Passage 2: The Venus Flytrap
The Venus flytrap is a special plant that can catch insects. It grows in the wetlands (湿地) of North America. The plant has leaves that look like small traps. Each leaf has two parts with tiny hairs on them. When an insect touches the hairs twice, the trap closes quickly—usually in less than a second! Once the insect is trapped, the plant secretes (分泌) digestive juices (消化液) to break down the insect and get nutrients (营养). It does this because the soil in its habitat (栖息地) is poor in nutrients. After digesting the insect, the trap opens again to catch another one.

The giant tortoise (巨型陆龟) lives on some islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the largest tortoises in the world—an adult can weigh up to 200 kilograms and live for over 100 years! Giant tortoises have thick, heavy shells (壳) that protect them from enemies. They move very slowly—only about 0.3 kilometers per hour. They mainly eat grass, leaves and fruits. People use bamboo for many things: they make furniture (家具), baskets and even houses from it. In some countries, people also eat bamboo shoots (竹笋)—they are crispy and delicious.
