Unit 3 Careers and skills
Period 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading(1)
Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
Twenty five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 per cent of them put vloggers as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.①
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach the audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.②
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(交流) with their fans about everyday life.③
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame(名声) and fortunes.④ For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but that allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies.⑤ Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It's an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him.

A[2023淮安期末]
Perhaps one day, robots could be cleaning up human caused pollution in the ocean. At least that's what scientists hope to achieve with the development of the Jellyfish Bot(水母机器人), a robotic device which looks like a jellyfish that could help pick up pollutants underwater.
The robot is about the size of a hand. The artificial muscles, called HASELs, can contract and expand, allowing the Jellyfish Bot to move through the water. Like a real jellyfish, the robot's movements create currents beneath it. Jellyfish use the currents to collect nutrients, while Jellyfish Bots use these motions to trap pollutants. The robots move at a speed of 6.1 centimetres per second, trapping objects along the way, whether it's a single robot or multiple ones working together. With larger objects, it may require at least two robots to collect and bring the items to the surface for recycling.
“It is also able to collect fragile biological samples such as fish eggs. Meanwhile, there is no negative impact on the surrounding environment. The interaction with aquatic(水生的) species is gentle and nearly noise free,” explained Tianlu Wang, a postdoctoral researcher.
According to the researchers, the robot is no louder than background noise, so it shouldn't menace sea life. The insulating polymer(绝缘聚合物) shell around the robot shouldn't harm humans or fish if it were to be torn apart.
For now, the robots are powered by thin wires, which prohibits their practical use in oceanic settings. But the scientists hope that they can achieve a wireless Jellyfish Bot in the near future.
“Seventy per cent of oceanic litter is estimated to sink to the seabed. Plastics make up more than 60% of this litter, taking hundreds of years to degrade. Therefore, we saw an urgent need to develop a robot to move or control objects such as litter and transport it upwards,” scientist Hyeong Joon Joo said. “We hope that underwater robots could one day assist in cleaning up our oceans.”
( ) 1. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The working principle of the Jellyfish Bot.
B. The main parts of the Jellyfish Bot.
C. The effect of the robot on the ocean.
D. The threat of pollutants to the ocean.
( ) 2. What does the underlined word “menace” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Destroy. B. Threaten. C. Transform. D. Dominate.
( ) 3. What do we know about wireless Jellyfish Bots
A. They have been widely used underwater.
B. They lack practical use in oceanic settings.
C. They will take the place of the wire robots.
D. They will be researched and developed for use.
( ) 4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. It's of Great Urgency to Clean Up Ocean Pollutants
B. A New Function of Robots Is Just Around the Corner

B[2024邯郸期末]
A recent study in the journal Current Biology found that people danced 12% more when very low frequency bass(低音) was played. Scientists wanted to see what factors of music make us want to dance. “We look at things like what kinds of rhythms make us really drawn in and want to move more,” said Daniel Cameron, a neuroscientist and the lead author of the study.
Volunteers were led into a lab that was changed into an electronic dance music concert, with live music performed for them, who were equipped with headbands that had a motion capture sensor. The lab had special speakers that could play a very low frequency bass, undetectable to the human ear. The set lasted about an hour. Researchers introduced the very low bass every 2.5 minutes and found that the concertgoers moved more when the speakers were on—even though they couldn't hear it.
Cameron thinks that our vestibular(前庭的) system can help explain the reason. “It's the inner ear structures that give us a sense of where our head is in space,” he says. “That system is sensitive to low frequency stimulation, especially if it's loud.”
Some people hear music and can't help but move, whether there are low, silent bass frequencies or not. So why do humans dance “It's hard to test this, but there has been some work on why we may have evolved this way. We know that moving together in synchrony(同步) when we're making music together and dancing together leads to social bonding. We feel better about the people we're with. We feel more connected with them,” Cameron says. “So you can imagine this has potential advantages for groups throughout the long history of our species.”
Evolution aside, Cameron finds value in knowing his study has uncovered just one of the ingredients for what makes us want to dance a little bit more.
( ) 5. What does Cameron's research focus on
A. The popularity of dancing among people.
B. The evolutionary reasons why humans dance.
C. The musical elements that encourage dancing.
D. The little effect of low frequency bass on dancers.
( ) 6. What can we learn about the research setup described in Paragraph 2
A. Low frequency bass was played regularly.
B. Participants tracked their own movements.
C. The dance music was performed in a live concert.
D. The human speakers performed for an entire hour.
( ) 7. Why might humans have evolved to dance according to Cameron
A. To inspire imagination. B. To promote communication.
C. To create work opportunities. D. To stimulate the body's potential.
( ) 8. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Science of Dance B. The Benefit Behind Dancing
C. The Role of Rhythms in Music D. The Evolution of the Musical System

Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler
Saint Maybe is an example of how one small mistake can result in tragedy(悲剧) for a family with lives changed forever. The true strength of the novel lies in the author's ability to write with sincerity and understanding. I've read this book many times over and always find it inspirational when it comes to writing my own novels about the complexities of family life.
—Eric James
Silly Verse for Kids by Spike Milligan
This book is so tiny and thin, but I loved all these funny poems inside—and it made me want to write rhymes. After reading this, I started writing my own poetry. I like including silly poems and lyrics in my books, which is definitely down to the influence of this book. It's a book that you would read as a kid and it would really stimulate your imagination.
—Liz Pichon
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
A book read at my father's knee and one that inspired my imagination and shaped my writing life. My desire to fall down a rabbit hole that might take me to Wonderland surpassed(胜过) my other childhood wishes. Wonderland with its Cheshire Cat and never ending tea parties, which were reflected in a life long love of cats and cakes, suited me best.
—Menna van Praag
Bambi by Felix Salten
My mum read this to me before I could read, and later I read it to myself again and again. In the Suffolk countryside where I grew up, I would often spot deer in the fields. This book made me stop and study the animal tracks on the ground and made me think about the world around me in a different way, setting me on the path to being a writer.

My senior year at Westfield High School was supposed to be the best year of my life. Instead, it turned into a lesson about friendship that I would never forget.
My best friend, Emily, and I had been inseparable since middle school. But as graduation approached, the stress of exams and college applications began to weigh heavily on us. Emily and I became distant. I was focused on getting into a top university, while Emily was more interested in enjoying our last year together. Our differing goals led to disagreements, and soon enough, we started to argue over the smallest things.
One day, things reached a boiling point. We had a huge fight over a group project. Days turned into weeks, and our friendship seemed beyond repair. We avoided each other at school and stopped sitting together at lunch. Our friends tried to help, but neither of us was willing to make the first move. The silence between us was deafening, and I missed her more than I wanted to admit.
It wasn't until our English teacher assigned us to work together on a final presentation that we were forced to confront each other. At first, we worked in tense silence. But as we spent more time together, the ice began to melt. One evening, as we were finishing up our project, Emily broke the silence. “I miss us,” she said softly. “I miss you, too,” I admitted, feeling a lump in my throat. “I'm sorry for being so hard on you. I just wanted everything to be perfect.” “I'm sorry too,” Emily replied. “I should have been more understanding. We're both stressed, but we shouldn't let it ruin our friendship.” We hugged, and at that moment, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
On the graduation day, we stood side by side, proud of what we had accomplished and grateful to each other. The experience made our bond stronger, and we knew that no matter where life took us, we would always be there for each other.

Handing power tools over to young students could result in some disastrous situations. But if those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable new skills and might even find a new career path.①
One such program, in Washington, D.C., aims to teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a woodshop, completely housed inside a truck, which acts as a kind of “classroom on wheels”.②
The Mobile Woodshop program was started by the nonprofit Zenith Community Arts Foundation. Margery Goldberg, Zenith's director, is an artist and wood sculptor. She had long dreamed of creating a mobile woodshop to assist students. That dream finally came true in 2020, when the city gave her a large grant for the program. Goldberg believes woodshop programs can help prepare the next generation of woodworkers.
Students at Ballou can learn the same skills as a beginning carpenter would. These include cutting, marking, measuring, nailing and how to use different tools. The truck is equipped with all the instructional materials and tools necessary to operate as a complete mobile classroom.③ Mobile workstations are also available so students can work on projects outside the truck.
If students pass the class, they can seek to enter the union apprenticeship(学徒) program. Instead of a usual four year apprenticeship, graduates of the mobile woodshop can finish in less time.
Joe Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centers on teaching students “soft skills”. These are skills that are desirable in all jobs, such as teamwork, being able to follow instructions and arriving to work on time.④ Students also learn basic skills like math and how to read a ruler.
Largess said the class at Ballou seeks “to help some people who wouldn't have the chance to even get into the apprenticeship program, and give them a leg up”.⑤ That, he added, can “hopefully help them with a better future”.

