(2024·湖南长沙)
I am a doctor and often attend important academic conferences around the world, but I'm scared to fly in an airplane. As is known to all, traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances. Especially when the plane arrives above the destination and encounters some special reasons that prevent it from landing safely, the feeling cannot be described in words. In this situation, if you see a patient with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) in trouble, are you willing to help him
Last week, I took an early flight to Paris, and it was during this flight that I experienced a lifelong and touching experience.
When it was announced on the broadcast that the plane was about to land and passengers were required to prepare, a teenage boy with Down syndrome who was traveling with his family became upset and would not return to his seat. In spite of the cabin crew's warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land, the boy completely disregarded all this and still went his own way. In terms of such a situation, the pilot was forced to circle above the airport temporarily, delaying the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.
Though the boy's parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, he was opposed to their advice resolutely. They seemed to be in despair.
Finally, the crew sought professional assistance from the passengers. Although I am a doctor, I was helpless in that situation. Subsequently, Murphy, 42—who had been a teacher for about 20 years—glanced at the boy, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.
She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly. So she also lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite books and his favorite characters.

One possible version:
He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him. A few minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand, and then together they got properly back into the airplane seats. Murphy asked for sick bags and held them as the boy threw up several times. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they'd get through it together. Thanks to her timely assistance, the boy slowly calmed down.
The plane was finally able to land safely on the ground. As expected, no one was impatient to step off the flight with parcels. Instead, calmed passengers obviously following Murphy's amazing example allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents said they couldn't thank Murphy enough for what she had done, and I let her know I had even taken notes on her expert way of having the situation handled. I said, “You must have dealt with such kind of case before, haven't you Your good deeds have made an impression on us. I want to express my deep gratitude to you.”

(2024·福建厦门)
Sophie was a poor orphan (孤儿). Nobody knew where she had come from. Yet everyone accepted the little girl, giving her food and clothes. She thanked them by doing part time jobs for them. Everybody liked her, except Gloria. She didn't allow Sophie to go into her house and didn't permit her to play with her grandson Sam, who was two years old at the time.
Every summer, the local river got flooded. That afternoon, when the water's level rose, the children had gone to school, the women were busy in the kitchen making dishes for dinner, and the men were in their offices or factories.
Suddenly, news came that the dam across the river had given way and the water had quickly entered the city. Children were then asked to rush home. The areas on the river banks were in danger of being flooded, so people living on the ground floors were shifted to places of safety. Those living in two or three storied houses climbed to the top. Police cars were trying to help. At first the water was just knee deep, but it rose fast. There was confusion everywhere.
Gloria's son had gone to another city on business. Gloria and her son's wife Ruth were on the first floor of their big house. When the water rushed into their house, Gloria and Ruth were in the kitchen. Within seconds the water rose. The police persuaded them to climb to the top floor. In a hurry they forgot Sam was sleeping in his bedroom on the first floor! The stairs were already flooded. It was impossible to get to Sam's bedroom on the first floor. Though the door to the bedroom was closed, it wasn't locked. Any moment the water could rush in. Gloria and Ruth were so worried.
At this time, the police discovered one of Sam's bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult to climb in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take a risk.

One possible version:
Out of nowhere, Sophie appeared. “Let me help. I can easily crawl in and get Sam out,” she offered without a second thought. There was no time to waste. The policemen assisted Sophie to the window: “Jump!” they told her in a determined tone. “We will drop you a rope ladder through the window.” Without a moment's hesitation, Sophie jumped through the window. Sam was sleeping soundly. Picking him up, Sophie put him on her back and tied him lightly to herself with a bed sheet. Slowly she scaled the ladder and peeped through the window.
Then, Sophie carefully handed Sam to a policeman, and climbed out of the window. Loud cheers greeted Sophie. Seeing everyone clapping for her, Sophie was stunned to a halt and did not know what the fuss was all about. It was at this point that Gloria dragged Sophie to her and hugged her tightly. Feeling immensely grateful to Sophie, Gloria learned what mattered a lot was a person's courage and humanity. Then she asked Sophie what reward she would like to have for her bravery. To her surprise, Sophie said in a low voice, “I want to have an opportunity to play with Sam.” Gloria told her that she could stay with her family as long as she wanted. On hearing this, Sophie gave a jump in the air, twirling round and round. At last she had a place to stay and play with little Sam.
