Answer the questions.
1 What does the writer mean by the expression "in hot water"
The expression "in hot water" is an idiom that means being in a difficult or troublesome situation. In the context of the article, it refers to someone facing cyberbullying or other online problems, such as receiving mean messages or being harassed(被骚扰).
2 Why does the writer choose to use this expression instead of a
more direct one
To make the text more vivid and natural – Idioms like "in hot water" sound more conversational and less formal than saying "in trouble." This makes the advice feel friendlier and easier to understand.
To soften a serious topic – Cyberbullying can be a heavy subject, especially for young readers. Using the expression makes the warning less scary while still getting the point across.
Think and Share
1 Why does the writer mention a situation from the past at
the beginning
Find words about comparing situations in the passage. This will help you understand the writer's purpose more effectively.
Learning to think for question 1
It shows the internet's development and benefits, creating a contrast(对比). This helps readers realize the internet solves old problems but brings new risks, smoothly leading to safety tips and making readers more receptive to the following advice.
2 Why do people need to make new rules
Because the internet, while enabling easy connections, brings new risks (like privacy leaks, scams from strangers, cyberbullying). New rules help people know how to protect themselves, avoid dangers, and use the internet safely.
Don’t click suspicious links.—They might contain viruses or scams.
Log out of shared devices.— Prevent others from accessing your accounts.
Check privacy settings.— Control who sees your posts/photos.
Verify(核实) information.— Not everything online is true (avoid fake news).
3 Can you think of other important rules for online safety

2 Why is it important to have rules for these new things
3 What rules are there for the new things
Protect users.
Ensure fairness.
Promote (促进) safety.
Apps must ask before accessing your photos, contacts, or location.
Step③
Write the rule list using the information above.
Step④
Check. Did you:
include all the points in Step 2
use the words and expressions from the reading passage
give your reasons why we should follow these rules
Step⑤
Share your list with the class.
Post-writing
