① 直接置于句首,常表示事物化、抽象化概念。
说比做容易。
Talking is easier than doing.
动词-ing形式的功能
1.作主语
② 用形式主语it,把真正的主语-ing形式移置句尾。
eg 和夏洛克争辩是没有什么用的。
It is useless trying to argue with Shylock.
这事值得去做。
It’s worth making the effort.
常用-ing形式作主语的句型有:
It +is +a waste of time doing
做…是浪费时间的
It is no good/use doing
做…是没好/用处的
It is worth/worthwhile doing
做…是值得的
It is no fun doing... 做…没有乐趣

2.作宾语
作介词的宾语
be good at擅长;dream of 梦想;
care about在乎;be concerned about关心;
be interested in对……感兴趣; feel like想要;insist on坚持; think of认为;aim at瞄准;
set about开始做; be used to习惯于;
get down to开始做; lead to导致; stick to 坚持;
devote oneself to 献身于;look forward to 期待;
pay attention to注意; give up放弃
+ V-ing
(1) 接动词 -ing 形式或 to do 作宾语时意义差别不大的有:begin,start,continue,like, love,prefer,hate 等。
(2) 接动词 -ing 形式或 to do 作宾语时意义差别较大的有:
remember/forget to do sth. 记着 / 忘记要做某事
remember/forget doing sth. 记着 / 忘记做过某事
regret to do/ doing sth. 遗憾要做 / 后悔做了某事
try to do/ doing sth. 努力做 / 试着做某事
mean to do/ doing sth. 打算做 / 意味着做某事
stop to do/ doing sth. 停下来去做另一件事/ 停止做某事
can’t help(to) do/doing sth. 不能帮忙做 / 禁不住做某事
(3) 主动形式表被动意义
need/require/want doing sth.=需要被做某事
need/require/want to be done,表示被动含义
The room needs equipping /to be equipped with a video camera.
这个房间需要安装一台摄像机。
He stopped ________ (smoke) and have a rest.

3.作定语
①说明被修饰词的性质、特征、用途或所修饰的人/事物的动作、状态

② –ing 形式短语作定语时,放在所修饰的名词之后,并且在意思上相当于一个定语从句。
They lived in a room facing the street.
= They lived in a room that faces the street.
1.) The boy (play)football on the playground is my younger brother.
2.) I have never seen a more (move) movie.
3.) The woman (send) her children to school is my history teacher.

4.作表语
说明主语的性质、状态或内容。
Her hobby is painting.
My job is looking after the children.
表示正在进行的动作或经常存在的状态。
1.感官动词
(常见的有see,hear,feel,smell, find,notice,observe)+sb+doing sth(作宾补)。
When I came in,I saw Linda comforting the crying girl.
我进来时,看见琳达在安慰那个哭泣的女孩。
5.作宾语补足语
2.使役动词(have,let,keep,get,leave)+sb/sth+doing sth(作宾补)。让…一直做某事”
We kept the fire burning all night long.
我们让火整夜燃烧着。
3.with复合结构。
I couldn't do my homework with the noise going on.
由于噪音不断,我没法做家庭作业。
(1)They use computers to keep the traffic ________(run) smoothly.
(2)The old couple often take a walk after supper in the park with their pet dog ___________(follow) them.

现在分词(短语)作状语,修饰谓语动词,在意义上相当于状语从句,可以与状语从句转换,表示时间、原因、条件、方式、让步等。其逻辑主语为句子的主语,两者之间为主动关系。
