Several schools are trying to stop students from using slang (俚语). But is it worth it
The Harris Academy in Upper Norwood (London) is one school that’s taking action. Students there aren’t allowed to use words such as coz (because), ain’t (isn’t/aren’t, etc.) and yeah (yes) when they’re speaking. A letter has been sent to parents explaining the decision, according to an article in the Daily Mail.
But why “The big problem is that many of these words are appearing in written work,” explained Mr. Hank, an English teacher. “This puts many children at a disadvantage. We do want them to be able to communicate properly with people and be understood. We are going to teach them the rules. If they decide not to use these rules with friends, that is fine. But I want them to know that when writing and speaking in a formal (正式的) situation, they should use Standard English.”
So, what’s causing the problem Firstly, slang is just about everywhere these days: in TV soaps, reality shows, songs and films. Secondly, with more and more people using it in conversations with friends and workmates, it’s becoming more acceptable. Also, the increase in the use of mobile phones and social networking sites is having an influence—while texting, people often use abbreviations or phonetic forms of words, such as wot (what), dat (that), dis (this), n (and), w (with), gonna (going to) and wanna (want to).
However, many people think that the effort to control languages doesn’t make sense. “The very nature of English is its flexibility (灵活性),” said a Jamaican poet in a recent interview. “You can’t control the type of language that people use,” he added. “The reason why English is such a popular language is because it develops well to fit the way it is being used,” a language expert explained.

A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
20.What can we infer from the Jamaican poet’s words in Paragraph 5

21.Which is the best title for this passage
A.Slang matters, doesn’t it B.Is slang learning necessary at school

The days pass. Dorothy works very hard in the kitchen. She remembers Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas. She remembers her friends, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. “The Witch is dead!” she shouts. The Winkies look at her in surprise. They are also the Witch’s slaves. “We’re all free now!” she says to them. They start cheering and shouting, “The bad Witch is dead! We’re free! Thank you. Dorothy!”

Evolution (进化) may be the first reason. Different from dogs, cats haven’t changed much over the past 10,000 years. Being wet may also influence cats’ senses. Jennifer Vonk, a cat expert from Oakland University, said that cats find being wet uncomfortable, and it can make their sense of smell wrong, making them upset. 28 like the chemicals (化学物质) in tap water (自来水)。
29 For example, whiskers (腮须) help cats explore the environment and find their way. When whiskers get wet, cats might not feel movements, Vitale explained.
“In general (总体来说) cats do not need to be given a bath by their owners,” US professor Alison Diesel told VMBS News. 30 Taking showers may also bring trauma (精神创伤) to cats, which can influence the human-animal relationship.

The days pass. Dorothy works very hard in the kitchen. She remembers Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas. She remembers her friends, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. She’s very sad and she often cries. At night she goes to see the Lion. The Witch (女巫) doesn’t give him anything to eat or drink, so Dorothy takes him food and water from the kitchen. Then she lies down next to him, puts her head on his warm body and sleeps until the morning.
The Witch watches Dorothy all the time. She’s waiting for the right moment to take the silver shoes. Dorothy wears them all the time. She loves them. The only time she takes them off is when she has a bath. The Witch doesn’t like water, so she’s afraid to go near the girl when she’s in the bath.
One day Dorothy is cleaning the kitchen and she slips on the wet floor. She falls over and one of the silver shoes comes off. The Witch picks it up quickly and puts it on.
“Give me back my shoe!” Dorothy says. “No! It’s my shoe now,” the Witch replies. “You are a bad woman!” Dorothy shouts. “I want my shoe!”
There’s a bucket of water near the door. The girl picks it up and throws the water over the Witch. “Aargh!” The Witch cries. “Water is the end of me!” And she starts to disappear in front of Dorothy’s eyes.
In another minute there’s just a lot of water on the kitchen floor. Dorothy quickly takes her shoe, puts it on again and runs outside.
“The Witch is dead!” she shouts. The Winkies look at her in surprise. They are also the Witch’s slaves. “We’re all free now!” she says to them. They start cheering and shouting, “The bad Witch is dead! We’re free! Thank you. Dorothy!”
Dorothy goes to the Lion and takes the rope off his neck. He’s very happy to be free again.

Evolution (进化) may be the first reason. Different from dogs, cats haven’t changed much over the past 10,000 years. They still act a lot like their ancestors, the African wildcat. “African wildcats are usually going to be hunting on land. So they didn’t really develop the habit of being in the water,” cat expert Kristyn Vitale told Popular Science. 27
A.So we can explain that today’s cats don’t jump into pools with much excitement.
