Grammar focus
Read the sentences and pay attention to the words in yellow.
My name is Lin Lin, and I really enjoy singing Beijing opera.
I wanted to sing, but I didn’t feel confident enough to do that.
A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses or sentences. The conjunctions are usually and, but, or, or so.
并列句
并列句是由两个或两个以上的简单句并列组合而成的句子,中间由连词连接。连词是一种虚词,不能独立作句子成分。我们已学过的and,but,or,so(so 也可作连接副词)等都是并列连词,用于表示并列、转折、选择、因果等关系。
一、并列连词的使用
1. and表示并列、顺承或递进关系。 连接的成分可以是单词、短语或句子。
e.g. I like reading, and my sister likes writing.
我喜欢阅读,我姐姐喜欢写作。
He is smart and kind. 他既聪明又善良。
2. but表示转折关系。
e.g. She is rich but not happy. 她很富有,但不开心。
The story is short but interesting. 这个故事很短,但很有趣。
3. or表示选择关系。也可用于“祈使句 + or + 陈述句”结构,表示“否则”。
e.g. You can choose the red one or the blue one.
你可以选择红色的那个或者蓝色的那个。
Study hard, or you will fail the exam.
努力学习,否则你会考试不及格。
4. so表示因果关系。用于连接一个原因和它所导致的结果。
e.g. It rained heavily, so we decided to stay at home.
雨下得很大,所以我们决定待在家里。
There are many ways to solve this problem. So, we need to choose the most suitable one.
解决这个问题有很多方法。所以,我们需要选择最合适的一种。
二、并列句的结构类型
1. 常见“简单句 + 并列连词 + 简单句”的结构。
连词前一般用逗号(也可以不用)。
e.g. She likes painting, and she often goes to the art museum on weekends.
她喜欢绘画,并且她经常在周末去美术馆。
He ran fast, but he still didn’t win the race.
他跑得很快但还是没赢得比赛。
2. 简单句+连接副词+简单句 (注意连接副词前一般用分号)。
e.g. I want to buy a new bike, however, I don’t have enough money.
我想买一辆新自行车,然而,我没有足够的钱。
He finished his work; then he went home immediately.
他完成了工作,然后立刻回家了。
三、并列句的注意事项
1. 当并列句的主语相同时,后面句子的主语可以省略。
e.g. He opened the door and (he) walked into the room.
他打开门,走进房间。
He should study harder or (he) risk failing the course.
他应该更努力学习,否则有挂科的风险。
2. 并列句中,各分句的时态一般要保持一致,但在实际语境中,如果表达不同时间发生的动作,时态也可以不同。
e.g. He worked hard in the past, but now he is very lazy.
他过去工作很努力,但现在他非常懒。
I study English every day, so I will pass the exam easily.
我每天学习英语,所以我将很容易通过考试。
