The rule: We use the past continuous tense to talk about things that were happening at a particular time in the past.
结构 was/were + doing(verb-ing) 肯定 I/He/She/It was + doing We/You/They were + doing 否定 I/He/She/It was not + doing We/You/They were not + doing 一般疑问句和简略回答 Was I doing ... Yes, you were. No, you were not.
Was he/she/it doing ... Yes, he/she/it was. No, he/she/it wasn’t.
Were you doing ... Yes, I was. No, I wasn’t.
Yes, we were. No, we weren’t.
Were we doing ... Yes, we/you were. No, we/you were not.
Were they doing ... Yes, they were. No, they weren’t.

When there are two long actions, we often use while.
We were watching in fear while the firemen were putting out the fire.
If the shorter action is in the main clause, we can use when, while or as to join the clauses.
When/While/As Millie was watching TV, lightning hit her building.
If the longer action is in the main clause, we often use when to join the clauses.
Millie was watching TV when lightning hit her building.
When a shorter action happened at the same time as a longer action, we use the past continuous tense for the longer action and the simple past tense for the shorter action. We use the conjunctions “when, while and as” to combine the two parts.

Possible answer
At 7:00 p.m. last Sunday, there was a sudden power cut in my town.
Each member of my family was doing different things at that time, and the power cut affected us in many ways. My mother was cooking in the kitchen when the whole house had the power cut. Therefore, we had to eat some bread and fruit. My father was writing an important report in the study. He had to write it later. I was taking a shower at that time. I had no choice but to put on my clothes in the dark.
From then on, we realized the importance of electricity in our daily lives.

1. Finish A2 in Workbook on page 143.
2. Write about an emergency or a natural disaster that happened in your hometown, or you heard about, using the past continuous tense.
Optional homework:
Interview your friends or classmates on their experiences in some emergencies. Practise using past continuous tense to know more details at that moment.
