the first real day of high school coming, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
12.Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset
A.I’m at the starting point of my ability. B.My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C.I should start studying a little earlier next time. D.It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
13.What might the author encourage parents to do according to the passage
A.To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B.To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C.To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D.To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
14.What is the third weapon mainly about
A.Enjoying good health. B.Being able to say no.
C.Planning schedules properly. D.Balancing schoolwork and play.
15.Which one is the best title of the passage
A.Making Friends in High School.
B.Academic Challenges in High School.
C.Differences between Middle School and High School.
D.Preparations for High School: What You Need to Know.
How to Choose the Right School Club

18 Are you looking to develop new skills, build leadership experience, or simply have fun with friends Different clubs offer different benefits, so it’s important to choose one that matches your goals. For example, if you’re aiming to improve your public speaking skills, joining the Debate Club might be a great option.Manage Your Time
While it can be tempting (诱惑) to join various clubs, 19 Balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and personal time is key to avoiding burnout. Choose one or two clubs that you are truly passionate about, rather than spreading yourself too thin. 20
Finally, don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. High school is a time to explore new interests and discover new talents. If a club piques (激发) your curiosity, give it a try — you might find a new passion that you never expected!
A.Don’t Be too Curious
B.Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New
C.it’s important to consider your schedule.
D.it’s necessary to consider your hobbies.
E.A community service club could be perfect for you.
F.Here are some tips to help you make the best choice.

Here’s my advice: Firstly, try to stay calm and listen to their point of view — it shows respect and understanding. Secondly, communicate your feelings honestly, but do it politely. If needed, suggest a break to cool down and think things over. These steps might help in rebuilding your relationship.
Hope you find this helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
