clepsydra(漏刻)也是水钟的一种。铜壶滴漏（又称漏壶）是一种古代计时装置，核心原理是基于 水滴匀速累积 与 水位变化标定时间 。随着壶内水位的上升，箭尺随之上浮，人们可借此读出时间变化。

流沙从漏斗形的沙池流到初轮边上的沙斗里，驱动初轮，从而带动各级机械齿轮旋转。最后一级齿轮带动在水平面上旋转的中轮，中轮的轴心上有一根指针，指针则在一个有刻线的仪器圆盘上转动，以此显示时刻。这种沙漏脱离了天文仪器的辅助，已经独立成为一种机械性的时钟结构。由于无水压限制，沙漏比漏刻更精确。
