Our first introduction took place while I was teaching a nursing course at the care center. “You need to meet our new resident, Jane!” the charge nurse said. I simply said hello to the eighty-nine-year-old lady, and five years later we are what Jane refers to as BFFs (Best Friends Forever).
Over the years, I have realized that in an intergenerational friendship such as ours, each generation has so much to learn and teach. Jane was also a nurse. I loved to hear about her nursing practice, and she was always eager to hear about today's advances in health care.
One day, I picked up all four of my grandchildren to visit Jane. The next intergenerational friendships were born. Over the next few years, I witnessed(见证) the happiness that the children and Jane shared. They developed mutual love for each other that I wished we could recreate for other elderly people. This thought stayed with me until I retired from nursing a few years later.
I spent the next eight months creating Ms. Jane and the Gigi Squad: Friendship Comes in All Ages. This labor-of-love book records the many fun events the children created for Jane over the years. They held surprise birthday parties, tea parties, and took her to school musicals.
This book has taken my life by storm as it has received diverse awards and brought many opportunities to publicly speak about intergenerational friendships.
My vision(设想) for the book was originally on a smaller scale(范围,规模) and written to encourage families with children to visit an older adult. I was greatly honored when schools began approaching me to use the book for service projects. One activity that I included in the book, titled The Sunshine Bag Project, took off, and children began giving the elderly these special bags that included letters, cards, and small treasures.
It was also a joy to know that in the next chapter of my life, I could continue to make a difference to others --- all because I had the courage to step out of my comfort zone and take a wonderful step toward authorship.
What has the author learned from her friendship with Jane
Older adults are lonely and in need of care.
Intergenerational friendships is a source of learning.
Nurses are more likely to develop friendships.
Advanced healthcare can narrow generation gaps.
What is the main theme of the author's book
The creation of fun events in intergenerational friendships.
The importance of intergenerational friendships.
The benefits of intergenerational friendships.
The joy of intergenerational friendships.
How did the book impact society
Schools promoted children's reading.
More authors wrote stories about elders.
Children started befriending the elderly.
Service projects gained great popularity.
What is the significance of the book for the author
It earned her a name and a fortune.
It made her step out of her comfort zone.
It helped her maintain friendship with her old friends.
It enabled her to have an positive influence on others’ lives.

Parents often come across challenges in encouraging their children to eat more healthily, but a new study from Stanford researchers offers hope. The study, led by Jennifer Wang and Priya Fielding-Singh, was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. The researchers find that when teens have health-related food rules at home, they are more likely to eat healthily on their own.
To understand how teens make food decisions, Wang and Fielding-Singh surveyed l, 246 high school students from the San Francisco Bay Area. The students were asked about their eating habits and what their parents taught them about food. The findings showed that teens were generally aware of which foods were healthy and which were unhealthy --- a fact that parents often ignore.
But Wang and Fielding-Singh wanted to know more than just what teenagers thought about food. They wanted to see how teens behaved when they thought their parents weren’t watching. That’s why they conducted an experiment where students chose snacks with or without their parents’ agreement. Ten snack options were presented: five healthy and five less healthy. The results showed that teens with health-related food rules at home were more likely to pick healthy snacks, whether their parents were watching or not.
“It is important for parents to understand whether food rules --- and which ones --- can help encourage healthy eating,” Wang said. The researchers found that rules focusing on health --- such as allowing junk food only on special occasions or requiring vegetables at dinner --- were effective because they stressed the importance of considering healthiness when making food choices. On the other hand, rules unrelated to health, such as no cellphones at table, had no impact on teens’ food decisions.
“We hope these findings offer some encouragement to parents,” said Fielding-Singh. “Having clear do’s and don’ts about healthy eating at home may give kids a road map for making healthier choices when their parents are away.”
What is the main discovery of the study
Parent’s encouragement allows kids to eat healthily.
Family rules related to food are effective and helpful.
Teenagers make food choices based on parents’ agreement.
Teenagers are hardly aware of which foods are healthy or not.
What’s the purpose of the experiment about students choosing snacks
To observe students’ snack options.
To examine common sense on healthy food.
To encourage students’ healthy eating.
To check the effect of the family food rules.
Which one would be useful to improve healthy eating according to the study
A. Eat little junk food. B. Have only vegetables.
C. Dine without phones. D. Don’t talk at dinner.
What role do the family food rules play according to Fielding-Singh
Forcing kids to follow healthy eating.
Leading kids to make wise decisions themselves.
Making kids interested in healthy food.
Improving kids’ personal diets significantly.
D
A new study reports nearly a quarter of animals in rivers, lakes and other freshwater sources are in danger of dying out.
“Huge rivers like the Amazon River can appear powerful and mighty, but actually freshwater environment are very fragile and easy to get hurt,” said study co-author Patricia Charvet, a biologist. This study focuses on the often-overlooked crisis(危机) in freshwater ecosystems, which are very important for global biodiversity but frequently undervalued.
Freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, ponds and wastelands, cover less than 1% of the planet’s surface. Yet they support 10% of animal species(物种), noted the zoologist Catherine Sayer. These seemingly small habitats are active centers of life, protecting diverse species --- from delicate aquatic insets to sizable fish. Their role in supporting such a significant part of Earth’s animal life shows their ecological importance.
Researchers examined about 23, 500 species depending only on freshwater ecosystems. They found 24% of species were at risk of disappearing forever. Multiple threats ---pollution, dams, water extraction, agriculture, invasive species and climate change--- are responsible. Most species face various threats acting together, not isolated issues. This marks the first global-scale analysis of risks to freshwater species; previous studies mainly centered on land animals. Its comprehensive approach offers a vital, clear-eyed view of the challenges these species face.
“Rivers and wetlands concentrate everything that happens around them,” Charvet said. A major incident like an acid or oil spill(泄漏) can endanger an entire species, as they can go nowhere else. This shows the extreme weakness of these ecosystems. Protecting them requires urgent, united action, as their loss would cause unchangeable biodiversity damage. Each threat ---whether pollution or habitat destruction--- makes the dangerous state of freshwater species even worse, making conservation an immediate necessity.
Why does the author mention the Amazon River in the paragraph 2
A. To show its weakness despite its size. B. To compare it with other rivers.
C. To stress its enormous size and power. D. To explain how people have destroyed it.
What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 most likely mean
Single. B. Possible. C. Diverse. D. Independent.
Why did Charvet mean by saying “Rivers and wetlands concentrate everything that happens around them”
They are easy to get hurt due to pollution and surrounding activities.
They can weaken harmful things in the natural environment.
They are not in the control of human influence.
They are able to clean themselves naturally.
Which is the best title for this text
Land animals: Past and Present

