That morning, as I stood before my class, I counted (清点) the students—just as I did every day. Thirty-nine heads. Something felt off. My eyes scanned the room again. Tom was missing.
Tom was never late. I tried to recall if he had mentioned being sick the day before. Nothing. A bad feeling stuck in my heart instantly.
