Knit (针织) for Nature
WhoWeAre
The Penguin Foundation works to protect Phillip Island's native wildlife and enhance the natural
environment. One of the key projects is our long-running Knits for Nature program.
Why Your Help matters
For over 20 years, this program has served two critical purposes. Initially, hand-knitted jumpers
were essential for saving Little Penguins affected by oil spills (泄漏). When Little Penguins get oiled,
they can poison themselves by eating oil. Knitted jumpers help to prevent them from reaching their
feathers until rescuers wash them clean. Thanks to the generosity of knitters worldwide, our care
center is now well-stocked with these life-saving jumpers for 40,000 penguins.
Today, the program’s primary goal is to seek financial support. We now use these jumpers,
dressed on penguin toys, as popular souvenirs sold in our stores. Each sale directly supports our
ongoing wildlife protection work.
HowYou Can Help
We invite you to keep knitting creative jumpers for us! Themed designs such as those featuring
Christmas colours, football themes, world flags, or ocean themes are welcomed as souvenirs. For
safety, we cannot accept items with buttons or sharp decorations that could pose a danger to children.
Please ensure jumpers stick to the following sizes in the picture.
A huge thank you to all the wonderful knitters who have contributed to making a difference for
Phillip Island’s precious wildlife!
11. How do the jumpers help save Little Penguins
A. By lowering care costs. B. By cleaning oily feathers.
C. By acting as important barriers. D. By drawing rescuers’ attention.
12. What is the current purpose of the Knits for Nature program
A. To raise funds. B. To prevent oil spills.
C. To educate the public. D. To inspire creative design.
13. Which of the following jumpers is acceptable
A. A red jumper with a secure button. B. A green jumper with a knitted dolphin.
C. A 18cm-wide jumper with a football logo. D. A 15cm-long jumper with a UN flag pattern.

For generations, the name Milton Hershey has been a well-known word closely connected with
fine chocolate products throughout the country and around the world. He was born in 1857 on a farm
near Derry Church, a small Pennsylvania community. Frequent family moves interrupted his
schooling and left him with limited education. He only completed the fourth grade.
Following a four-year apprenticeship (学徒期) with a Lancaster candy maker, he established his
2
{#{QQABYYIUgggAAJJAAAgCUwXgCkMYkAGCCKgGQFAUoAAAwRNABAA=}#}
first candy-making business in Philadelphia. That initial effort failed as did his next two attempts in
Chicago and New York. However, he never gave up his hope to build up his own business. Returning
to Lancaster in 1883, Hershey established the Lancaster Caramel Company, which quickly became
an outstanding success. It was this business that established him as a candy maker and set the stage
for future achievements.
Hershey became fascinated with German chocolate-making machinery exhibited at the 1893
World’s Columbian Exposition. He bought the equipment for his Lancaster plant and soon began
producing various chocolate creations. Then in 1900, he sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. in order to
focus entirely on his chocolate business.
Three years later, Hershey returned to Derry Church to build a new factory. There he could
obtain the large supplies of fresh milk needed to perfect and produce fine milk chocolate. Through
trial and error, he created his own formula for milk chocolate. In 1903 he began construction on what
was to become the world’s largest chocolate plant. After its completion, Hershey's milk chocolate
quickly became the first nationally marketed product of its kind.
With Milton Hershey’s success came a great sense of social responsibility. Hershey created a
completely new community around his factory. He built a model town for his employees that
included comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school
system and broad cultural opportunities. The town of Hershey continues to be a special place for its
residents and a popular at action for millions of visitors each year. Indeed, Milton Hershey's
achievements do speak for themselves.
14. What stopped Hershey from having systematic school education
A. His family’s continual relocation. B. His lack of interest in study.
C. His failure to meet school requirements. D. His parents’ attaching little value to education.
15. Why did Hershey sell his Lancaster plant
A. The plant had suffered a huge loss.
B. The produced candies were of low quality.
C. His machinery business needed a lot of money.
D. He decided to commit himself to chocolate production.
16. Which of the following best describes Hershey
A. Gentle and open-minded. B. Determined and public-spirited.
C. Honest and generous. D. Humorous and creative.
17. What can be the most suitable title for the text
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Impossible is nothing to a willing heart. D. Great hopes and good wills make great man.