A student named Maya lived in a small town. Maya was a bright student who always scored good grades in her exams. She was known for her intelligence and her teachers always appreciated her for her hard work and dedication toward her studies. Maya had a dream of becoming a doctor since she was a little girl.
As she grew up, Maya realized that becoming a doctor was not an easy task. She had to work really hard and score good grades in her high school exams to get into a good medical college.
Maya started preparing for her exams with great dedication. She spent hours studying and revising her notes. She attended all her classes regularly and took extra classes to improve her knowledge. She also started taking mock tests(模拟考试) to analyze her strengths and weaknesses.
But as time passed, Maya started facing many challenges. She found it difficult to manage her time and balance her studies with her social life. She was also under a lot of pressure to perform well in her exams. She often felt demotivated(失去动力的) and thought of giving up.
One day, Maya was sitting alone in her room feeling demotivated when her mother walked in. She could see the disappointment on Maya's face and knew that something was bothering her. Maya's mother sat beside her and asked her what was wrong. Maya told her mother about her struggles and how demotivated she was feeling.
Her mother told her a story. She said, “Once there was a farmer who had a beautiful crop of wheat. One day, a strong wind came and destroyed his entire crop. The farmer was devastated and thought of giving up farming. But he didn't lose hope. He worked harder and planted a new crop of wheat. This time he took extra care and protected his crop from the wind. The result was a beautiful harvest of wheat that he was proud of.”
Maya's mother then said, “Just like the farmer, you have to work hard and never give up. Don't let your fears and doubts hold you back. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Remember, success comes to those who work hard and never give up.”

第一节
Last Sunday, our school organized an field trip to the botanical garden, aiming to deepen students’ understanding of plant diversity and ecological conservation.
Upon arrival, a professional guide led us through various zones, introducing the characteristics and growth habits of rare plants. We took notes eagerly, asked questions actively, and even participated in a workshop on growing seedlings. The lively explanations made complex botanical knowledge easy to grasp.
This activity was truly rewarding, which greatly deepened our insight into the plant world. Not only did we gain practical botanical knowledge, but we also developed a stronger love for nature.
第二节
Maya was inspired by her mother's words. She realized that giving up was not an option and that she had to work harder and believe in herself. She started studying more diligently and managed her time better. She joined a study group and started discussing her doubts with her classmates. She also started participating in extracurricular activities to relieve stress. As the exam day approached, Maya was nervous but confident. She had prepared well and knew that she could do it.
She entered the exam hall with a positive attitude. She wrote her paper with great confidence. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Finally, the results were announced. Maya had not only scored good marks but had topped her class. She was overjoyed and couldn't believe her eyes. All her hard work and dedication had paid off. She finally realized that success is not achieved overnight and it requires hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude. Challenges and obstacles will come, but she should face them positively.
