Learning objectives
In this lesson, we will be able to:
Understand the main idea of the passage about Saihanba, including its past desolate situation, the government's decision in 1962, and its current status as the largest man-made forest in the world.
Master the usage of the to-infinitive after certain verbs, such as “to carry out the task” and “to complete the difficult task”, and be able to create more sentences using this grammar structure.
Improve students' reading comprehension ability by analyzing the text about Saihanba and answering related questions, such as finding out the differences between the two pictures and the reasons for the changes.
1 Look at the pictures of the same place and answer the questions.
A What's the difference between the two pictures
B What do you think led to the difference
2 Read the passage and complete the timeline.
Saihanba, located in the far-northern part of Hebei Province, became a green miracle.
Around the late 1950s, you could hardly see a tree or a flower anywhere in Saihanba. In 1962, the government decided to change this dead land into a forest. To carry out the task, a group of 369 foresters, mostly in their 20s, was organised.
“At the very beginning, I did not realise that the working conditions would be so harsh and the weather so bad,” said Zhao Zhenyu, one of the first-generation foresters. But they never gave up.
The foresters carried on, overcoming the challenges of the land. They used science and technology to help trees to survive harsh conditions. The Saihanba people worked hard with their hearts and minds for more than half a century.
The Saihanba Spirit inspired the foresters to complete the difficult task. Saihanba is now the largest human-made forest in the world. It plays an important role in environmental protection. People can enjoy fresh air, birds singing, and beautiful scenery there.
