What is the root cause
In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by(对...感到震惊) a news photo of a dead polar bear that(引导定从) was found on Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard. Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature(平均地表温度) Climate scientists often mention a key(关键的) climate process called the “greenhouse effect”(过去分词短语做后置定语), which(引导非限定) has two common meanings: the “natural” greenhouse effect and the “man-made” greenhouse effect.

The “natural” greenhouse effect refers to the fact that(引导同位语从句,解释说明fact的具体内容) heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface as short-wave radiation(短波辐射). The heat is released(释放) back into space at longer wave lengths(波长).

Without this process, Earth could not sustain(维系) life. However, the “man-made” greenhouse effect has now become a big problem.