Stanford assistant professor Ruike Zhao published a groundbreaking medical breakthrough in
Nature: using a tiny 2 mm micro-robot, she increased the success rate of blood clot (血块) removal
from a mere 11% to an amazing 90%, sending shockwaves through the medical world.
In modern society, about one in every dozen people may experience a blood clot in their lifetime.
It is widely known that blood clots are the leading cause of strokes and heart attacks. During
treatment, the ability to quickly and effectively restore blood flow becomes a matter of life and
death.
Unfortunately, traditional mechanical methods have a low success rate. The process is like trying
to pick up broken tofu with chopsticks — not only is success unlikely, but the situation may even
worsen. Blood clots may break apart while being deformed, resulting in small pieces stuck in
hard-to-reach areas.
3
{#{QQABYYIUgggAAJJAAAgCUwXgCkMYkAGCCKgGQFAUoAAAwRNABAA=}#}
However, Professor Zhao’s 2 mm micro-robot enters blood vessels (血管) and, using high-speed
rotation (旋转), generates forces to reduce the clot size to 5%. It’s like when you press and rub soft
things, like hair, between your hands. The force makes them stick together into a small ball. The
micro-robot works similarly, using pressure to bring the clot components together, making them
easier to remove. This process requires no drugs, causes no vessel damage, and effectively releases
trapped red blood cells back into blood.
What’s astonishing is that this innovation is inspired from subway TBMs, tunnel-boring
machines (盾构机). The way tunnel-boring machines efficiently handle hard soil and rock in narrow
spaces inspired the creation. This brilliant Chinese researcher miniaturized the enormous
underground machine to a size tens of thousands of times smaller, and adapted it for use in human
blood vessels.
Currently, the technology has been successfully tested on pigs. While most of these studies
remain in the laboratory phase, the breakthrough itself is exciting. This technology may soon extend
beyond blood clots to address issues like kidney stones or gallstones.
18. What is the advantage of Zhao’s micro-robot over traditional methods
A. It is recyclable and economical. B. It generates blood more rapidly.
C. It prevents clots from forming again. D. It raises success rate and reduces side effects.
19. Why does the author mention the action of rubbing hair between hands in paragraph 4
A. To illustrate how people usually deal with soft things in daily life.
B. To explain the physical principle behind the micro-robot's function.
C. To describe a common method used in other medical treatments.
D. To emphasize the soft nature of blood clots compared to hair.
20. What does the underlined word “miniaturized” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. enlarged B. simplified C. shrank. D. strengthened.
21. What is the last paragraph about
A. Choice of new research methods. B. Possible difficulty for further study.
C. Potential application of the invention. D. Necessity for tests on more animals.
D
Imagine the final stretch of a marathon: your body aches, but the cheering crowd gives you
energy to run faster. Similarly, a basketball team wins more home games in front of their own fans.
Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches. These common experiences all point
to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation (促进 ), which describes how individuals can
perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to when they are alone. The
concept was first proposed by psychologist Norman Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced faster
in groups. He tested his theory with a simple experiment where children were tasked with winding
fishing line. Tripplett observed that the children who were being around others moved faster,
suggesting that a peer nearby can motivate.
But later studies found conflicting evidence. In another test, participants were given a more
complex task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others performed worse than those
working alone. This contradiction led to a key change of the theory. The presence of an audience
tends to improve performance on simple tasks. On the other hand, for novel tasks, the same audience
can hurt performance.
Why does this happen Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about being judged
by others. Since approval and disapproval often depend on others’ evaluations, we naturally become
more alert in front of an audience. This alertness helps with mastered skills, but gets in the way of
4
{#{QQABYYIUgggAAJJAAAgCUwXgCkMYkAGCCKgGQFAUoAAAwRNABAA=}#}
learning new ones.
There isn’t one recipe for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in the right
direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an instrument, strategically seek
an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If you struggle when watched, practice alone
until you gain confidence. By taking advantage of social settings wisely, we can use the audience
effect to achieve our best performance.
22. What is the main idea of social facilitation
A. Group interaction enhances learning efficiency.
B. Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C. Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D. The presence of others can influence our performance.
23. Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3
A. The size of the audience. B. The difficulty of the task.
C. The type of the reward. D. The personality of the participant.
24. What is the root cause of social facilitation
A. Evaluation anxiety. B. Peer pressure.
C. Competitive desire. D. Personal standard.
25. What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon
A. Thoughtfully manage social contexts. B. Gradually increase audience size.
C. Actively observe others' performances. D. Strategically seek supportive audiences.

第五部分 读后续写(满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Little Notes
Once again, I headed out to look for a job. Although I wasn’t very confident about the interview, I
still held my head high, trying to stay hopeful under the morning sun. Before leaving, I made sure to
stick a note on the fridge that read, “Son, finish your breakfast and have a good day.” Then I walked
out of the door.
This quiet tradition came from my father. I still remember how, before every trip, he would leave a
note on my desk: “I’ll come back with gifts for you.” When I stayed up late studying, I would open
my pencil box and find another note inside: “Go to bed and have a good dream.” During summer
camp, I would find a little note in my pocket that said, “Take care of yourself.” Those small pieces of
paper were my first understanding of love — a gentle way of reminding me that someone always
cared.
Years later, when my own son Jack was old enough to read, I continued the tradition. I left little
notes throughout his life: “You are smarter than you think” in his math book, “Son, my little sun” on
his bedroom door, and “Good luck at soccer” inside his shoe. He never said anything about them, but
he became a happy, brave, and kind boy. That was enough for me.
Then came the hardest winter of my life. My company cut our pay, and people began whispering
about who might lose their jobs. I worked every day with a heavy heart, always anxious, but in the
end, I was still told to leave. It was a huge shock — but things got even harder. My husband lost his
job too and had to move to another city to find work. I didn’t have time to feel sad. I needed to find a
new job quickly to support our family.

That evening, after another long, unsuccessful day, I came home exhausted. The
house was dark and silent, amplifying the weight of my worries. As I dragged myself
to the kitchen for a glass of water, a small, folded piece of paper on the counter caught
my eye. Next to it was a freshly washed apple. My tired fingers unfolded the note, and
in my son Jack’s careful handwriting, it read: “Mom, you are stronger than you feel.
Love, Jack.” Tears welled up instantly, blurring the words.
The apple was refreshing and sweet, and so was the note. They were simple gifts,
but they filled me with warmth and strength. In that quiet moment, all the stress and
sadness of the day melted away. I smiled through my tears, feeling the power of love
that had been passed down through three generations. The notes I had once left for Jack
had come full circle. He was now the one lifting me up, just like my father once did. I
realized that love, when shared, grows stronger, one small note at a time.
