“Although the main cultural influence since 1788 has been Western culture” 澳大利亚作为英国的殖民地,起初并不被重视。因为离亚洲太远,而且当时还是个不毛之地。为此,英国是将其视作“流放之地”。1788年1月，英国开始向澳大利亚流放罪犯，以解决监狱人满为患的问题，第一舰队由11艘船只组成，载着730多名罪犯在澳大利亚植物学湾（悉尼东南部）登陆。殖民开始了。随着殖民的开始，西方文化也随之流入这片土地。
