Coral Reefs
A reef is a ridge of material at or near the surface of the ocean. There are natural and artificial reefs. Ecosystems are sometimes classified into terrestrial, or land-based, and aquatic (in the water). Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and delicate ecosystems on the planet.Barrier reefs are the most common type of reef. They are separated from the coast by a ring of water known as a lagoon.

More than 25 million years old, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of living coral growing on dead coral. It is host to many species of birds and sea creatures. 4. To get this job, the candidates had to make a short video showing how much they knew about the reef. They also needed to prove why they were the best person to do the job. Out of the thousands of applicants, eleven were selected, including a young woman from China. Eventually, the job was offered to Ben Southall from the UK.

5. Ben did a lot during his time as an island caretaker. In addition to blogging, taking photos and writing articles about the reef, he made a number of appearances on television to argue in favour of its defence. He also worked as a presenter for the National Geographic Channel, before going on to write a book about his experiences. Ben later joked that the job should have been advertised not as the “best”, but the “busiest job in the world”!

6. Whether it was a genuine job or an eye-catching marketing event isn't really important. The most important thing was that people all over the world became aware of the beauty of the ocean in the area. What's more, they came to understand the delicate balance that the environment exists in and what can, and must, be done to protect the reef. That way, it will remain a safe habitat for wildlife, as well as a dream destination for the millions of tourists who visit it each year.

About the campaign
Multi-award-winning campaign, the Best Job in the World, launched globally in January 2009 and offered a six-month dream job for a Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.
The initiative is one of Tourism and Events Queensland’s most globally-recognised campaigns which aimed to raise Queensland’s international profile as an aspirational holiday destination, featuring the islands of the Great Barrier Reef as its centrepiece.
The Best Job in the World campaign predominantly targeted the international youth market in the UK, Europe, USA, Japan, New Zealand, South Pacific, Ireland and Nordic regions, South East Asia, greater China and South Korea.
It attracted unprecedented levels of global attention and saw 35,000 applications from over 200 countries submitted.
Island Caretaker
On 6 May 2009, 34-year-old British charity events organiser Ben Southall was appointed Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.
During Ben’s six-month role he:
Visited almost 100 Queensland destinations.
Fielded more than 450 media interviews, including one with Oprah Winfrey.
Posted more than 60 blogs.
Generated 2,000 photos, 47 video diaries and more than 1,000 tweets
Results
The campaign increased international awareness of the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and delivered:
More than $430 million in estimated global public relations value thanks to global news coverage.
Approximately 8.6 million website visits, including more than 200,000 in the first 24 hours, and 55 million page views over the campaign duration.
An 8th place ranking on the list of the world’s top 50 PR stunts of all time – Taylor Herring (publicity stunts agency, UK).
Numerous domestic and international award wins including seven at the 2009 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, and induction into the Public Relations News Platinum Public Relations Awards Hall of Fame 2014.