Each year, the world produces more than 300 million tons of plastic waste, which can take a long time to break down. Almost a third of the world's plastic waste is polypropylene(聚丙烯), a hard plastic used to make bottle caps and food containers that typically take hundreds of years to degrade.
Now, a group of scientists at the University of Sydney in Australia have developed a solution: using fungi(真菌) found in soils to devour lab samples of polypropylene.
In the experiment, the scientists first weakened pieces of polypropylene plastic by exposing them to heat, chemicals, or ultraviolet(UV) light so the fungi can do their job quickly. Fungi degrade materials like plastic into simpler molecules that they can then get rid of. The usually smooth plastic becomes full of marks as the fungi carry out their dirty work.
The two fungi, Aspergillus terreus and Engyodontium album, made a meal of the plastic in the lab experiments. As the researchers reported, between 25 and 27 per cent of samples were digested after 90 days, and the plastic was completely broken down after 140 days.
More than 400 microorganisms have so far been found to degrade plastic naturally, with fungi attracting a fair bit of attention for their ability to degrade all sorts of man made materials. “Recent studies suggest some fungi may even degrade some of the ‘forever chemicals’ like PFAS, but the process is slow and not yet well understood,” explains microbiologist Dee Carter from the University of Sydney.
Currently, the team is testing ways to speed up the degradation process, and assessing the economic and environmental factors of potential commercial use. If the team can transform their laboratory solution into a commercial scale plastic waste management system, the world will finally have a promising solution to one of our most pressing environmental issues.

Have you ever imagined getting to the airport in a flying taxi, soaring over those who are stuck in traffic below What would you feel if electric air taxis could one day take you from downtown to the suburbs, high above expressway traffic, in a tiny amount of the time it takes to drive
It's not a dream in the distant future. It's the vision of electric aircraft developer Eve, which is leading a group of aviation companies and local governments and conducting simulations(模拟) in Chicago. Though the aircraft are likely years away from receiving official approval to fly, it's a vision shared by other major companies, like Chicago based United Airlines, which recently struck a conditional agreement to purchase at least 200 of Eve's flying taxis.
The concept of bypassing(绕开) traffic by air isn't new. But Eve co CEO Andre Stein said the air taxis are nothing like conventional electric helicopters or flying cars. They are designed to use eight motors distributed around the aircraft to take off vertically, then electric pushers and wings to glide forward.
Stein hopes the air taxis can help passengers reach meetings across town or provide a way to get home quickly in time for a child's birthday. Compared to an everyday option like public transport, they can help save time when necessary. Besides, the new technology is expected to make air taxis more affordable than helicopters and the ticket price could be around $100 to travel 20 miles. Stein also boasts what he describes as improved efficiency and sustainability. “It's much simpler, much lower maintenance than a helicopter, much quieter,” he said.
For now, Eve hopes their work will help provide a better understanding of how the air taxis could fit into current air traffic patterns and how they can connect with users' journey via ground transport to the heliport. “It's really about bringing another option for urban air mobility,” Stein said.
( ) 5. Why does the author raise two questions in Paragraph 1
A. To express his doubts. B. To arrange air transport.
C. To introduce Eve's vision. D. To present the current situation.
( ) 6. What is the company Eve doing in Chicago
A. Cooperating with taxi companies.
B. Working at developing flying taxis.
C. Carrying out simulations in the lab.
D. Negotiating with local governments.
( ) 7. What is Stein's attitude to electric air taxis
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Conservative.
( ) 8. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The concept of urban air mobility.
B. The benefits of air traffic patterns.
C. The prospect of flying taxi service.
D. The evolution of ground transport.

Dear_Olivia,
I'm sorry to hear that you didn't perform as well as you had hoped in the English speech contest at your school. Actually, it can be very nerve wracking to speak in front of a large audience.
The following suggestions might be helpful. For one thing, ensure you make sufficient preparations in advance. The more you practice, the better your performance will be. For another, there are some approaches to relieving nervousness, such as breathing deeply and focusing on positive thoughts.
I believe you'll make it next time.
Yours,
Li_Hua
