clepsydra(漏刻)也是水钟的一种。铜壶滴漏(又称漏壶)是一种古代计时装置,核心原理是基于 水滴匀速累积 与 水位变化标定时间 。随着壶内水位的上升,箭尺随之上浮,人们可借此读出时间变化。

流沙从漏斗形的沙池流到初轮边上的沙斗里,驱动初轮,从而带动各级机械齿轮旋转。最后一级齿轮带动在水平面上旋转的中轮,中轮的轴心上有一根指针,指针则在一个有刻线的仪器圆盘上转动,以此显示时刻。这种沙漏脱离了天文仪器的辅助,已经独立成为一种机械性的时钟结构。由于无水压限制,沙漏比漏刻更精确。
